SEATTLE, Wash. -- In Seattle, the city is trying to keep its pledge to patch potholes within 72 hours of getting a report. But there are so many potholes right now that city crews are challenged.

As Seattle's Pothole Rangers fill one, another pothole opens up. On Tuesday, 25 new potholes were reported and the city is trying to patch them as fast as possible.

"It's more than we can do right now," said Pothole Ranger Darrell Lutovsky.

The city's pothole budget took at big hit this year. It went from $5 million down to $3 million and one Pothole Ranger crew was cut.

So far this year, more than a hundred people have filed a claim against the city saying potholes damaged their car. The city has paid out more than $37,000 in settlements.

The city asks residents to call the Pothole Hotline at 206-386-1218 to report a problem.

Ban studded tires. Problem solved. People don't need studs from November to April. If it snows, use chains for the day.

I live on the edge of a hill, so my address is on one street but you literally cannot access my house from that street. You *have* to go down an alley, it's mostly paved but it has a section that is gravel and has absolutely terrible pot holes. Really awful. The city must be responsible for the alley, right? I mean, it's basically our street. Everyone who lives along this section has to drive down it every day.

what a joke the city is doing nothing to fix pot holes. there are so many along the west side of west seattle it would take the city years to fill them all. yet they have yet to fill one.

Yep, the unions are going to make sure that the cost is triple what it should be. Unions are the WORST cause of our current economic conditions. But, ON SUBJECT; I have to wonder if the city (or perhaps a grossly overpaid consultant) did any studies on the effect of their new de-icing chemicals on blacktop. Seems to me that these potholes formed much quicker and more numerous this year than in the past. Since the stuff ruined the paint on my car in 2 days during the snow storm, well I guess the city can pay for a new paint job on my car......and every other resident who had to drive in it. So, let's see, Mayor, besides the increase in pothole expense, $37K in auto damage claims from said potholes, let's figure five times that much more for more claims yet to be filed, then ten times that for all the paint jobs you're going to be paying for, and you've not even BEGUN to patch all those potholes, and paying the 'Rangers' $33/hr.......are you feeling stupid yet? Ya SHOULD!

Pothole rangers earn 33.00 per hour! Yay unions! The private sector could have every pothole filled cheaper and faster! Mahalo!
