LINCOLN CITY, Ore. - A 72-year old man died Sunday morning after he was swept out into the ocean while trying to rescue his dog off a Lincoln City-area beach.

Oregon State Police troopers say at about 9 a.m. the man was walking on the beach with his dog when he reportedly threw a stick into the water for his dog to retrieve. Witnesses say the dog got caught by a wave and was pulled toward the surf and the victim went to help his dog. Another wave hit the victim and pulled him away from the beach.

A witness attempted to save the victim but was unable to get him back to the beach.

North Lincoln Fire & Rescue arrived and a rescue swimmer reached the victim, bringing him back to shore where they started CPR. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man's dog was able to get back to shore and survived.

Also getrealppl, not once did I call this man stupid. I said the people posting on here saying that they would do the same thing are not too smart. There is a difference. The difference is this man may not have known about the dangers of trying to save his dog. Now everyone that has read this story now knows the dangers. So to say that you will do the same thing as this man did, means that YOU are not too smart. I do have a heart, this is a very sad story, with a sad ending. But I also have a brain. Which means if I see a story of a man, woman or child that died trying to do something. The first woods out of my mouth would not be. I would do that.

getrealppl you can't understand normal thinking if you think a dogs life is worth more than a humans. Also you must not know how to read since I said this IS A SAD STORY. So are you saying people SHOULD kill themselves trying to save a dog? Now if you are a parent, is it really worth having your kids grow up without a parent. Because you died saving a dog? If it was a child I would try saving it for sure. But if it was my dog, I would have to say no.

And you're still being judgemental, I see. At 72 years old, do you know how clear this man's mind was? You call him stupid, but the reality is that as you age you just can't think as clearly. I really hope that those around you have more compassion for you when you grow old than you are showing toward this man.

Even if you are lonely and without family doesn't mean that you have to be STUPID. Have you ever been out in the water at Cannon Beach or any other place on the Oregon coast? The riptides are no freaking joke! I went out in the water near Tacoma Narrows bridge and learned a hard lesson. It's basically suicide, experienced swimmer or not. I have a heart and would try to rescue a dog within reason. But I am not STUPID.

To carlconstantine and jeeperscreepers-Assuming you HAVE hearts, you should probably learn how to use them. For all you know, this elderly man had nobody but his dog left in his life. The dog was obviously very important to him, otherwise he would not have jumped into the water to save it. Who are you to decide for someone else what is/should be important to them? Shame on you both.

Sumithryo, I totally agree with you. You should have taken your grandpa out of that nursing home and thrown him into the powerful riptides of the Oregon Coast so he could fight and die like a man. And not without dignity in a nursing home... If you're gonna die, die fighting... No worries mate, like a day in the Irish countryside.

This is a sad story. However, you people saying you would do the same thing are NOT TO SMART!!!!!! Do you really think this mans family are glad the dog survived but not their Father,Gandpa,Uncle or Brother?Lets be real here. A dog is a pet. Pets are replaceable. Yes it is sad when you loose a pet. But a pet is NOT worth a human life.

Good thinking. Jumping into riptides is taking your life into your own hands... Anybody that is 72 years old should know this. What did he think that he was a 72 year old Super Man?

The waters on the oregon coast can be really dangerous with the riptides. I was pulled out in one when I was 14 with my 11 year old brother in the early 90s. We however got lucky with lots of swimming experience and made it out ok, but even with that lots of times is not enough to save you from the surf. I stopped going out in the ocean after that experience and couldn't imagine jumping in at 72.

Man, what a waste... He gave his life for a stupid dog that can't swim? Let this be a lesson. If a dog can't get back out of the water, then he's not worth rescue efforts. If I throw my dog into a volcano and he doesn't come back out, then he needs to be replaced with a younger and stronger dog.

This is so sad, however, I would be happy for-and proud of- my Grandpa if this were how he passed away rather than lying comotose in a nursing home.

Its natural for dogs to swim. Give them a change to rescue them selves. I would have done the same thing if needed.
