SEATTLE -- One in four kids are bullied according to statistics. It is a problem some are trying to solve with products. From backpacks to cell phone apps, there are some new ways to fight back against bullies.

The iSAFE backpack is marketed as something a child can use if they feel their safety is in danger because of a bully. It comes with a cord the child can pull that sounds an alarm. It costs about $60.

For $10 a month a parent can buy an app for your child's cell phone. It will scan texts and emails for language that might indicate bullying is going on, and if it is found the parent receives an alert. It is available at www.websafety.com.

Then there's www.bullystoppers.com, which doesn't cost a dime. It's a website where kids can anonymously detail encounters with bullies. School officials are able to view the postings.

University of Washington Professor Karin Frey just completed an anti-bullying program with Seattle Public schools. She took a look at these products and the website. Frey says the cell phone app interests her.

"I could imagine wanting to know more about this as a parent. A lot of the time these things do happen underground. What this would do is trigger that conversation with someone who could be supportive," says Frey.

Professor Frey recommends parents also look at what anti-bullying programs or resources their child's school offers.

Continued - ... it didn't stop until I showed them that I was not afraid, and violence was not necessary - You don't get that from a backpack or an iPhone app.

@salix - First off, I am sorry if what you read that I was 'accusing' bullies of lacking character, I never said that, so please don't put words in my mouth. Second: Bullying, essentially, is power through fear. What I teach my children is that no one has power over them and that they should now allow anyone to control them out of fear. Respect, courtesy, compassion, and empathy trumps everything, but that can only get you so far. There are times where you must stand up for yourself and when that time comes, you need the skill set to be able to handle the situation. Most situations are dealt with in a passive manner, but they need to know that it's alright to stand up for themselves, whether it's a bully kid, an adult, or our own government. I don't condone violence, unless it's the only option. I have first hand experience, I was made fun of, stabbed twice, punched in the face, and lit on fire, all while in a class room, it didn't stop until I showed them that I was not afraid...

Like I did when I was bullied in school. I put a fist in the bully's face and was never botherd again by any of the bullies in the school... The bullies are cowards at heart,, That is why now days they text or use the internet!!!!

I see that bullies got my comment removed. So I ask again, how does this backpack protect anyone against bullies? The kid might as well scream. It would be far more effective than yet another car alarm device that just gets ignored. Ten dollars a month is an awful lot of money when you can just check your kid's phone yourself. And allowing people to post anonymously on a website, accusing each other of bullying, seems to encourage bullying rather than preventing it.

I can see pranksters/bullies pulling those cords to send authorities running to false alarms to desensitize them to the alarms. I'll bet they'd be used more by others than the bullied child. Bullying in those days may be name-calling or a shove or two. These days some kids go through incessant insults, cruel rumors circulating the internet and possibly violence producing permanent devastating physical injuries, not done by one or two bullies but a whole gang. Then you have parents of bullies defending them and spineless administrators and people like @freemonttroll accusing the bullied kids as lacking "character" who will victimize the bullied child further... I fear for the future, seems like thug mentality is seen as "strength" and values like respect and courtesy is worthless in helping you get through life in the real world.

I taught my son how to fight... errr... I mean, defend him self. I taught my daughter how to quip a comeback when someone makes fun of her... I do this because that's how we used to deal with bullies back in the day; It builds character, in my opinion.

Clear? No it doesn't "raise" your child for you, what it does is give your child some reasonable privacy- and IF something questionable comes up then you will be notified. It would be my hope that my kids would come to me on their own, but when I child is being bullied they often don't go to an adult. And even though I constantly talk to my children, I'd like to have an app that would notify me instead of invading my child's privacy by constantly screening their texts. One thing is for certain, we need to stop coddling bullies and their parents. There needs to be real consequences for this unacceptable behavior.

I think the personal alarm may be a good idea for people using the bus tunnel, riding metro, jogging alone? Or maybe it would just give people something more to look at and not do anything about it.
