GRANITE FALLS, Wash. - A group of nine Granite Falls High School students are gearing up for a national competition in energy efficient car building.

The group will become the first-ever, all-girls team to enter the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas competition.

The annual competition is held in Houston, TX next week.

The objective is to build a prototype vehicle that will travel the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel. They have no blueprint for the design.

"This is not just about being an all-girls team, it's about showing everyone we can do anything" says sophomore Katie Jackson. "I wanted to be a part of something big."

The team will race their vehicle on a tank of diesel gas the size of a can of soda. Last year's record was set by a vehicle that traveled more than 500 miles per gallon on average.

"I've been eating and breathing this project every day!" says Sarah Turner. "We are planning on winning it all."

The team has been working on their vehicle since September as an extenuation of their Manufacturing class at Granite Falls
High School.

"It all comes down to next week," says Junior Shante Stowell.

Granite Falls has one girls team and one boys team in the competition. This is the high school's first-ever entry thanks to grant money and community sponsors.

The Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Competition begins March 24.
