BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A Bellingham couple is nervously waiting to hear what has happened to the two children in Haiti they have been trying to adopt for more than three years.

Kendra and Brett Schlenbaker had just finalized the adoption of two Haitian children when the earthquake hit. They have heard the children have survived but have received few other details about how their children are doing or how they can get them out of Haiti.

Kendra Schlenbaker fell in love with Javinski when she visited a Haitian orphanage three years ago.  When she found out he had an older sister, Jennika, she and her husband agreed to adopt the two siblings and bring them back to America.

But the bureaucratic red tape has taken nearly three years.  Last week, they were waiting for a formality, just two more signatures from Haitian officials so the two children could leave the country and come home.

Now they aren't sure if their paperwork can be found or if the officials are still available. The building that handles immigration is across the street from the presidential palace, which was destroyed in the earthquake. And the orphanage where the children were staying has been severely damaged.

The children have spent the last few nights sleeping on mattresses in the courtyard. The Schlenbakers say they want the children home and are ready to pick them up now.

The Schlenbakers are working with Congressman Rick Larson's office in the hopes the U.S. government can help the Haitians finish the process to get Jennika and Javinski out of Haiti.

An aide for Representive Larson's office says there are other families in our state who are in the process of adopting Haitian children and they are doing what they can to assist those families as well.

JCman-What adoption has to do on how these children turned out in adulthood? Thats something that could'nt be known or seen. Any biological children they had could just as well turned out the same way. Thats a very ignorant thing to say. God bless this couple for giving these children a chance for a brighter future and the opportunity to hopefully be productive citizens one day.

Unfortunately a lot of children in the US that are available for adoption are born drug addicted and many people don't want to deal with the issues. Also there is the law that states that the birth mother has up to 6 months to change her mind and can ask for the child back. Now ask why people are going to other countries to adopt! This happened to my husband's step-brother and his wife. They spent thousands of $ setting up a nursery and had their baby for 3 months when the BM decided she wanted her baby back. How fair is that? I think that once you sign those papers that should be it. Once that baby enters the home it should be forever.

people are so ready to adopt, but to adopt two little white children is dfficult and very expensive......and lets not forget that its very difficult for white parents to adopt black children......so all in all, this is a win/win situation for both the parents and the dear children.... I must say its discerning to read all the negative.... God bless these people and these children.

How can people politicize the adoption of a child. If you fall in love with an orphan wherever you meet them, you must have the biggest of hearts. The naysayers must lack brains and a heart.

My friends Abby and Scott have been waiting for their adopted son, Alex, to come home from Haiti for almost 2 years...if the US and Canada can offer rush/refugee visas for these kids - it will free up space in the Haitian orphanages for kids left orphans from the earthquake. Call/email senators Murray and Cantwell please! http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/34857887/ns/today-today_people/

there are several reasons that families choose to go to other countries to adopt children. 1) We have been killilng our babies thru abortion for years 2) The system in this counrty for adoption/ fostering is a joke. Does no one pay attention to the stories on THIS website. It is next to impossible to adopt. Why do you all( not ALL) have to be haters? This was a nice story about a good couple who wants a family. What has happened in Haiti is horrible. Spend some time thinking about that. Not picking apart why this couple, God forbid decided to adopt two kids that needed a family. Would it have been less offense to you if they had only adopted ione?

People adopt from other countries because unlike here there is little chance that the kids will be taken away when a biological parent changes their mind. What kind of heartless person would see a story like this and turn it political, GET A LIFE.

I say be careful when adopting because of "falling in love" with the child or children. My brother adopted three cute little girls because he "fell in love with them" and raised them to adulthood. The middle and youngest don't have very good judgment and did poorly in school, in spite of he and his wife's best efforts. He says he now believes a lot more that intelligence is inherited. He knew very little about the parents other than they had been living in a car when they relinquished their children for adoption. As a result he's now 63 and raising two of his grandkids because the mother couldn't take care of them.

While it's true that all these children need homes I cannot justify going to another country (and spending loads of money on airfare) to adopt foreign children, when there are thousands from YOUR OWN COUNTRY who need love too. What happened to patriotism?

Does it really matter where this family adopts their children from? These kids need a home and this couple is happy to provide one for them.

stryker--agreed. what IS it with Americans adopting chilrden internationally when there are so many needy ones here at home? I understand that sometimes domestic adoption is more difficult but wouldn't it be more rewarding to save a child from your own homeland rather than some random country?

We have enough problems here already, they will get here and then demand reparations after the liberal establishment gives them the coaching.
