EATONVILLE, Wash. - Two Pierce County sheriff's deputies thought a man was ready to leave a home peacefully before he emerged with a gun and opened fire, sending both deputies to the hospital. One of them is now on life support and the suspect is dead.

Deputy Kent Mundell is in ICU at Harborview Medical Center. Sgt. Nick Hausner is in stable condition at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said the deputies were shot at around 8:45 p.m. Monday while responding to a dispute between David Crable and his brother near Eatonville, a rural community in the Cascade foothills.

Crable's brother said Crable was intoxicated and wouldn't leave. The deputies thought they had calmed Crable and he agreed to go. He had gone into a bedroom to get his things.

"When he came out of the bedroom, he had a gun hidden and he opened fire on everybody in the residence, firing multiple rounds, striking both of our deputies," said Troyer during a morning press conference. Later, Troyer said that Crable had the weapons under his shirt.

"We believe he fired 10 rounds and he didn't need to do it. He wasn't going to jail. He wasn't under under arrest. They were actually going to give him a ride out of there and give him a helping hand to defuse the situation," said Troyer. "This particular person went ahead and flat tried to execute both of our deputies."

Both deputies were hit multiple times. Mundell fired back, striking and killing Crable.

Crable's brother and daughter pulled Hausner out of harm's way.

"And that's greatly appreciated. That's greatly respected. That shows tremendous heart," said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor.

Hausner, 43, is a 20-year veteran with the department. He is married with a 14-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son.

Mundell, 44, is an 8-year veteran. He is married with a 16-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son.

"Everybody that responded knew these guys and had been on calls with them for years. The fire department guys are probably taking this really hard too, because they were right there when this happened," said Troyer.

Gov. Chris Gregoire issued a statement saying, "My thoughts and prayers are with the two wounded Pierce County deputies, their families, friends, and the entire law enforcement community."

Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Crable had a history of protection orders sought by family members.

Earlier this year, Crable pleaded guilty to malicious mischief and brandishing a knife in an incident involving his brother, Lindquist said, and protection orders were imposed afterward, telling him to stay away from his brother and a female minor.

Both counts were misdemeanors. Lindquist said Crable had no felony convictions.

At the time of the Monday night shooting, those particular protection orders were no longer in effect, Lindquist said.

The prosecutor said other protection orders that emerged were not the result of charges filed.

"They are a result of people saying this guy is a danger to me," said Lindquist, adding, "I think you can reasonably infer from his history, he had an alcohol problem."

The shooting is the third in three months in which authorities say a gunman has taken aim at law enforcement officials in Washington state.

On Nov. 29, Lakewood police officers were shot and killed at a coffee shop before their shift. After a two-day manhunt, suspect Maurice Clemmons was shot to death by a Seattle police officer. On Oct 31, Seattle Officer Timothy Brenton was killed as he sat in his patrol car Halloween night. Christopher Monfort pleaded not guilty to aggravated first-degree murder in Brenton's death, as well as three charges of attempted first-degree murder and arson.

"This should underline and make clear the fact that people who wear badges risk things," said Pastor. "They risk themselves for perfect strangers. We need to ask ourselves how we support people like that, how we back them, if they are going to stand in our stead, how we help them protect us. And I would like to see the community engage in those questions and that dialog so that we don't meet under these circumstances with you (the media) covering something horrible happening to law enforcement officers.

Troyer said the department won't change its procedure on responding to domestic violence calls.

"When somebody asks for help, we go," said Troyer.

"Fear is not going to be in charge. We're not going to give in to fear," said Pastor.

"I am deeply troubled by the recent series of attacks on our law enforcement officers," the governor said in her statement. "I ask that all Washington citizens join me in sending a clear message that these assaults on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated."

I was glad to read that the brother and his daughter helped to pull one of the officer's out of harm's way. At least they were trying to help. I have so much respect for the police; they risk their lives every day that they go to work and face so much hatred from people, simply because of their uniform. I hope that out of all these tragedies more people realize what courage it takes to be an officer and give these men and women more respect. May these men recover swiftly!

I'm a policeman's wife, and I can't begin to tell you how scared I am now, every time he walks out the door. I feel like once Officer Brenton was shot Halloween night, that it broke some sort of barrier. Now, these already unstable, evil people feel like, hey, if Monfort could do it, so can I. All you police out there, please be hypervigilant. And Seattle, please take time to say thanks to an officer. Like the pastor said, our police risk everything for perfect strangers.

The very fact you can leave your home and go to work or the mall or church is because of our proxyies, yes the people who are charged with the responsibility to watch over our homes and community in our stead, The police who work 24/7/365 are there if not by being invoked by your neighbor's call or your own, they make it possible for you to go to work and with reasonable certainty return to a home that is safe. Who else does this for you? Who else has the power of the law and the might of the police force to protect you? No one! Our only problem is the attitude of law in relation to the way criminals receive justice. The police are run ragged by the criminals because of the justice system not being capable of producing a justice that makes continued lawlessness the least desirable route for the perpetrator. If justice were to hurt, that is, be so distasteful to the perpetrator that they know the outcome is not worth the crime, then our police will be safe as will we. Change the laws!

KENPJSTOK: whaddya mean the police make you need them? Today in Sacramento, a cop pulled a man out of a burning car that had just crashed, and saved his life. I received assistance from a LEO when my tire blew out ---while I sat in his warm, dry car, he stood out in the pouring rain next to a busy freeway while CSAA changed my tire. Not only did he get soaked, but he was imperiled by his proximity to the slick roadway --- I was worried that someone was going to skid off the road and hit him. I hope this holiday season you are gifted with faith...........

@kenpjstok: I totally agree w/ you. Police is USELESS! I'll tell you why. When you need a police assistance, first you must go through 911 operators. These are the people who waste a lot of your time. When catching criminals or trying to survive in a dangerous situation, TIME IS EVERYTHING. But these 911 operators too stupid to know that. Then, you have to be extremely lucky to meet an officer who really cares. Unfortunately, most of them DON'T give a sh*t about you or your financial loss. They're just waiting for their shifts to end so that they can go home and get drunk. No offense PCS, you haven't done anything wrong to me. I'm talking about my city's police department.

I would ask all people that believe in the rule of law to join me in praying for the full recovery of these two brave officers. Pray for their families and all the officers that act as the guardians that stand between good and evil. Without these brave men and women our structure will fall into ruin. If you believe in the power of prayer join me asking the Lord to spare these two brave men.Lord give them back to us to help rebuild our strength. This area has been hit so hard Lord we need help with this and these two officers making a full recovery would start the healing. Protect all of our officer dear Lord and give them the strength to go on doing a most difficult job. Amen

I read on another site that there was a current restraining order in effect. If this is truly the case, why were the officers just "escorting" him off the premises vs. arresting him for violating a NCO? I can't rely 100% on the reporting of any news source, but I question it in the back of my mind. Regardless, I wish the officers and their families the best during this difficult time.

My Glock is closer than my phone. Police never made my life better. I've been robbed 2 times in the ppast 3 years. thank god I wasn't home. But they never put their life on the line for me. I will reach for my LEGAL fire arm before I call the cops. Know that to be true. Police make us need them. I can handle half the injustice done to me by myself. the ploice make us need them. Where were they and their heroics when crimes are commited the many many that slip through their fingers? I know I'll get boo'd and what not but to be honest. Cops just complicate justice. They want to be the hero and when they get shot they want to be the martyr. Society makes us NEED police. My glock is closer than the phone. I will not get robbed waiting for cops to respond.

Bronze, WHERE did you read that the officer was dead? ICU and Life Support doesn't mean he has died.. just means he's in really bad shape. My dad was in ICU on Life Support 2 years ago and I just hung up the phone with him 15 minutes ago. He's alive and well. Don't count him out just yet. Keeping both officers, their families and their co-workers in my thoughts.

Also, another wake up call for officers making a simple mistake of judgement of criminal minds. Hit the streets @ 150% and have the family understand you need to wind down to 80% when you get home so you can leave the next day @ 150%.

These scumbags that shoot at our Law Enforcement Officers or anyone that results in a death do not rate life in prison living on our hard earned tax dollars which on the average costs 1 million dollars per inmate a year. They should be tried immediately and taken to a PUBLIC hanging for a good ole neck stretchen. Let the crazies see that and they might think twice, if not they will at least know what they are in for if they survive the crime. Take the tax money saved to support their prison life and fund a college education for the victims children if they choose to go. If you took some of that money that is used to support a murderer or rapist in prison for life there probably wouldn't be budget problems State or Federal. These scumbags that live by the sword should die by the sword. When they commit a crime like this they commit it against not only the law abiding gun owner but against everyone. Hang' em high!

I will remember the officers and their families in my prayers tonight. I cannot believe this keeps happening! What are we to do. Criminals, by nature, do not care about laws at all. Nor do they care whether the gun they have is registered or if they have a permit or not. By no means being a defeatist, but it is easier for a criminal to obtain firearms than it is for law abiding folks. Nothing can stop these guys from killing whoever they wish if they are intent on it. Police, private citizens, or WHOEVER. We need to work for tougher laws to keep these repeat offenders behind bars, especially the violent offenders. We will never be completely safe - that would be utopia. Just thank God we have people who are wiliing to dedicate themselves to keep us all safe - and pray for them.

I guess the bigger picture is still not seen... These men and woman that wear the sheild and make a sacrifice for us everyday. We need to continually be thankful that we have people that continue to choose and stay in this job. Long hours, sacrifice of your quality time with family and friends, extreme stress, always the chance of being harmed or even killed and yet ,as many still continue to show, sometimes a job that goes without a thank you. At this time of season especially, we should think of those in law enforcement, the 911 operators, firemen, doctors... etc... those that make a difference perhaps even a child that would give his favorite stuffed animal to make a statement " I care" , let us take time show our thanks. By prayer, support, hug, email , a cup of coffee something to show we care. Wake up stop blaming sheriff dept. they are trained but when you are just having coffee , or ambushed it doesn't help. Praying now that helps. Sometimes it is all we have.

There is one thing that is becoming clear that family or friends were aware of the violent behavior or statements of violence and that they carried or had access to weapons that were prohibited in their possession and yet no one contacting law enforcement. It is time that family and friends to stop sitting on the benches and get into the game.

I grew up real near that place. When something like this happens in your "back yard" it starts to detract from some of the pleasant innoscent memories of your youth. I know several PC officers personally, having gone to high school with a couple of them, and one married to a former classmate of mine. I am relieved that this was not one of them I know personally, but still sadened that this has happend to anyone of their co-workers. All the ones I know, are outstanding husbands or wives, fathers, mothers and community participants. They just happen to have a job highly visable that involves risks. Most of us that work, go to work and come home, we are (fill in the blank) at work, but we are the father or mother of a child we are raising to be future citizens of this great country, at home. My prayers go out to the officers and their families.

I agree with collegeguy, this should be a forum for expressing sympathy and gratitude instead of unbridled anger and revenge with people's emotions running wild as no doubt were the actions of the perpetrator. It is good to hear that people who never pray nor believe in the power of prayer will attempt to pray during these times. In the hearts and minds of the children of these police officers there is, no doubt, great pain and brokenness, even moreso because of the season. Pray for their comfort and healing. I understand the Officers was hit multiple times, if this is so, pray for not only their lives but for complete recovery and full use of all their limbs. Pray for the peace of mind and answers for their wives, who live with the possibility of violence against their mates everyday. In a perfect world, there would be no crimes and criminals, no bad guys, and this includes those who cheat on their taxes as well as those who kill police officers.

FACT: Criminals will not be detered by any law, this is why we call them "criminals" - They commit crimes / they break laws, so laws do not apply to these guys. Making a law against red apples and guns will not keep a criminal from eating or having one, only you and me will be deprived of red apples and guns. The Criminals need to be dealt with in a direct aproach method, Criminals need to be punished fully, and with same intensity of consiquence that their actions created. You dont take away the soup spoon from your sister because brother whooped her with it, you punish brother for doing the whooping, and make sure sister can keep and use her soup spoon better next time. The weak minded will always want a fast easy fix, and think in simple terms. The strong must be allowed to surpass this effect, and remain capable of defending the weak. The Police are among the strong ones, and the police need guns. There are many many good citizens out there who keep and bear them for same reasons.

When I heard this news this morning my throat choked and tears welled in my eyes. Something is terribly wrong when this keeps happening over and over. If a person is guilty of intimidation with a gun and other violent acts, lock them up for 25 years. The lives of our police offices are far more important than wringing our hands over now we treat violent criminals. And please, God, let these officers survive this brutality.

No contact orders only seem to work in court, after it has been violated and people are hurt or worse..killed. Our police officers are heroes and should never be thought of or treated as any less than that! My prayers are with the officers, their fellow officers and thier famlies for Gods' protection and strength. I also pray for the daughter and the family of the suspect. His sickness and actions do NOT define who they are and may it not taint thier lives forever. As for the suspect, it's a good thing I'm not God and that it's not my job to judge.

Anger is what I feel ! My husband serves his country in a far away land. These officers and firemen serve right here keeping all of us safe. Without these men and women serving right here, we would not be safe. It’s sad and makes me angry that people have to do this and I’m really fed up with these type of people! It breaks my heart to think that all officers will have their guard up more than ever before. I can’t say that I blame them but it’s just downright sad not to be trusted. I want to say THANK YOU for your service. I don’t mean to take away from my husband and the other solders but the police men and women don’t get the respect they deserve. FYI Our community stands behind you- this type of behavior will NOT be tolerated!

I am sorry but some of you people are unbelievable. I mean 2 officers have been shot. They have families, They have lives other than just a police officers. All you want to talk about is the politics. How about keeping them in your prayers. How about keeping thier familes in your prayers. It does not matter who is reporting what, it does not matter who arms theirselves with what. The fact of the matter is, there are lives that are effected by this. We as a community need to realize that there is nothing we can do but pray and hope for the best. My thoughts and prayers are with these officers, their familes and all the officers around the world.

im only 16 years old but in the last couple months with the now 7 officers shot it makes me want to become an officer myself. this has got to be the worst year in our states history for cop shootings. this is rediculus. people like this guy and the last shooter should not be given so many chances, they are obviously a threat to the community and this is going to keep happening until something is changed. one guy has done is and now the rest are just going to keep trying to one up the last guy.

I would like to send my thanks & prayers for all of those that sever their communities. Be it as law enforcement & their support teams as well as our fire & rescue & of course all of their families. I wanted to be a WSP, I stopped nursing my son to go to the academy for the Explorers Program. I never once thought about being shot, I was more concerned if I would be able to shoot to kill, if I had to protect myself or fellow officer. Now days I find that odd that being a new mom, I wasn't as concerned about myself as I was for my future fellow officers. We have the best training programs in the county, especially with most of our law enforcement having already served in the military, which is the best in the world. I wasn't able to live my dream to the fullest, because of physical problems back then, I'm now disabled. In my heart I have blue blood. My heart & eyes are bleeding blue, once again for all of you! God Bless & keep each of you safe!

I hope everyone thanks them for the incredible job they are doing. Any LE people affected by this or anything else, check out SafeCallNow.org, they can offer some support. CollegeGuy, you are absolutely right. People do stupid things that are either dangerous, or distract the law enforcement personnel from what actually is dangerous. People, please try to figure out your non-emergency problems yourselves, and don't make a scene to prove how tough you are. Sometimes, you're not helping, you're hurting. Think it through.

"Postacomment they reported that ONE SUSPECT was dead NOT one officer. Both officers are alive but in CRITICAL condition. One at Harborview and one at Madigan." No - for 10 or 15 minutes, the Seattle Times website definitely said that one of the officers had died, and that a suspect had _also_ been killed. It has since been changed. I am still trying to figure out if this was a planned attack by both brothers, or if one decided to ambush and acted alone.

Peacelovingguy, The answer is that it depends on the vest. Most body armor only stops light to medium energy pistol rounds. Only the heaviest armor used by tactical teams and the military stop rifle rounds, even light rifle calibers such as .223. They really should be called bullet RESISTANT vests as no armor is truly bullet 'proof'. Even the best body armor in the world won't provide any protection if the point-of-impact is in an unprotected place, such as the head, neck or armpit. BTW, virtually every large game hunting round in common use will defeat body armor which is why trying to write a law banning 'cop killer' bullets makes no sense.

half the comments here are so utterly counter productive and yet nobody sees it. Who cares who has better info on this, as long as the basic facts are there and accurate. Also, lets show our support for our officers by not going gunho and getting them killed because we are being stupid and walking around with guns waving like a bunch of ignorant fools. Show them support and respect and stay out of their way so they can do their jobs! Also, the few people that decide to turn this into a political call to arms, shut up! I am so tired of hearing it is all the liberals fault when it is just as much liberal as it is conservatives faults with how far both sides have their heads up their behinds. Maybe for once, lets stop whining like little kids and instead of working against each other, work with each other? What a freakin concept!

Everyone, please remember the support personnel in all of this. The Law Enforcement Support Agency (LESA) dispatches for both Lakewood and Pierce County. These dispatchers and call-takers have been (and will be) put through a tremendous amount of stress. They will also often be forgotten in all the rush. Please remember to thank the support personnel. They also sacrifice a lot. Next time you talk to one, or to an officer, please remember to tell them how much you appreciate their hard work and dedication. It's the least we can do.

Too early to tell if that's the case, BUT if it is, then I think the LEOs need to be on a totally different play chart in order to protect themselves from here out. Wife left for the 3rd shift at Madigan ER a bit ago, made her promise to keep me posted... This will be the talk of the shop tomorrow at my WSP workplace. Praying for two more that got caught with a suckerpunch..... And jefflee.... now is the time for a person that has the nuts to do the job to step up. Follow your heart brother. You do the job, the whole lifestyle, because it's a calling you cannot ignore.....of course you hope to not use your firearm one day in the line of duty yet that is not the reality of this career. When you go in, you expect this (today, Lakewood, Seattle) is a possibility, much like the military, and if you are remiss in taking that mindset with you....then you have entered naive to how the law enforcement world functions. Honorable are those who run TO the crime and after the criminals, to save all others, sacrificing themselves if need be. Ever commendable is the strength of the sheep dog who's life path is to protect the sheep.....unfortunately at any and sometimes all cost. Team FPO (future police officers)

I agree in many ways with murcury, we as citizens need to stand along side our police, and say enough with the insane gangster style criminals. Many of us citizens take the strong stance on personal responsibilty, and personal protection. We are there for the state, The country, our community, our friends and family, and our LEO's. If we need to protect them sometimes, thats what it might come to. Be safe, stay protected. God i hope these officers are going to be OK!

While we're positive he's out there tonight, we don't know yet if he's one of the officer's that were shot and in hospital right now. As for those who are "Thanking God" that they once thought about going into law enforcement, but didn't? Good thing not everyone thinks like you do!!!
