OLYMPIA, Wash.-- As lawmakers prepare to consider a measure to legalize same-sex marriage in Washington state, an Everett attorney has filed an initiative seeking to clarify the definition of marriage.

Stephen Pidgeon filed the initiative with the state secretary of state's office on the first day of the legislative session on Monday. Pidgeon previously worked with groups who unsuccessfully tried to overturn the state's domestic partnership law in 2009.

The initiative seeks to change the current state statute, which says that marriage is a civil contract between a male and a female. Pidgeon wants it to be changed to "between one man and one woman."

He said the clarification is necessary because he is concerned legalizing same sex marriage would lead to the legalization of polygamy and other forms of relationships.

Ok, you're opposed to justice and equality and don't buy into the American ideal of equal human worth in the eyes of the law. You'd much rather have a Christian Taliban running America. We get it.

Marriage equality has been the law of the land in Massachusetts for 7 1/2 years. I assure you the fabric of society has not unraveled. If anything, it has grown stronger. Committed same-sex couples are raising happy, healthy families and enjoying the same protections and benefits as other married couples under Massachusetts law. However, because of DOMA, they're missing out on about 1,138 other protections and benefits. There's a difference between marriage and civil unions in terms of legal protections and benefits. Marriage offers many more. The argument about polygamy is ridiculous. Committed married couples are simply that...couples. Wishing Washington State well in its quest for marriage equality. It's the enlightened thing to do. You'll like the results. We have.

@ firesoul: No one will force your church to marry same-sex couples if church policy stands against it. I will stand next to you fight tooth an nail for your church to have it's rules respected. The problem is, your church is not every church. Some churches are more than willing to marry same-sex couples. The act of banning, or disallowing same-sex marriage leaves those folk out in the cold. Sure there are civil unions, but they are hardly marriages. My heterosexual marriage grants me rights my same-sex friend couples can never dream of having and that is not okay. Separate but equal, never is. You may find homosexuality is amoral, I highly suggest you think otherwise but you are your own person. Hate is easy, love takes courage.

@ denkoko: I highly suggest you look up John Shore. He has a good standpoint on homosexuality and the Christian Bible. He is my favorite Christian and he, has the best chance out of any to convert me, unlikely but a chance. While you have a right to believe what your faith may or may not believe is true, marriage is not and has never been exclusively a Christian function. I got married, and I am a Witch, my husband a Norse Pagan. No Christianity was involved in our marriage. The bigotry comes when you think the law needs to follow your specific religions rules on marriage. If a same-sex marriage should be illegal by your Faith Book, so should mine, the heterosexual marriage of a witch and a pagan. @ NightDream: homosexuality was removed from the DSM, the diagnostic manual for mental illness used by American doctors, and psychiatrists, it is the go to book on all things ab. psych. Homosexuality, as it is today, same-sex love, is not self destructive or harmful.

I do not believe a person is a biggot for stating what is WRITTEN in the Bible. It says,"A man should NOT lay with another man as he would a woman. It is an Abomination befor GOD" !!! If they want to have a civil contract, and it is legal, fine. BUT. If you are a Christian, would you go against the teachings of the Bible ??? To me, THAT is Biggoted.

I am opposed to gay marriage because I believe it will contribute to the decay of our society and it is an attempt to condone abnormal and self-destructive behavior. I am for letting people cohabitate with who they want, but against a seal of approval from the state. When I talk about the decay of society, that includes the behavior of many heterosexuals. Children deserve to have a mother and a father in a stable home. Too many children don't even know who their fathers are due to their parents' irresponsible behavior and lack of self-control. They are being taught a philosophy of, "If it feels good, do it."

There was a time in this country when hating blacks, calling them lesser humans and pushing for less rights for them was considered normal. Now if someone did that, they are considered crazy, bigoted and probably from Texas. It will only be a matter of time before people like Stephen Pidgeon are considered just a crazy as racists.

@firesoul Seperation of Church and State goes both ways: protect the church from the state and protect the state from the church. That's why we don't have a state/official religion. If we did, that would infringe upon freedom of religion.

@abbey1599 - I think you said it best. "I think we should change all marriages to civil unions, because that's what they are - a civil contract. Allowing consenting adults to of either sex to enter a civil union, and if people want a marriage certificate then they should be issued by the church." How perfect! Two seperate forms. You really want to be married in the eyes of God? Fine. Here's your marriage certificate provided for you by the church. You want to be married in the eyes of your state and your country because of all the legal reasons to do so? Fine, here's your civil contract. You want both? Fine. File for both. If a church decides they have no problem wedding gay couples, fine. They can. Let the individual church factions squabble about who can and can't get married. Let the state collect taxes and fees from their civil contracts. And then let us hear no more about this. If you think it's morally wrong for like and like to marry - THEN DON'T DO IT. That simple.

Firesoul, It isn’t a matter of more or less of one view point or another. It’s a matter of fairness. You seem to brush that concept aside. You don’t care if your view point is discriminate or not. Luckily, those that crafted the Constitution and the Bill of Rights encompassed everyone that is born in this nation. Maybe not as an intension, but the words are pretty simple. What others might consider as a pursuit of happiness, you might think is immoral, but so what, that is what makes this country what it is. As long as it does not infringe on your rights, which it does not. Not illegal, which it is no longer. Then people should have the right to be happy. Who are you, to say?I think you should leave the judging to God. The ruling does not affect you one bit. The gays are already here, what do you think, once this ruling happen, gays are going to descend upon you and your neighborhood? You still will be able to go to Church, get married and eat ice cream just like before. Its just paper

I respect homosexuals and know a few myself. However, I don't like the implication of normalcy that comes with allowing two same gender adults to become married. I don't think homosexuality is right, moral, acceptable, or however else you want to term it. Yes, I have this viewpoint due to my religious values. And yes, our founding fathers had religious values that they, too, took into consideration when forming our legal system. "Separation of church and state" was originally intended to protect the church FROM the state, not the other way around. Liberal people don't have to like it, but that is the truth. Don't take something sacred like marriage and throw it in the face of those of us who still believe in the intended definition of marriage: one man and one woman. There are more of us than you think.

This "lawyer" did not raise his head up when people leave their pets listed in a will does he? We are not asking to marry animals, have more than one spouse, -Referendum 71 won because it was the RIGHT thing to do. Having said that, those who did not like Ref 71 lost and ducked their heads and ran. Marriage equality is important. We have the right to be married to our partners. We pay higher taxes than hetros, we pay higher dollars for less. That is not right or fair. So, mr.lawyer, maybe try and change the injustice of those who are being robed by Washington state-,and force the state to pay money to those whom their rights of marriage have been ignored. Now that is productive

I see some bigots are out in force. I once had an anti same sex marriage person say to me 'that is so mean, I am not a bigot, it is just against my religion' and i said 'honey, the same argument was made for mixed race marriages.. you are, indeed, a bigot'... if you are happy being known as a bigot please, please keep fighting equality for all. And everyone will know what a bigot you really are.

Dear astrogazer, Reality check just because your gay will not make you a baby thief, and if you check the stats there are numerous children out there waiting for adoption who were removed mostly from hetrosexual homes( and yes this is true) So i don't think the gays will be out baby napping ever being gay dosen't make you a criminal. I think we should change all marriages to civil union, because that's what they are a civil contract. Allowing consenting adults to of either sex to enter a civil union, and if people want a marriage certificate then they should be issued by the church- Please keep the church out of government, and for all you who think seperation of church and state is not truly what our founding father's intended then I suggest you study history a bit closer.

How about we change the definition to "marriage is a civil contract between two consenting adults." And for all of you who think this will lead to "marriage" between people and animals, get out from under your rock. Seriously the most ridiculous argument to be made.... I think they are afraid because they all secretly want to marry animals....

Does anyone notice that it’s only Republicans and the Religious extremists that worry about marrying animals? I have not once heard about any gay person wanting to marry their pet dog. A matter of fact, the only people I have really heard talking about polygamy are these two groups and the Mormons. Maybe the reason we are hearing them talk about this is because they really do want to marry their horse and dogs. I am begging to think that I need to keep an eye out for my cat and sheep when these groups come around. Personally I think we need to keep all these groups out of our bed rooms and our relationships.

yes, as soon as gay marriage is legalized, then so too will polygamy be legalized. I think the problem most people have with polygamy and gay marriage is the unknown... like, what would happen if Ted Turner and Rupert Murdock and or Paul Allen got married? that's alot of money, and there aren't laws around to take care of that kind of merger. I used to be a polygamist (polyandry) and i miss the lifestyle alot. For anyone curious about polygamy, all I gotta say is that, "and extra income, is an extra income, and an extra mouth to feed is an extra mouth to feed"

@astrogazer, way to listen to the crazies. An animal can't give consent to be married. Why is it okay for you to tell two consenting adults that they can't show their love through marriage just because they're the same gender? Would you like someone to come up to you, as an adult, and tell you, "Hey, you know what, I don't think people with your (gf/bf)'s hair color should get married, so I'm going to make it illegal for you to be married! You know that Gingers have no soul!" (as an example). People can't change who they've fallen in love with. They shouldn't be penalized because they're the same gender. I couldn't care less what two people are doing in their bedrooms. I'm not there with them, it doesn't affect me.

So, what next, marriage with animals? Is there no end to human depravity? 50 years from now when the population is a lot less, baby theft will be a big thing due to no man and woman marriages producing a baby for the same sexers to adopt.

People can believe what they want about marriage and same sex couples, but we don't need their views forced upon us with legislation. If you don't believe in same sex marriage, then don't have a same sex marriage yourself. Simple enough.
