SEATTLE - King County has hired a new security company to patrol the downtown Seattle Transit tunnel.

County Executive Dow Constantine announced the job will now go to Securitas Security Services USA.

The change comes in the wake of KING5 Investigators' report on a surveillance video showing a teenage girl being beaten and robbed in one of the tunnels as unarmed, private security officers looked on.

The guards were not trained police officers or Metro Transit employees. They're contract workers from Olympic Security Services out of Tukwila. According to their contract, the guards are to "observe and report" problems, not to get involved.

After the Investigators' report, Metro Transit general manager Kevin Desmond said replacing Olympic Security Services would be the best way to restore transit riders' confidence.

In his press release today, County Executive Constantine said, "These guards are Metro's eyes and ears, and with this change we can have higher expectations of them in their ability to deter bad behavior."

Security's guards already patrol Sound Transit's Link Light Rail trains.

Constantine says the new guards will be fully trained in a range of tactics designed to defuse incidents. They'll "intervene in disputes when doing so will not put others at risk," according to the press release.

The new security team will be phased in over a 45-day period beginning next month. Olympic Security guards will continue to provide security in the tunnel during the transition.

Olympic guards have now been given additional training to allow them to get involved in some situations and will continue to be used to carry out other, "more limited security tasks."

While I don't agree with what "security" did in this incident (or rather, didn't do), it's true they were just doing their job as the contract with Metro dictated. Many officials were saying that, "They were operating within the scope of their jobs" and such. If that's the case, why did they then get let go and another security company signed on? If Olympic was just doing their jobs? "Hey, thanks for doing your job as you were told to, now goodbye while we hire someone else." Nice. I have to give props to Metro though, and the SPD and KCPD, for the stronger presence of LEOs in the tunnel and around the Westlake tunnel entrances (including the infamous 3rd AV corridor between Pine and Pike). I was down there last night (Saturday) and downtown Seattle was hopping, I tell you what, and I saw police officers almost everywhere. Thanks, KCPD and SPD for your presence!!

How about people grow a frickin' spine and take responsability for their own safety? Anyone that thinks these so-called security gaurds OR the police will protect them is an idiot. "Hollow-points. When you care enough to send the very best."

Why not give the guards proper training in the use of force and arm them?

I heard it was the Black Panthers that got the job.

Please allow me to elaborate. Olympic security guards will be laid-off due to contract cancellation. Securitas will hire laid-off guards to fulfill new contract. Same personnel, new uniform, same results. Security Guards are not commissioned officers in this state. They have no arrest powers, and are merely "the appearance" of security. Most thugs already know this. Metro just wants people to "feel" secure, not actually BE secure.

I work in the security industry and I make a pretty good living. Granted I would have stepped in and stopped what occured. I don't argue that. But what makes what I choose to do worthless? I don't sit here and call your job worthless. I would fully expect actions to be taken against these officers who just sat there and did nothing, but that doesn't mean the profession in itself is worthless.

This is laughable. Some worthless guards, doing the same worthless job, but a different name on their jacket. Definition of psychotic, doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

Any decent person would have gotten involved and at least tried to have stopped the attack - whether it be the pretend security or anyone else. Nobody getting involved in this brutal attack is a sign of a narcissistic society.

Um. I know Securitas doesn't have any more ability to step in than whatever was "guarding" before, at least they're not allowed to step in on the train at all.
