SEATTLE -- A man who confessed to stealing money from the downtown Seattle Sears store decades ago gave the money back Monday, and with interest.

At around 10:00 a.m., an elderly man hand-delivered an envelope addressed to "Sears manager" to a customer service counter on the second floor.

Inside the envelope was a note and a $100 bill:

"During the late [forties] I stole some money from the cash register in the amount of $20-$30," the note read. "I want to pay you back this money in the amount of $100 to put in your theft account."

"I think his conscience has been bothering him for the past 60 years," said Sears manager Gary Lorentson.

"That is heartwarming," said one customer, "awesome."

"It must have made him feel good inside to do that," said another.

Store security cameras caught the man on video, but they won't release it, and they don't know who he is.

The store plans to put the money toward helping families they adopt during they holiday season.

There was a Librando bus driver who found money from a case box who happens to have left by a Japanese national during his trip to Cebu. The man kept the money for while but just a few years ago, he used the money for himself. Opened up several business such as auto shop, grocery store, many bakeries, piggeries, etc.He got a mistress aside from his wife to handle all the business affairs. He said, he can still get himself 10 more wives with a lot of money he still has. Can this man's conscience be at peace with him while the foreigner might have been in big trouble loosing his money?

Wow lovemygrandkids...that is a sad statement of what the government and Federal Reserve have done to our money. Our dollar is so worthless now that we have to spend $280 to buy what $20 something would have bought in the 40's! That is sad. That much decline only since 1970's when $ was removed from the gold standard. It means when they say spending is up (as an indicator of economic growth) that it's just inflation, not an increase in tangible goods being purchased. It explains why penny candy doesn't exist and why it has HFCS rather than more expensive sugar cane sugar in it. I know it exists (inflation) and don't pause to think about it until something that makes it really obvious like this story and your comment really shine a light on it. No wonder we are poor...taxes up, inflation up, employment down.

Actually, to make it totally right - he would have to pay $278 to $281 to make up for the $20 - $30 stolen. Remember inflation. Back in the late 40's early 50's that amount of money would go much farther than it does today. Today it seems like not that much but back then a dollar could buy much more. Heart is in the right place but still owes!!

FYI: The people who are smarting off against this kind gentlemen who say they think he should be prosecuted......... folks do you know what a troll is? A troll is someone who posts just to get people riled and upset. Then they sit back and laugh at the chaos they created. Do yourself a favor and ignore the trolls. Don't feed them. This gentleman did a sweet thing and Sears is doing the right thing using this money to help families in need.

Lookin' back in front of me in the mirror's a grin. Through eyes of love I see I'm really lookin' at a friend. We've all had our problems that's the way life is. My heart goes out to others who are there to make amends. -------------- We've been walkin' the tightrope tryin' to make it right. Walkin' the tightrope every day and every night. Walkin' the tightrope bring it all around. Walkin' the tightrope from the lost to found.

@anonymous....you are a world class jerk. They should track you down and throw you in prision for that pack of juicy fruit you stole when you were twelve. Since you are only 15, the statuate of limitations has not run out.

FIrst of all, Sears would never prosecute a 60 year old petty theft, in fact, the statute of limitations has run out and I doubt the police would even have responded had Sears been stupid enough to call them--so to those who think he should be held responsible, good luck with that, maybe you should spend more time actually looking into the law, rather than looking like fools. This gentleman wanted to make a wrong right, and Sears has chosen to use the money to donate to one of their holiday charities. Props to BOTH of them.

He made good on his debt to society. With interest. With no expenditure of court or jail costs. He didn't have to, he wanted to. He is clean. Jeez folks, for everyone that has ripped me off for money or things, if one of them came back and said, "hey, here's what I owe you with interest" after I long ago wrote it off, I'd be glad. It means he's been thinking about it and it caused him worry. I bet he does not have more behind him because this type of behavior is not typical of a serial thief. Let it go and be happy that he did what he knew was right even if years later. For all the people that have taken from me, the same thing would be welcome...come pay me back for the stuff stolen from my garage and shop, the money you were supposed to "pay me back", the money on the payments you were to make to me for items sold to you on "payments".... Give this guy credit. He was not in trouble and never would have been...it was his conscience....something lacking in younger people apparently

If you all were decent people, you wouldn't be so afraid of justice being served on an admitted criminal.

I have a hard time reading all these comments that condemn and vilify the actions of this person. Who are you to judge what he did in the past or what he did to attempt to rectify it? How many of you live in a glass house, by the way?

Maybe he was destitute and stole the money to feed his family. We will never know. Hopefully someone will give YOU the benefit of the doubt once in your life, Anonymous and ProudAmerican. I guess you weren't aborted (too bad), so oh well. You're done then.

We need to find this guy before he strikes again. That 100$ won't even cover what he took, considering inflation. How many other innocent people has he victimized? He and his crimes need to be brought to light; his victims deserve no less.
