BELLEVUE, Wash. – A collision involving a semi-truck, a logging truck and 13 other vehicles blocked westbound Interstate 90 for several hours Wednesday morning and left a young girl in critical condition.

The chain-reaction crash left three lanes closed between 148th Avenue SE and the exit to I-405 for about four hours.

It started at about 7:45 a.m. with a semi truck that, for some reason, could not stop when it approached the morning congestion.

"The semi truck just started plowing through. It looked like a movie scene. Cars were flying up in the air. The logging truck’s axle flew right beside me,” said witness Sean Mee.

Logging truck driver Michael Mullins said the semi slammed into his truck, taking the trailer out from underneath him.

"I seen his cab and truck come over the left. I knew he was going to hit me, and from there everything went the wrong way,” said Mullins, who said all he could do was try to maintain control.

At least seven people were taken to the hospital, including a 9-year-old girl in critical condition.

"I seen her in my rearview mirror before I got hit, and when I got out she was screaming for her daughter,” said Mee.

At its worst, the backup was six miles. All lanes were back open just after noon.  Sign up for traffic text alerts

MAN! I wish that I could screen all the people insulting each other and just read what I came here to read. It's like listening to kids fight over candy.

All this fighting back and forth is trivial. Rachel is now in heaven with Jesus. I truly hope her mother never sees a word of what was bickered about. I pray for her family in their sorrow.

smroedell, the 9 yr old girl is still in critical condition. The little girls name is Rachel. All I know at this point is that she had an MRI done today and the last update about 5 hours ago was that the report from the Dr's was not good but no details were given. Please keep the family in your prayers. I will post an update when I hear more.

I just have to ask... does anyone listen to what is said on the news???? they said the SEMI truck HIT the LOG TRUCK!!!!! not the log truck drivers fault (he did an amazing job at getting his truck off the road with his logs) he did not have a failure or fail to attach his rear axle properly. I have known that log truck driver for 28 years and he has been driving truck for longer then that... so BEFORE you comment on how he did something wrong you might want to get the facts straight. my thoughs and prayers go out to all the familys involved...

@ deb0822.......news is news no matter who reports it, when its reported how soon they report it. That is a reporters JOB. As a friend of a news reporter I resent your outlook on how they do things. Also...NOT EVERYONE has TV in their cars...so what kind of statement is "guess you don't watch King5 in your car." ??? Are you ignorant as well as insensitive???

@Bravesfnz - For openers, Google the search string "you tube truckers defective brakes" Then, if you have at least two functioning brain cells, you should be able to take it from there with additional searches...

I feel badly for the people who were hurt and said so. And no, it didn't interrupt a 'soap opera'. A few mentioned being caught in the traffic and wondering what was going on....guess you don't watch King5 in your car. THAT was my point. I want to know about the news; I care about victims. What really irritates me is the high drama the news reporting agencies are utilizing - it used to be news reporting. Now we get 'breaking news' stories before they know what really happened that go on and on with reporters speculating on causes, etc. Give us the initial news then find out the facts before you 'report' in depth. I certainly apologize to any persons involved if they were offended, hurt or felt I didn't care - I do. It's the news agencies I get oh so tired of trying to be the first one with the biggest story without even having the facts. Think back; yeah - THINK!

Listen to truckers on CB discussing the corners the routinely cut running on defective brakes, and with excessive loads, while emulating their hero in Dennis Weaver intimidation moves...

Fusion some not all trucks follow closely or go to fast. A truck driver has a lot on the line in an at fault accident such as there job and lively hood and how they support there families. Talk to a truck driver they risk alot in our traffic daily and most of the time it is people cutting them off, or suddenly braking that is the problem. A car may stop fast a big semi cannot so think about that the next time you pull onto the freeway and do not go the speedlimit or forget how to merge. No worries this truck driver is going to be put through hell by everyone. May well loose his CDL and his job.

for anyone who regularly commutes the I-90 WB to I-405 route, you know that traffic in the left lanes may often be flowing at 60, but in the far right lane (going to SB and NB 405 (in particular) will abruptly slow as it approaches the off-ramp. Far too often vehicles very abruptly stop and start there, and while the left lanes may be doing 50 or 60 MPH, that right lane may abruptly slow to a standstill. Unfortunately a momentary loss of attention may result in an accident there, and as some have mentioned, it's much more difficult to stop a big rig. Add to this, those right two lanes have a long stretch of cars merging both directions. Accidents aren't uncommon there at all... this time it was a bad one. I could care less about those traffic signs, but they had nothing to do with the accident.

On the automated signs, lets say a car and semi are doing 60mph in different lanes pacing each other. The car then pass the semi and changes lanes to be in front of the semi. The automated sign quickly changes from 60 to 50 or 40 mph. Lets say this car is so afraid of the WSP scare tactics of ambushing people at change of speed signs, see this speed change and slams on their brakes. Semi cannot stop as fast.. accident.

deb0822 called this "trivial breaking news". Sorry to interrupt your TV programming, however this was not trivial. Very poor choice of words, Deb. This was a HUGE accident that involved many people... loved ones, family members, friends, co-workers, people on vacation, people going to work and children. My Dad dove a logging truck for 36 years. One of my worst nightmares would be a load of logs coming undone on the freeway and spilling out to on-coming traffic or a semi-truck plowing through a traffic jam. Reach down and check on your sense of humanity in between commercials, Deb. I was on that freeway early this morning taking my husband to have some eye laser surgery. We just missed it. I pray for those injured, those that lost their vehicles and the trauma they are all suffering right now. Thanks KING 5 for bring us the news.

deb0822, You need to have you head checked. I was stuck in this not knowing what had happened and if I had, I would have taken an alternate route. However, having seen the aftermath of this accident, all I can say I I pray that the little girl survives and that everyone else is ok as well. It sound like that truck had a major failure with his brakes along with the fact that his rear axles were left behind him a good 100 yards from where his tractor was with all the logs still attached to it. From the description and seeing the truck, I would guess he had a catastrophic failure of his rig or he failed to attach his rear axles properly and when when his rear end lost air pressure, those brakes locked up and maybe that caused the failure of his rig and the momentum was too great for what brake power he had left with the amount of weight he had still attached. I can only go off what I saw and read about it plus my CDL training but no matter what, this was a scary accident

I'm with Sir_Real on this one. I drive into town every morning and the speed of traffic is always slower than the automated speed signs say. Much slower in most cases. Can and will cause accidents when people don't pay attention to real time traffic.

@ktmchick...A semi truck wasn't going to stop in time and the logging truck (a different truck) swerved (and unfortunately then jack knifed) to avoid it. The semi caused the accident but the logging truck caused the chain reaction that followed.

How does a logging truck loosing it's rear axel and causing a chain reaction equate to "someone was being distracted, and not paying attention to traffic around them"?

OK - sad collision; hope no-one is killed. If you live in the area you already KNOW the ways around this. If you're a tourist you probably aren't watching King5. It frustrates me to no end when something I choose to watch is interrupted by trivial 'breaking news' that goes on and on and on.....Give us the news - go away & let regular programming play & if you need to come back in during a commercial to give an update fine. Is this 'COLLISION 2011'? Always seem to have to name things....the ONLY bright spot in all of this is seeing more of Brad ; going to really miss him!
