BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- Pierce County fire officials say it's a miracle no one was critically injured after a car plowed into a home near Bonney Lake early Friday.
The collision happened around 1:40 a.m. in the 12200 block of 214th Avenue East. A mother and her two children were sleeping inside the home when a speeding car ran off the road, smashed through a fence and drove into the house. The car crashed directly into Amber O'Brien's bedroom.
"I was asleep. I woke up on the other side of the room on the floor. (There was) a really loud noise," said O'Brien.
The car ended up embedded inside the house. O'Brien said the car's side mirror ended up on the pillow right where her head was.
"(The driver) got out of the car. I couldn't open the door because the mattress was in the way, and I made him help me move the mattress so I could get out of my room into my daughter's room. And she was fine," she said.
O'Brien was transported to the hospital where she was treated for scratches on her arm, bruises and some torn ligaments. Her two children were reportedly ok. O'Brien said her son was on other side of the house and slept through it all.
O'Brien said the driver was "drunk as a skunk" and "staggering" when he crashed into her house.
"He didn't get mad when I yelled at him," said O'Brien.
The sheriff's office said the driver, a 32-year-old man, fled the scene on foot. He was arrested a short time later at his home, which was a few blocks away from the scene.
He was taken to a hospital for blood testing for alcohol. He is being held in the Pierce County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault and failure to return to the scene of an injury accident.
Meanwhile, O'Brien has since returned home. She and the property owner were cleaning up the mess and assessing the damage.
