OLYMPIA, Wash. -  The state Fish and Wildlife Department has closed all fishing at Capitol Lake in Olympia to prevent the spread of New Zealand mudsnails, an invasive species.

The Olympian reports the tiny snails can be transported on shoes, a dog's paw and fishing gear.

The snails showed up in the lake last November and so far they haven't spread, but fisherman are asked to scrub down their boots and gear after every fishing trip to avoid picking up unwanted pests.

blow torch will get rid of the ones on shore in no time. I wrote to them last winter and asked why they didn't blow torch the ones on shore when they drained the lake to freeze them out --- they said the freezing was going to get rid of them and didn't think it was cost effective to go through and blow torch them too.

Drain Capital Lake and maybe all the snails will be flushed out to sea along with all the vermon that lives off the state.
