SEATTLE -- Ten World War II veterans headed to Washington, D.C. Friday morning for a trip a lifetime to get a first-ever tour of our nation's war memorials.
The veterans were both excited and tired as they waited for their flights at SeaTac Airport early Friday. The living legacies have been through a lot and will soon get a first-hand look at how they contributed to U.S. history.
More than 60 years ago, these veterans were barely out of their teens and headed out to fight in World War II. Now most are in their 80s and are traveling together again, this time to our nation's capitol.
The group Freedom Fighters Honor Flight provides free trips to veterans to visit classic military memorials in Washington, D.C. It's an ambitious trip with stops at all the World War II memorial as well as other significant wars. For these veterans, it's a chance to look at their past and see what they've accomplished.
The veterans arrive in D.C. Friday afternoon. They will spend all day Saturday touring the memorials and then return on Sunday.
The Freedom Fighters Honor Flight network has helped more than 50,000 veterans see the memorials. They're rushing to provide these trips to World War II veterans. They point out that as every year passes, we have fewer and fewer veterans left.
