Occupy Olympia asked to pack up after assault, drug arrests

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- State officials asked Occupy Olympia protesters Friday to remove dozens of tents from a lakeside park, saying the makeshift community they've established is unsustainable.

The Department of Enterprise Services said there are escalating public safety concerns at Heritage Park. The Washington State Patrol has listed a variety of reported problems at the site, and authorities have arrested one person for assault and three people for possession of drug paraphernalia.

"We will work with those who want to express their views in the appropriate time, place and manner," said Joyce Turner, director of Enterprise Services, in a statement. "But the current activity at Heritage Park is no longer sustainable."

Occupy Olympia has formed itself into a miniature city, with regularly scheduled meetings, food services and first aid. A state-managed bathroom facility is in the park.

Protesters said they are formulating a response. Monte Katzenberger, a member of the group from Lacey, said there have been no serious injuries at the park and that the group has a four-person security team monitoring the site during nighttime hours. He said the removal of shelters would be more of a safety concern because it would force the protesters to continue their stakeout without protection from the elements.

"What they are requesting us to do will cause more harm," Katzenberger said.

The state has been trying to avoid any disputes or confrontations with protesters. The Occupy Wall Street effort has led to similar stakeouts in cities around the country, some of which have had skirmishes with protesters. Officials at Seattle Central Community College say they are getting fed up with the movement's encampment at the school, estimating that the demonstration is costing it $20,000 a week.

State officials did not give a deadline for removing the tents, saying they hope protesters voluntarily comply with the request.

Scott: I think they should discredit the movement by the fact they are ruining stuff for the wrong people and protesting in the wrong locations. The movement is fine. I think we all agree people/corporations should pay their fair share, but the politicians make it possible for the corporations, banks, etc. to do all this. Much of it started and was perpetuated by the party about 90 percent of them support, however, because they "promise" to take care of them. And no...I don't vote a certain way. I vote for the person then don't vote for them again if they suck, lie and don't work for us. Anyhow...all I'm saying is that they should be camping in front of the White House and outting hypocritical politicians all over. What's really dumb about this movement is that many of these people WILL be voting for some of the biggest hypocrites of them all (starting at the top with Obama...huge hypocrite). It's kind of hard to be credible when this is the case.

I love how the powers that be want to discredit the movement with a couple of arrests of paraphanalia (what, a pipe and some pot?) and an assault. Sounds like a normal day at a seahawks game or at a bar. But now somehow this is supposed to discredit the whole movement. nonsense.

I still support the Occupy movement. When we've passed a constitutional amendment that says corporations are not people, then they can go home. The whole point is to be a pain in the rear until change happens.

@speakinfacts - thank you for your uninformed rant. I've never worked in food services and rarely eat at McDonalds. But it's clear that my criticism of Obama and the freeloaders...I mean...protesters is racist because all conservatives are white. What color is my skin?

lol @ GoAmerica,,, kinda what I was thinking. I would be one of the 1% if I could but we all cant be so, I'm happy with my job and home, more than some not as much as others. Its not about wealth, its about living. If you aint happy broke, you wont be happy rich.

@ speakinfacts.... It's great that you're the minority mentality. They have jobs, THATS why they're not at the rally and just because someone doesn't agree with Obama doesn't make them a racist. How do you explain all the people that support Herman Cain and don't support Obama ?? Kind of blows that theory out of the water. Grow up and get a life. LOL !

So why don't the 'tent' city folks just say they are protesting something, gather up their change for the permit and do the same? As far as the Occupy Movement, I think at first their hearts were totally in the right place but protesting the banks and Wallstreet is not really cutting off the head of the dragon. The head of the dragon is the Federal Reserves & that would take an act of Government and thensome to close that down. We all know in our hearts that our economy, our situation is really messed up and there is no clear fix. Even if we took every penny from every citizen and business we wouldn't even come close to getting out of debt. We are esentially slaves. OWS should disban - the movement should organize and actually use the voting system to propose legislative changes - put it ON THE BALLOT! That's why we have that in place. Exercise your rights folks but clearly camping out with your peace signs and funny looking masks do nothing but devalue your good intended efforts.

At this point I'd say their message is lost. And speakinfacts, disparaging people who are trying to be productive members of society as opposed to protesting it, is hardly an appropriate response to the more beneficial members of society.

They're making the movement they're part of look bad in the eyes of everyone. Get a job, plenty of holiday jobs available.. oh wait, they won't hire you with 5 facial piercings. Oh well. Seriously, protest daily if you want on a street, not camp out like its Woodstock 2011.

markf, the productive group of folks you’re referring to at Occupy Olympia have been around along time. They have just been known within different venues. There’s Hemp Fest, save a tree use plastic rally, save a bird use paper rally, save the salmon dismantle a dam rally, drive electric cars where are we going to get the power rally, police brutality lets destroy personal property rally, lets block the freeway rally so people who actually have a job can’t get home, and a variety of other less than productive protests.

camping out is fun, but does not make a difference- it made the news the first couple weeks , but now all you hear about is violence and drug arrest. They are eating alot of taxpayer money right now, that could be used for more constuctive ventures- I say give them 1 hour to leave, and then let the hounds loose!

Javajoe - It's kinda hard for someone to occupy a job when there are 4 people unemployed for every 1 job opening. Oh, and don't let your ignorance stand in the way of facts. 71% of the Occupy Wall Street protesters have a job.
