Authorities say a man who was fatally shot by police in Port Orchard, Washington, was armed with a knife.

The Kitsap County sheriff's office said Friday that officers were attempting to arrest 36-year-old Thomas D. Rogers on felony arrest warrants when he was shot by police behind South Park Plaza strip mall Thursday night.

Rogers was being sought by authorities in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, on an outstanding warrant for child molestation. He was also wanted for a probation violation in Kitsap County.

The officers approached Rogers, who was armed with a knife, and an altercation followed. Two officers from the Port Orchard Police Department were injured; one suffered cuts, the other injured an ankle.

During the confrontation with the suspect, police said officers deployed a Taser, which had no effect on Rogers. While the investigation is in its early stages, it is believed that two officers fired their weapons, said police.

Medical personnel with South Kitsap Fire and Rescue pronounced Rogers deceased.

The Kitsap County Coroner's Officer is conducting an autopsy to determine cause of death.

Anyone with information related to this case are encouraged to call Kitsap County Sheriff's Detective Gerry Swayze at 360-337-4479.
