King County Metro officials say the voters have spoken with the failure of Prop 1 and cuts will be deep. Total, 16 percent of bus service will be cut, including the elimination 72 routes and the reduction 84 more.
Metro General Manager Kevin Desmond said cost cutting measures over the last five or six years and have produced $800 million in savings or new revenues. But that wasn't enough so cuts are being made. People who depend on routes that will be cut or reduced will have to find new routes, or do what transit is designed to prevent -- put more cars on the road.
The cuts will take place gradually to ease the hardship on riders. In addition to the service cuts, a number of drivers will also lose their jobs. Metro doesn't have an exact figure, but estimates that 500 will be let go.
