RAVENSDALE, Wash. - A King County sheriff's spokeswoman says a 19-year-old man died a day after being hospitalized in critical condition after he got into trouble in a fast-moving section of the Green River.

Sgt. Cindi West says the Ravensdale, Wash., man walked with his family Monday afternoon to swim initially in a shallow, slow-moving part of the river. He struggled and went under when he moved to an area with a stronger current.

West said the young man's father swam out to help him but was unable to hang on.

Other swimmers helped bring the man to shore. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

West said the water in that stretch of the Green River was just 40 degrees.
