EDGEWOOD, Wash. -- Police across Western Washington are searching for four suspects wanted in a fatal home invasion robbery in Pierce County that started with a Craigslist posting. The homeowner was shot and killed, and his wife and sons were assaulted.

Pierce County detectives believe the robbery was committed by the same people involved in a similar crime last weekend in Lake Stevens.

The robbery happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday at 106th Avenue Court East in Edgewood, just north of Puyallup. Police are looking for three men and one woman. Authorities say the four came to the house armed with guns and zip ties with the intent to rob the family.

Investigators say the family was apparently trying to sell a diamond ring on Craigslist. Police say the suspects posed as potential buyers to get into the family's home. Once inside, they shot and killed the 43-year-old father, pistol whipped his 14-year-old son and tied up the mom and the younger son. Police say the younger son managed to get the ties off and called 911 after the attackers fled in a car.

"I brought the boys over here because the one that had been hit really hard in the head," says neighbor Kamille Papini. "He was holding his head [saying] 'Mom, my head hurts."

The home was ransacked and a number of items were stolen. Detectives believe the ring was taken from the home.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner identified the man killed as James Sanders. Relatives of the family are upset and can't believe this happened. The family is extremely close – so close many of them live in the same neighborhood.

Sanders' cousin Ryan Vaughn lives across the street from the family. He says Sanders and his wife lived in their dream home with their two sons. Relatives say the two were soul mates, married for eight years in a blended family.

"He was a great guy, good father, good husband worked really hard," said Vaughn. "We were supposed to leave for a family vacation tomorrow."

Before heading off to a family reunion, the couple posted an ad on Craigslist to sell the diamond ring. According to relatives, a man and a woman came to the house posing as potential buyers. Shortly after, two masked men showed up.

"(Sanders) knew how to handle himself. I have no doubt they did what they did to them, but for God sakes he's already tied up. Take what you want. From everything I heard, he wasn't trying to put up a fight. Just get these guys the hell out of his house," said Vaughn.

Deputies swarmed the home, which is located on a private road, and combed the area for the suspects, but their search came up empty.

Friends were also stunned to hear about the violent tragedy.

"People are sick. I don't know what to say," said one friend. "It is sad and we are praying for them."

Neighbor Robert Papini remembers how his neighbor helped him when his dog died.

"Jim came over helped us and we were burying him and he was sitting there crying with me about my dog," says Papini. "He's just that type of person.

Investigators say they're still working on specific descriptions of the getaway car and suspects. Right now, they are described as three men and a woman, "dark-skinned." The suspects were wearing bandanas so the witnesses said they were not able to get a good look at their faces.

Police also recovered some evidence along Highway 156 heading northbound near 227th Street. Police believe items stolen from the house were thrown out of the car.

"Overnight we found some evidence off of 277th Street and Highway 167. We believe the suspects left here, they went northbound on Highway 167 into King County, and then they took the 277th Street exit, where they threw some evidence out the window, which we have recovered and we know it was taken during the robbery," said Ed Troyer, Pierce County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives said a tip from the public is what police need to solve this case.

A fundraiser will be held at the salon where Sanders' wife works this Sunday, May 2. It will be at the Salong 10 & Day Spa at 1420 Meridian E. Suite #10, in Milton from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A fund has been set up to help the Sanders family. Anyone interested can donate to the "Jim Sanders Memorial Fund" at any Bank of America branch.

KING 5's Elisa Hahn, Drew Mikkelsen and Teresa Yuan contributed to this report.

Time to enforce stricter punishments, these criminals deserve Capital Punishment, keeping them in prison will be too good for them. They are nothing more but human-garabge and parasite to our society. If only, this country enforce stricter punishments then people will probably think it twice before committing any crime.

@Boobiewah- I completely agree with you. I think once you kill someone, your right should be forever gone. These criminals has more rights than we do. Here goes our tax dollar again. More mouth to feed in the prison.

I suggest public hangings for these criminals and anyone who would rob and kill a father in his own home in front of his family. Even if these scum of the earth got the death penalty they would sit for 15-20 years in prison waiting, the laws need to be changed so there is a real and effective deterrent. Until then we will keep on seeing this in the news. Violent crime of any kind needs to be dealt with swiftly and strictly. If you shoot someone you should have your hand cut off. Look at other countries where they have strict punishments, they do not have these problems like we do.

I concur with Miller, "Race" has nothing to do with this crime. If you brutalized or killed someone regardless of your color you should be put away. My heart goes out to the kids and wife. I guess this is a lesson learn for all of us. I have posted something on Clist before and some of my family buy stuff on Clist. We just have to be really careful.

This is for third_position... Ban Hate? ban yourself, your little rant about racism is one of the most hypocritical displays of hate I have ever read. I can tell you that because I am interracial. There is never an excuse for brutalizing and murdering ANYONE! black, white, brown, purple, and any other catagory people want to place on that list. "Dark- skinned" does that automatically mean black? the majority of other cultures in the world have darker skin than most "European" people. I could go through a long list of cultures where they have "dark skin", the suspects could be any of them that we know of at this time. So you are saying to not lock up any dark skinned person, even if they do a crime? There are millions of black, brown, and "dark skinned' people in this world, who are good decent human beings and they are proud of their heritage and many who I am related to who would never brutalize, rape, and murder anyone because they are entiled to do so because of some racial vendetta

Whoever did this crime they are ruthless. This family will never live a normal life. I hope they will get caught soon and be put away forever. Or better yet, get rid off them. These are the menace to our society. They will kill just to satisfy their addiction. How could they sleep at night? Where is their conscience? My prayers and thoughts are with the family and friends.

I never allow craigs list buyers into my house, they get as far as my porch and I am armed. Besides an immediate home invasion, if strangers come into your home....there could be child predators, or the people could just be taking an iventory for a future robery, they get to see all that you have, people that are home, and a great look at what type of security you may or may not have. This is not a new crime, these things have gone on for years from adds in the paper as well

Is it just me or does there seem to be a huge growth in these type of things lately? Super scary - the low lifes are getting more daring and invading peoples homes when the people are there which is causing deaths and injury. We have guns at our house (I hate guns) but my husband has them and has taught me that if I ever need to pull one to not hesitate, just aim and shoot. I see why now - I would rather be on the side of the dirt with the grass. Sorry for all this family has suffered - may these thugs get caught and get all they should have coming to them.

Geez, do y'all self-defense types have to sound like predictable Dirty Harry ripoffs when you suggest that being prepared to defend your life in this situation could be advantageous?? Please understand, I love my guns, I have plenty, I shoot often, I use silloutte targets at the range and will be the first to choose THEM over ME if there is NO other choice, but when you resort to stupid and overused one-liners and overly macho 70's era cop movie terms ('scum", "punks", "let god sort em out"...*BARF*) or suggest that your housecat and infant be armed to help you lay down supressing fire in the living room, you sort of undermine the idea that home defense can also be for the sane, calm, non-paranoid and healthy-toothed folks out there too.

I am so disgusted at these lowlife criminals and extremely sad for this family. I am a nice and welcoming person, but I am convinced now more than ever to trust no one. A man who approached me for a "parking dispute" and was yelling at and threatening me as I was holding my babies will never know how close he was to getting shot. I hate to say it, but that is the kind of world we live in- and I am so terribly sad for this family.

2Cents - You are totally right. I agree that we should be able to live free from fear of death when simply selling an item via Clist and that the 'sick' individuals perpetrating these crimes need to learn how to live a positive, non-intrusive, and self-sustaining life....but in the interim until the perpetrators decide they would rather contribute to happiness instead of profit off of greed and violence, we are going to have be somewhat practical and careful for the sake of safety of ourselves, families and property. We dont even need Utopia, just relief from the fear of mortal violence when simply carrying out normal everyday tasks.......***NOTICE: commentor carries no cash or valuables when commenting***

lungren - that's an insanely insensitive remark to make without knowing the whole story. Implying that the murdered man died as proof of darwinism is just as ridiculous as those people that think that there was something the victim could have done. Better judgement in situations like this can always be applied after the fact. Anyone can be caught unaware, unless you already have a gun aimed at the potential buyers when they arrive, the result would be the same with anyone else. When the whole story comes out, everyone will know the facts. The end result will be people that use craigslist to sell or buy, will do so in more public places and possibly with "back-up". Hopefully these four people will be caught and get what they deserve.

And that's why if you have to do a home pickup for Craigslist on something, you have a buddy cover you from an advantageous point with a firearm. It's sad, but you have to have a "overwatch" if you're doing a deal for something valuable on Craigslist. If at all possible though, you should NEVER give someone the option for home pickup when dealing on Craigslist or any other site like it.

Wisely, __Joe_Auburn__ said, “I'm sure that ...they already have an extensive criminal record ...our 'feel good' system keeps sending them back out there ...Use your voice...vote out the people in government that don't get this...” ___ To that I add: we must use our outrage (and brains) and DEMAND that politicians and judges provide their voting/case records when running for election. They will not provide that info if asked just once, twice, or thrice. We must make a stink about it, be vocal and DEMAND the data. In most every case, a criminal can be traced back to a dysfunctional family. When you see a pregnant teen, unwed mother, or swaggering mental-midget “dad”, you are looking at the breeding source of undisciplined and demanding demons. Parenting is NOT the same as breeding. Honestly, I am glad to be far into my lifespan.

The commenter that called this 'sick' was right on. The commenters that are blaming the victims for being trusting are off the mark. It is sick that we have to live in a paranoid state. They could have just stolen the ring. That's bad enough, but to value life so little as to kill for it?! That is what is so sick. What a sick place that we have to be paranoid to even open our front door or post an ad. Can't even blame Craigslist, it's no different than the old little nickel want ads. The problem is that we live in an extremely angry and violent society. Sick, sick, sick.

But our 'feel good' system keeps sending them back out there - just like the kid involved in the Tuba man's killing - already free and doing more crimes. I also would suspect this isn't the first strong arm robbery these guys did off craigslist, but until now just wasn't important enough to go after them. Wake up people - someone with an extensive record shouldn't be on the streets. Use your voice - vote out the people in government that don't get this simple concept.

If I did, I would arrange to meet in a very crowded public place. I am very capable of defending myself and would do so in a heartbeat. I pray for the family and for the soul of the father. Just senseless killing. I would love to be on the "posse" and get to help hunting down this scum responsible for this tragedy. If I was in charge, I would issue shoot to kill orders.

Living in Edgewood...I am sick....my kids go to school with thier children. Come to my house... I dare you...... Please have common sense when using any internet site that releases any personal information. A large dog and concealed weapons permit would've had a different outcome. We are all praying for you. Ed Troyer is on it. They will be caught.

I think people should really be careful when selling items like this or any items. I also believe that people should also be careful when wanting to purchase something off of craigslist too. The seller could have made a fake ad, knowing that whoever comes to buy the item will more than likely show up with a stack of cash. So even when you're buying something, ask to meet in a public area. If they refuse to meet you then forget about buying the item.... it could be a set up.

The police should look into the VATOS LOCOS 13 gang. A couple of years ago 5 members of that gang 4 men and 1 woman were on a spree of robberies and when they robbed a youg man he shot in self defense and killed one of them. They acted as a ring but were all given immunity by the king county disctrict attorney. Since then they have moved down to the tacoma/kent area and they were borrego, chato, diablo and an unknown female. Kind of odd that the same are they moved to has a robbery with the same number of people minus the one who has since been desceased.

rdog0121 - I understand what you're saying... I wouldn't want anyone coming to my house if I were selling expensive jewelry. Common sense goes a long ways. If I were selling expensive jewelry, I would be waiting with my finger on the trigger in a coat pocket at Uptown Expresso in Seattle, if several men and a woman that I never met wanted to look at expensive items for sale. I mean, who would allow several men to enter their house while their family is at home and not be ready for an ambush? They are coming to look at expensive jewerly OK?

Goes without saying...whenever posting something, agree to meet in a PUBLIC location! You'll be much safer.

I think I just trew up in my mouth a little bit. WTF is wrong with people? what could you possibly get from a house to make it worth killing the occupants that are total innocent strangers to you? A few bucks? a TV? a necklace? really? again, BARF. People, be careful. CListers are anonymous, you dont know anything about the person you just gave way too much info to. Think before you agree to meet at your home to sell items. Meet folks in public places if possible, or at a very least, meet them out in the street in plain view of the neighborhood with your house locked up behind you and your cell phone at the ready with 911 dialed and ready to go if you hit the button. Think before you tell them your whole days schedule in email so they know when you will and wont be home. These A**holes managed to violently destroy a family in a matter of minutes over a few dollars by simply taking advantage of a free website and our misplaced trust in it.
