SEATTLE – A man who apparently decided not to silence his cell phone at a movie theater last week was allegedly choked by another moviegoer who was angry over the disruption.

It happened Nov. 21 during the 5 p.m. showing of “Tower Heist.” The Seattle Police Department redacted the name of the theater in the incident report, but published reports indicate it happened at the Majestic Bay Theaters in Ballard.

According to the responding officer, the victim’s cell phone went off a couple of times near the end of the movie. He checked to see who called him, prompting the suspect who was seated in the same row to yell, “Shut it off.”

Minutes later, the phone rang again. The victim apparently said something to himself. The suspect allegedly said, "Better keep your mouth shut."

At some point, the suspect left the theater twice, brushing past the victim’s legs.

When the suspect returned a second time, he allegedly walked past the victim then turned and grabbed the victim’s throat.

The victim told police it lasted for about 30 seconds and that he could not breathe.

The suspect then allegedly told the victim he was going to report it to the manager, but would claim that the victim was the one who committed the assault.

Two witnesses told police they saw the suspect lunging at the victim and putting his hands around the man’s throat.

The police report redacted the suspect’s statement to the officer.

There was no immediate word on whether charges would be filed.

This is a prime example why I will never go to a movie theater again. People on Cell phones, people that don't shut the F... up.. Bringing little kids to PG 13 and R Rated movies that won't stop crying.

It is amazing how rude people have become in theaters. My favorite story is the time someone changed a baby's P@@py diaper behind me in the theater. I was so disgusted that I went to the manager and they didn't do a thing. They said it wasn't against their rules. DISGUSTING!

Although I'm not for violence, I'd say the cell phone owner is a TOTAL JERK.

The guy was an idiot for not silencing/shutting off his phone. The man who choked him was an even bigger idiot. I've seen some jerks in theatres before... grown men picking on little kids who get excited during an animated movie. C'mon...get a grip! The least you can do is be polite and if that doesn't work then go directly to management and ask for a refund.

They both sound like a couple of complete jerks. No one's kind any more and it really bothers me.

Choking somebody is NOT an excuse to do that. This annoyed movie goer behaved badly and inmaturely. If he had a grip he should have talked to the managment. But taking things into his own hands was just dumb.

I kinda think the vic deserved it. I mean, how many times do they show on the screen - and post in the theatre - to turn your phones off?!? People who break the rules deserve to be punished. Besides that, I loved Tower Heist!

I might have an accident while returning from the snack bar and dump a large cola on the meathead with the phone. Tell him how sorry I am, then return to my seat with popcorn, milk duds and a big smile on my face....

Please turn off your phone, not silence your phone would be a more appropriate message. Political correctness does not permit it.

B.S. If you let your phone ring during a movie, after it rings the first time, you deserve to be choked out.

People in my office building are very courteous to their office mates and leave their office when they are on their cellphones. Unfortunately they talk on them in the hall right outside of my office!!! How about people at the gym that walk on treadmills with their Bluetooth talking on the phone for a half hour while they work out? Drives me nuts!!

Sometimes you get an awesome crowd at a theater, but I'd rather watch movies w/ on a home theater setup to avoid this nastiness. HD projectors have gotten pretty affordable these days to get the same effect, minus the silly distractions. Paying over $10 for any movie, even in 3D, is too much. I've had too many bad experiences at movies, from choosing a hyped lemon, to rude patrons. Over the last few years, I make current-release movie theaters a once to three times a year thing at most. Some theaters jack the sound up so high, it's hearing-loss inducing...Not to mention the overpriced, BK Whopper-level fattiness of the popcorn, and other concessions, to avoid. I'd rather pop my own healthier popcorn at home...

Arrogance, self-importance, rudeness. While I have been sorely tempted, self-control and common sense have held me back...at least from the violence. I have interjected my opinions on the subjects discussed by someone on a cell phone next to me on a bus, however. I find it amazing when they respond that it is a private call. NOT if I have to listen to it!

Not that I think he should have gotten choked, but dude should have turned off his phone or left the theater to answer it. Just sayin.

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immoveable object? Violence! It is senseless, gratuitous violence that titillates and excites thoughtless minds. Everyone should be embarrassed by these mindless actions.

Simple solution: Install signal dampener into each room in the theater, you walk in for the seats and suddenly no signal. Walk out, you got your signal. Everyone happy. Then you wont have this kind of reaction to unintelligent people.

Two wrongs don't make a right, but I am amazed at how this escalated. I think if the man gets charged with assault, the "victim" should at least pay for his movie ticket and everyone else who had to listen to his phone. Turn it off moron!
