SEATTLE -- Three jets soared over the Seattle skyline Tuesday, causing people on the ground to wonder whether there was an emergency.

But the flights were a photo opportunity, said Kim Martin from the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Photographers were getting shots of the EA-6B Prowler, and two EA-18G Growlers with Pacific Northwest scenery in them for the Navy.

The jets are painted in World War II themes to celebrate the centennial of naval aviation, said Martin.

Thad Westhusing said the sound of the jets going by startled him as he walked to take pictures of a basketball game.

"I was walking toward the Green Lake Community Center to take a few shots of the basketball players, when I heard a loud roar of jet engines," Westhusing said. "I looked up and saw the three jets approaching, whereupon I grabbed my camera and started photographing them as they approached overhead and then into the late afternoon sun."

How much did this "photo op" cost the taxpayer???? When every penny counts, this is NOT the way to spend money.

My dad was retired AF, we often lived on base or near the base. First planes I remember was the RB66, while living in England and later France. Planes were noisy, but I got used to it. Later we were stationed at Vandenberg AFB in CA, missile launches night and day. That took time to get used to, a lot longer. Years later, I was in the Army, no matter where I was, a different type of aircraft. In Germany it was the F15, F 16, and A10. I remember the A10's popping in between small forests, as if they were practicing tactics. The Army flew AH-1a and AH-1q Cobras. pop up and fire tactics. All for practice, when you dont practice or fly as often, that can get you killed. Im near Everett Naval Station, they dont have planes here, its not an Air Station, but we have a carrier here when not deployed. In the Army, at one time I was a Redeye ( slot> gunner later team chief. Our battalion motto was "Shoot'em down, sort em on the ground, Sir".... Google Redeye Missile!

A great opportunity to thank our boys and girls, ready to fight for our nations freedom, for our Republic, for our future and our children's future. Remember, only in America can you criticize the same people who defend your right to do so. If you protest the Chinese Military in China, you get crushed by a tank, here you get to be on TV. This is not political, these boys and girls defend you. Remember that.

davebrown, Poland wasn't spending "untold $Bs" on their defense back in 1939. Crack open a book and see how that worked out for them.

"I love to see the firepower of America on display." Well I would love to send the bill for fun joyrides and showing off to those who want and appreciate them. To me it looks unneccessary. We blow untold $Bs on military, not all of it warranted for true "defense." My boss doesn't pay for me to go on joyrides.

@fghdgh: It didn't cost millions, and it comes out of their budget for the year. If they weren't doing this, they'd be flying somewhere else. And this was nothing like flying a 747 over Manhattan, which I also think was way overblown.

illbarry : That would be "Mach" and 761 mph, or 661 knots is Mach 1. Also its "Barrel roll" and not Mauch.

How many million dollars did this little jopyride cost? Obvioulsy, the government learned nothing from the N.Y. overflight fiasco. When is the military going to learn of the top-secret program, Photoshop?

Fighters are in and out of Tacoma All the time, its not an everyday occurance, but a frequent one, It never gets old, and the sound has passed by the time you spot the jet to see which one it is, or see if they are going to do some touch and goes or put on a quick barrol row show.. It never makes me think there is an emergency, if it was you would hear and feel the sonic boom and very few would actually see the aircraft, and you would only see it by accident. Mauch 2 or 2.5 in the case of the F-15 is barely able for the human eye to see and it would happen so fast you couldn't comprehend it. The sound barrior breaks around 600-700 knots, Mauch 1, and yes you can see the aircraft at that speed, and I don't think the good people of Oregon ever saw the F-16s when they passed over the last time the President was hear, and when they arrived in Puget sound they slowed their speed.

Dear freaked out ladies and gentlemen, if there had been an emergency, they wouldn't have been flying in that formation and they would have been going a LOT faster and making a LOT more noise! People need to stop wetting themselves every time they see something like this.

Isn't it odd that we have the largest military in the entire world but we almost never see them. Bring em all home I say. We should be seeing those things flying in and out every day.

THAT WOULD BE THE SIGHT AND THE SOUND OF FREEDOM! JUST LIKE SEATTLE TO ASSUME TO THAT IT MUST BE AN EMERGENCY. THOSE PLANES SPEND MORE TIME IN THE AIR TO BE READY FOR AN EMERGENCY THAN MOST PEOPLE CARE TO KNOW.

I'm amazed that there are actually folks in Seattle who would think there might be an emergency going on when fighters are flying overhead. I was begining to think they all had their heads in the sand. Maybe there is some hope after all.
