TACOMA, Wash. - Thousands of law enforcement officers and members of the public gathered on Tuesday to remember Pierce County sheriff's Deputy Kent Mundell.

The somber journey to honor a fallen deputy ended at the Tacoma Dome, where thousands of officers, firefighters and everyday citizen came to celebrate Kent Mundell's life.

"Kent was not only my son, but my joy.  I'm so proud to be his mom," said Mundell's mother, Patricia Stafford, who told stories of a fearless child.

"I actually found him on top of the refrigerator one day.  He had to climb the shelves, the counter and up the side of the fridge," she said.
Later in life he gave up a stable job to be a deputy.

"He told me that someday he might give his life.  Other people would view him as a hero.  Mom, I'm not.  I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," said Stafford.

Kent Mundell was a jet skier, a skydiver, a boater and a risk taker always looking for an adventure.

"Kent never had a problem saying I love you man, he'd type it on the empty seat, he'd let you know after you left a call and you could say I love you back and it was never weird," said Deputy Jim Jones.

But his greatest love was his high school sweetheart and two children, who, in a poignant moment with Sgt. Nick Hausner added their dad's name to the list of fallen pierce county deputies.

But for the men and women in blue, it only strengthened their resolve.

"We will not hesitate to do our jobs," said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor. "Look at these people, and when you look at them remember, this is the oath we take.  This is the best of who and what we are.  This is what Kent Mundell stood for."

A long procession of police and emergency vehicles accompanied Mundell's casket from Puyallup to the dome for Tuesday's service. Hundreds of police cars were involved in the roughly 10-mile procession route, along with thousands of people from the community.

Mundell was the sixth law enforcement officer killed in an ambush in two months in Pierce County and Seattle.

"This has been a miserable two months, no doubt about it," said Steve Mauer, Lakewood Police Dept. "I'd rather not live through this again. It's important for me to help out as much as I can to honor the officers who have gone like this. That's why I'm here."

"It's just a show of confidence in our sheriff, show of confidence and support for the sheriff's department," said Kenyon Luce, volunteer.

Mundell and another deputy, Sgt. Nick Hausner, were shot by David Crable after family members had called officers to remove Crable from the home. Hausner survived his wounds, but Mundell was taken off life support at a Seattle hospital on Dec. 27.

I totally agree that military service members should be given far more than they are getting. After giving their lives in service to our country, they are often so soon forgotten. Soldiers follow the orders of the president even when motives are questionable... Nobody wants to talk about the reasons why the police in Washington are being killed. Abuse of power in the criminal justice system is a serious issue. Unfortunately, cops are the target of rage against the establishment. In Washington the criminal justice system is corrupt beyond belief. Lot of people are not very trusting of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Listen, there have been a great deal of murders and other violent crimes in Washington and there were 5 or 6 witnesses that saw the whole thing. Nobody will come forward and tell who committed the crime. Not because they are afraid of the guilty. They don't trust law enforcement, and for good reason. No good deed goes unpunished.

It is a terrible tragedy. I offer my prayers and support to the families of the fallen officers. But, what I think some are trying to say is where is this outpouring of love & support from our communities when we lose a local military service member? Where is the media coverage? I am truly sorry for the loss of our law enforcement officers, and for their families. I just wish the Military would get the same respect from our communities. My son is currently in Afghanistan. I pray every day that he comes home safe. He has lost some close friends right before his eyes over there, and is serving his country bravely. I also have another son and my husband in the Military. They are all very proud to serve this great nation. And, I am very proud of them. God bless all of our troops, and law enforcement personnel. But, I pray that we could all rally around the next Military family that needs us the way we have done so for the law enforcement officers.

I certainly didn't say anything remotely close to the memorial going on too long. I simply stated that all of the activities leading up to and following the actual ceremony are part of the memorial proccess, and much of it is not free. No where did I say that the cops are not worthy of the cost to taxpayers. I simply stated that the taxpayer does actually incur a large cost in the proccess. It is just like having the Thunderbirds come to your airshow. Sure there are local sponsors, but they don't pay for the thousands of hours of practice leading up to the show.

DAKOTANATIVE- You say the memorial goes on too long? Well you should be aware that the pain never ends for those who have lost a father or mother sister or brother or uncle, you get the idea,to one of these losers!

DAKOTANATIVE and you arent much better with your lambasting. Yes these items arent free, but neither was the cost of life and the loss to the many families who lost family members because of domestic disputes or people who should have never been let out of jail! You might want to apologize to every group you have offended here!

Justcommenting you should rethink what you sound like since you did not think before you blurted your weak mind. There are people hurting deeply right now and you should have paid more attention to the news and media coverage. You should have thought about how many citizens are backing the officers who put themselves in dangers way every day to ones who are to dense to use their brains for what God intended! Obviously, no forethought here either. And one day maybe you will need the police and they wont get there in time for you!

Actually, alot of taxpayer money is used for the memorials. Two thousand emergency responder vehicles sitting in traffic for 3 hours aren't burning free fuel. The workers in the vehicles are not all working for free. Responders having to drive down to cover for the officers at the memorial are not all working for free. Thousands of hours of overtime were involved. The many escorted trips to the airport, coroner's office, morgue, and everywhere else are not free. All of the trips to harbor View in company cars required fuel and man-hours. The loss to all the businesses along the parade route are not even measurable. I am not saying that any of that is wrong, just that saying no tax money is spent is a flat out lie. The memorial starts when the officer falls and continues until the last flower is picked up.

Just commenting get out of the armed services and stop embarrassing the rest of us who serve! MAN UP!!!! STOP whining and moaning on all the message boards about what a victim you are! There are kids for gods sake who don't have a daddy anymore and don't need to be reading about some grown man feeling sorry for himself.

I agree with homerj - justcommenting should go way far away. What a jerk to make those kind of comments. Go "just" comment over in Afganastan! Bless those who are just trying to protect innocent people, and especially bless those who lose their lives in doing so!

I hope than none of deputy Mundell's family reads your comments. What a disespectful act on your part.

I'm a former police officer and a former military service member. The reason that fallen police and fire fighters get parades is because they are civil officers that are appointed to protect the community from violence and injustice, not be killed by violence and injustice. Military service members enter service with the full knowledge that their life may be required in service to their country. When wars are fought, it is anticipated that lives will be lost and yet governments send troops into battle... Police work and fire fighting is dangerous, however Police and Fire should not be killed needlessly due to certain members of society that have lost faith in the system. In Washington there is a clear failure in government. This usually happens in third world countries. So what does this say about Washington?

I thought KING5.com might have banned "justcommenting" due to the dis-respectful, insensitive and of course ill-informed comments that were made last time. Too bad. People please ignore his comments, I think this person just makes them and sits back to read the responses, kind of a self gratification issue. And if family and friends of any of the fallen officers have read any of this person's comments, I would apologize for him. Knowing that he is clearly not capable of empathy or sympathy for the fallen officers, that despite his dis-respect, would have undoubtedly been there to help him if the call came.

Just Commenting... What's to say. You are just a very sad pathetic person. I hope that one day you need help. Part of me hopes you don't get it, because you are no worthy of the effort. But even as pathetic as you are, there are thousands of police officers, deputy sheriff's, troopers and the like who will put themselves in harms way to protect a undeserving POS such as yourself.

Went to the procession and watched most of the memorial on TV. Seems like Deputy Mundell lived life to the fullest, not all of us can say that. It may be over for us, but the family and friends now have to start a new chapter in their life without Deputy Mundell. Thank you to all in uniform who put their lives in harms way to protect the rest of us.
