A man died while scuba diving near the Edmonds ferry dock on Saturday afternoon.

A ferry crew notified 911 dispatchers when they spotted the diver floating in the water near the dock at about 12:15 p.m.

"The crew deployed a small rescue boat from the ferry and brought the diver to the beach south of the dock. Firefighters on the beach performed CPR, but were unable to revive the diver," said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The 60-year-old Marysville man had been in a group of divers who had been volunteering their time for a maintenance project at the underwater dive park north of the ferry dock.

The man's fellow divers told police that although it's common to dive using the buddy system, the man was swimming back to shore alone. Friends said he did that often and they never worried because he was such an experienced diver.

Police say the man had plenty of air in his tank.

The conditions were said to be perfect for diving.

An investigation is underway.
