TACOMA, Wash. – A man who allegedly approached officers with a knife was shot and killed Friday afternoon by Tacoma police officers. But at least one witness says there was no knife.

It happened around 3 p.m. at a bus stop in the 6100 block of Sixth Avenue, a couple blocks from Tacoma Community College.

Tacoma police say the suspect went into a Dollar Tree store and bought a knife. He then went across the street to a bus stop where he allegedly began waving the knife around. People felt threatened and called 911.

Chief Don Ramsdell says when officers arrived, the suspect held the knife in his fist and approached the officers.

"When they encountered the subject, the motion that he gave was above his head and toward the officers," said Ramsdell.

Raphael Dellafuente says he saw the confrontation, but didn't see a knife.

"One of the officers starts screaming 'knife, knife' and then shot him four times," said Dellafuente. "There was no knife involved."

A tweet posted on the Twitter page of Washington Huskies basketball player Isaiah Thomas indicates he saw the shooting.

"Me and @DomWill253 jus seen the cops shoot a homeless dude on 6th ave 4 times," reads the tweet.

The suspect's identity has not been released, but police say he is a 50-year-old homeless man.

Both officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard when an officer fires a weapon.

Four deadly confrontations

It's the fourth time this week someone has died in a confrontation with police in the Puget Sound area.

On Monday, 50-year-old John T. Williams was shot by a Seattle police officer. Williams was known for carving wood and was carrying his knife when he was shot. The officer claims Williams refused to drop the 3-inch blade as he approached the officer, but some witnesses dispute that account.

The next day, King Ramses Hoover stopped breathing and died after being tased by Pierce County Sheriff's deputies. Investigators say Hoover was unruly.

Later that day, Federal Way Police shot David Young in the head. They say the 23-year-old was driving a stolen truck and led them on a chase.

Then, Friday afternoon, Tacoma Police killed a homeless man.

And Friday evening, officers shot a West Seattle man in a confrontation.

All these cases remain under investigation.

Killer cops killing people to protect themselves is the opposite of their excuse for existence in our communities. They promise to be protecting the people, but they are protecting themselves by killing the people. That is not why they are allowed to exist. We do not need to pay taxes to hire a gang of gun thugs to kill us for their own protection. ... There is something VERY WRONG with those who say that killing the people to protect the gun thugs is "justified." We are not so dumb that we cannot see what they are doing. If they cannot or will not protect the people instead of killing the people then we do not want them in our communities.

Any man who fires upon another unarmed man is a coward, regardless of their occupation. Change the culture, where's the shame? Are the fellow officers with conscience so insecure in their dept's social environment that they can't say it how it is? Boundary conditions, folks; set them. Response to a wielded knife should be by taser, response to a threatening unarmed man should be by baton, response to another gun should be by gun. Change the rules. Fairly punish anyone who breaks them. Responding to a suicide call? Use a different set of criteria than above. There is no point in preventing a suicide with murder. If we don't make these simple changes, the solution-less downward spiral that we face ahead will lead us into a citizen-police dynamic that won't reverse. Media, you're losing public trust. Police, you're losing trust and public order. People, you're losing your ability to channel emotion into functional conversation. Words aren't having intended effect? Chang'em. copy?

yessir: if you cant see 84k base pay with overtime adding up to close to 100k then you must be really bad at math. Overtime is time and a half for police, that that's over $60 an hour, 4 hours a week (a realistic figure) of overtime is over $240, times 46 weeks (cant work much more than that with 36 paid days off) a year is $11,040, add that to $84,209 and you've got $95,245 .Do I actually have to spell this out for you? Would you like $1 to go to the dollar store and buy a calculator? Or is it that $95k isn't close enough to $100k to make my point that cops are very well paid? And I am not even counting traffic control side jobs on their days off. I only know about those because I'm a construction worker, and I learned about it from the police I work with! I really am done talking to you troll.

Its getting easy to get even more time off with pay. Ivestigating we have the police who we all know take care of thier own. Thats like letting my son correct his own test. Cant lose. This killing over a knife is getting out of hand. What ever happend to equal force! But I do remember that 7 Tacoma cops shot a black man with a knife and a stick. They shoot to kill so you cant file a law suite. They wear vest that I don't think the knife will go into. They are becoming the KGB

washingtonapple... folks like you always cite the most dangerous jobs claim, completely ignoring the fact that unlike occupations like commercial fishing and the timber industry (who both routinely and blatantly cut safety corners to make $PROFIT$), police department go to great extents to try and make conditions safer for their officers. Despite a continuous focus on officer safety police work remains a very deadly profession... with no corners cut to make money. It's also amusing that once confronted on the issue of pay, you immediately start side stepping and coming up with $60,000 and finally $84,000 (significantly below your initial claims of $100,000). Then you start stammering about overtime and traffic control? Dude... get a life.

I can understand police needing to use force to stop someone resisting. HOWEVER do they have to shoot to kill? Are they that bad of an aim that they can't take the person down without killing them? What if the person is mentally ill or even if it is death by cop, deadly force for someone with a knife is just crazy and unecessary! I don't support such actions and I hope their is something done to stop this. Next we will be shot if we are speeding or talking on our cell phones in the car.....who knows when you have police so willing to KILL!

clear2copy: I will admit I don't know what a Tacoma police officer makes exactly. But I can tell you what a Seattle cop makes and I'll assume Tacoma is somewhere in the neighborhood or everyone would transfer to Seattle. Entry level sworn officers make $64,310.40 per year base pay which includes up to 36 paid days off per year even if they don't shoot shoot someone. That figure steadily goes up, until at 54 months they make $84,209.04 base pay. These numbers do not account for overtime or side work like traffic control on construction jobs which can easily put it in the $100k area. Look it up on the Seattle city website, its all public information.

I always get a kick out of how people always say that police are out there putting their lives on the line for us. Many cops make near $100k a year doing what they do, and like most of us they do what they do for that paycheck. Police aren't even in the top 10 most dangerous occupations according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The top 10 for most dangerous from most to least are Fishers, Timber Cutters, Airplane Pilots, Structural Metal Workers, Taxi Drivers, Construction Workers, Roofers, Electric Power Installers, Truck Drivers, and Farmers. Police sit at #11. The difference between police and the top 10 are that most make a lot less money, and don't kill anyone when they feel slightly threatened. So the next time you open a can of tuna don't forget to thank the fisherman who put his life on the line to bring it to you. He took over 6 times the risk and he didn't even have to shoot anyone to do it.

The 911 calls were because their was an idiot with a knife. Do you really think they called 911 so they could see a shooting? And the college student that "twittered" his comment should probably be kept back a couple of years!

First off, I know little about this case (just the news story... which isn't much), so I'm not here to pass judgement. This idea of teaching officers to shoot to "wing" only works in Hollywood movies (no offense... I love JP). In reality it more likely gets the officer killed. Most people who wing people in real life didn't do so because they were good shots... but rather bad shots. To this end, cops will just need to take more chances and pay the price when those chances don't work out... but maybe that's the message some folks are saying... more cops are just going to have to die so we can be more politically correct. I remember a woman asking me one time why we don't just have two guys on the fire engine.. I replied "With crew sizes that small it's too dangerous... we lose firefighters from that", she replied "But it's part of your job to die".... back then I was shocked at her statement... but now? Cuts in staffing... having to take more and more chances... Give the lady a cigar

If the police had not shown up then you anti-plice bigots would be criticizing them for that too. As I've said to you fools before, the police are screwed no matter what they do. So they should just continue to protect themselves and innocent civilians. If police want to be respected they need to find other ways to subdue a supposedly dangerous person other than simply killing a citizen a day. Otherwise there will probably be more crazies like Christopher Monfort coming out of the woodwork.

To help you out, mgoldstein...it is always "shoot to stop". This is not just Police protocol, but basic self-defense gun protocol. The only shot that could be argued as a "kill-shot" is a shot to the head. Proper gun protocol is to aim for largest body mass area, which is the main torso area. Shooting for the legs is not acceptable as there is too high of a risk of missing and having the bullet bounce around elsewhere. The shot to the torso is NOT a kill-shot, it is meant to put the person down...thus stopping them. The fact that that person might die is merely coincidence. If you were defending your home, you would want to shoot for largest body mass area to diffuse the situation ASAP.

I'm sure police protocol in firing a weapon is to stop the suspect completely. What about a shot or SHOTS to the leg to stop perp instead of to the head or torso. Again, I don't know much about the protocol and I'm on the side of the good guys....so help me out here.....is it shoot to kill or shoot to stop?

What happened in Lakewood has knowthing to do with the current cuture of police officers, and it is a known fact that as part of the accademy training they teach how to lie and trump up police reports to give to prosicuters. I think if you start patrolling with a partner the decisions to use deadly force may drop off, a lone officer is always going to feel more vulnerable and that can lead to impaired reasoning. Something has to change.

What is with the cops? I know they recently lost fellow officers, but it seems to have made our police trigger happy, the cops need to get a grip and look hard at these decisions to use deadly force.

You people that think shooting someone in the leg or arm will disable them need to stop watching TV and get out in the real world. First off an arm or leg is a small moving target. Very hard to hit. If the cops tried to do that all the time, there would be misses and inocent bystandard would be hit. Then you would crying foul about that. Besides, shooting someone in the arm or leg will not necessarily disable someone. There are plenty of real life DOCUMENTED instances of this. Taser is not a good option for a lethal force situation...and yes a person with a knife is a lethal force situation. A 3 inch blade can kill you. Taser applications don't always work. Come on people...pull your heads out of Hollywood's rear and wake up.

Why do people think it is a better idea to shoot a moving target in the leg or the arm to disarm them! Have you ever tried to shoot at a moving target under stress? My guess is not. The man had a weapon and came at the officers. They will shoot at center mass because this will stop him AND it is a larger target to hit. Less likely to miss and risk hitting someone else. You people that think the officer should shoot at the persons leg or arm would be crying foul if the officer missed and hit an innocent person. Then you would be asking why the officer didn't shoot the person in the chest. Unless you have had someone come at you with a knife, then you people who are against the officers have no idea what you are talking. It is easy to stand on the sidelines and judge!!!!

I think, there being multiple trained gunman (police) and one homeless man with a knife that they could just shoot him in the leg. I have no problems with them shooting him to get him down and under control. But you're telling me that 5-6 police were so frightened of an old man with a dollar store knife that they had to shoot him MULTIPLE times to kill him and ease their nerves??? I don't think so. Shoot his leg so he drops to the ground. Shoot his arm or shoulder so he drops the knife. If this is something that they truly find to be the answer to situations such as this, than civilians should have the right to take someone down who is threatening them as well. But if that was a civilian who shot a man because he had a knife across the street from you, you'd be charged. All I am saying is practice what you preach. The police had the advantage. I don't think that the old man could take one officer down with a knife, let alone 6. Should they be punished? Nah, but someone smack em.

To all you pathetic police bashers, it is real simple, dont go waving around a knife and you wont get shot. Citizens have the right to be safe. Whether he was mentally ill or homeless, it does not make the knife any less dangerous. All you panzies do is criticize the police but of course you have no solution of your own. Criticizing is easy. I suppose if the guy came at you with a knife you would just lay down on the ground and try to understand why the man has a knife. Typical tree hugging thinking!

It saddens me that we cannot find a non-violent way in which to solve these problems. I refuse to believe that four police officers cannot subdue someone is a danger to themselves and others. Ending a life should be the last resort. I am not one of those liberals who believes that our police officers should put themselves at risk at all costs, but the job requires that they do use risk. It does not take four shots in the chest. It simply does not. A taser can be shot from a distance and very likely would have caused this man to drop the knife so that one of the officers could take him into custody where he belongs. Instead he lies in the morgue and our officers lose the trust of some of the public. Incidents like this hurt more than those lying on the pavement.

One, UNNECESSARY killed by cop a day! Not ONE of these people were actually a threat! Not one! In each and EVERY incident, the cops overreacted. What kind of training is it they are getting ? Gregoire practically made it a statewide day of mourning when three off duty police personnel died in a fire at their home. Does she have any feeling for the rest of the community?

What stopped him from emptying the gun and reloading? I mean, for crying out loud, homeless people aren't for target practice. If Governor Gregoire doesn't want a full scale revolt on her hands she had best make some public acknowledgement that this type of police activity is NOT going to be allowed in Washington state. We have courts, we have jails. We do NOT NEED VIGILANTE COPS. If they are so afraid of the citizens of Wa. State, then they had better all move to California! Enough is Enough.

The power that LEO's have has totally gone to their heads and a human life means nothing to them. I seriously think they see us like they see targets on the shooting range. I just plain do not see any resolution to these incidents - I mean who can stop it. We are all in jeopardy in any sort of confrontation with police anymore. Sad situation.

The news tribune has a quote from the chief of police who said the man refused to drop the knife and "Raised it above his head, and officers fired" that is not advancing on officers. I have tried for years to show people that saying that the suspect advanced on officers is a standard police PR line. The press knows this and is involved very closely with the police. It is used in cases when the suspect actually does advance on officers and even when they do not. How can anyone who reads newspapers etc for years on end, not see this line over and over? I do think that from what witnesses are saying, that this man was a danger, but it remains to be known how far the officers were when they shot, again, the police chief of Tacoma is saying that he did not advance on officers. Justified shoot? Maybe. Officers cowards with no skill to talk a man back from the edge? Maybe

You people who clap for the cops killing everyone that scares em... do you forget that we have a justice system that is set up to specifically deal with criminals? Apprehend the perpetrator, try them in a court of law, and then impose sentence. Thats our way - cops are either scared because they forgot their academy training or are just looking for a few paid days off, shooting anyone they think they can get away with. Condoning "murder by cop" is as unamerican as it gets.

majordysfunkshun- The reason the police shoot for the chest/center mass is because that is the easiest/biggest place to hit. During a high stress situation (like someone coming at you with a knife) it's not as easy as just "shooting for an arm/legg." And these people didn't have to die. They made their own choice to roll the dice with police...and lost.

Do officers know how to shoot in non-lethal ways? A leg, and the person isn't walking. An arm, and the person is not throwing/stabbing. A torso, four times, and the person dies. I understand the laws, and that police commands are to be heeded, but why lethal force when faced with a knife? I simply cannot understand why these people needed to die.
