SEATTLE -- A pod of orcas were spotted swimming in Seattle's Elliott Bay Friday morning.

Residents in West Seattle reported seeing the orcas off Alki Beach around 9 a.m. Some riders on the West Seattle Water Taxi said they spotted the orcas a few minutes later, according to the West Seattle Blog.

Several people reported the pod headed south toward Fauntleroy ferry. SkyKING later captured video of the orcas swimming near Maury Island.

A spokesperson with the Center for Whale Research said more than 20 orcas were in the pod and identified them as "transient" and not orcas that live in the Puget Sound year-round.

Who can not feel joy and a sense of awe when we get to see these magnificent mammals? In the mid 50's my family was blessed to live on Henderson Bay, in the "country" part of Gig Harbor. There were 10-14 homes along the bluff - 50' above the bay - and we all shared a 12 party line phone system. Because we only knew them as "Killer Whales", when they showed up in the summer we all were frightened. We would all call each other and warn everyone to "stay out of the water - Killer Whales are here"! • I remember one incident when a neighbor was out in his 18 /- foot homemade, close to the water, sailboat. The "Killer Whales" arrived and surrounded his boat - we all held our collective breath and prayed they wouldn't attack him. We knew next to nothing about these mammals - not even that they were mammals. Back then we never understood just how fortunate we were. Thanks for printing this story and the photos.
