SEATTLE – A Belfair, Wash. Man was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly possession more than 1 million images of child pornography.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office said the arrest of the 67-year-old man was the culmination of a two-year investigation by the sheriff’s office, Washington State Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security.

Police first started investigating the man in April of 2009 when a family member contacted police and gave detectives some of the man’s images.

Investigators do not think the images involved any children from the area as they believe the man had purchased most of the pictures online.

“We have no reason to believe he was selling them,” said Mason County Chief Deputy Dean Byrd, “He appears to be a collector.”

Chief Deputy Byrd said the case could lead to more arrests. Byrd said federal investigators are trying to determine who took and sold the pictures.

“If we can identify from evidence the IP address, then this could just be the tip of the iceberg,” said Byrd.

KING 5 News is not identifying the man until he is formally charged by the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office.
