PUYALLUP, Wash. - It was a dangerous and unexpected wake-up call for a grandmother and her grandson Sunday morning. The two were sleeping at about 3 a.m. when an alleged drunk driver drove a care right into their front living room.
"The driver was going fast, hit and embankment above our home and flew into the side of our house," said 15-year-old C.J. Heggstad.
The car tore through a deck and a brick wall, then landed in the front room. Then a fire broke out.
Despite the noise and chaos, both C.J. and his grandmother Helen continued sleeping.
"I can't believe we slept through that," said Helen.
Neighbor Joyce Imholf heard the disturbance and ran over to help.
"I saw the flames coming from the back and started pounding on the windows," she said.
While Imholf was waking up C.J and Helen, the Puyallup Fire Department and Pierce County Sheriff's deputies arrived. The driver of the car, a woman believed to be about 19 years old, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
"She seemed drunk, and I believe she was way over the legal limit," said C.J.
C.J.'s home is now ruined and the power is expected to be out for a while, because the driver smashed into the electrical box.
"We'll be staying with friends for a while," said C.J. " I don't know how long it will take to clean this mess up."
The driver of the car is facing a number of charges, including driving under the influence.
