SEATTLE -- A man fell almost 100 feet to his death at the Seattle shipyards Friday.

The unidentified man was on a worksite at Vigor Shipyards when he fell from a structure, hitting scaffolding several times on the way down.

Seattle Fire spokesperson Kyle Moore said the victim fell between 75 and 100 feet.

The man suffered severe trauma to his entire body, Moore said, and medics attempted CPR on him multiple times before he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness to the incident said the man was working on an oil rig at the time, but that information has not yet been confirmed.

It is not surprising that this would happen at Vigor. They don't really care what the Unions position is on safety. They just continue their routine business. Vigor takes actions, in opposition to the unions, whether they like it or not. Vigor has a "If you don't like it, sue me" attitude.

As a member of this particular union I can safely say that it does not look out for or protect it's members. It allows Vigor and other companies in the shipyards loophole their employees into unsafe and rediculous work hours, often working them 7 days a week 12-14 hours per day in exhausting work conditions. Employees are burned out and in addition to being unsafe in the work place they are driving home half asleep on the roads you are driving your families on. If the union was doing it's job this father and husband wouldn't have been 100 feet up with no safety gear. The company cares about the bottom line of getting the job done as quickly and cheaply as possible and the union looks the other way as tragedies like this happen. They don't care about all the children this young man had and has now left fatherless. They don't care how his wife is going to put food on the table for those kids, they care about covering their rears and making it look like the other guys fault.

My thoughts and prayers are out there for his wife and kids, his family and friends. When I met him many years ago, I found him to have an easy smile and awesome sense of humor.

Wow, the shipyard and Boeing both had serious injuries a few hours apart. Gotta love the unions taking care of their people.

Sympathy and prayers for this man's family. As far as the comment on unions damaging this country, we can thank unions for protection in the workplace. This is an uber capitalist country and most corporations have little care for the safety of their workers.

One would think that working at that height a safety line and harness would be standard for that job.

This kind of tragic event reminds me of why workers formed unions, and why government regulation of industry is still necessary. My condolences to his family and coworkers.
