SEATTLE – A pickup truck was totaled Tuesday morning after colliding with a Sound Transit Light Rail train in South Seattle, disrupting rail traffic.

The accident happened around 11:50 a.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and South Dawson Street. Sound Transit spokesperson Bruce Gray says the truck driver was making an illegal left hand turn and was hit by the train.

The train runs between the north and southbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The pickup driver, Reid Saario, was driving north when, he says, he became confused at the intersection with the tracks.

"I watched all of the cars go down and I was going to take a left hand turn. Then I realized I can't take a left hand turn. By the time I had done that, the train had hit me," said Saario. He walked away with some cuts from the broken glass.

"Somebody was definitely on my side. The Lord or somebody, said Saario. "It was like the crushing of an aluminum can."

Even before Sound Transit opened the Light Rail line, it had a public education program to try and prevent accidents like this from happening.

"The main thing we do, is put up the right kind of signs and put up as much warning as possible. You need to follow the traffic rules and not make a left hand turn where there's no left hand turn, especially if there's a train right next to you," said Gray.

The line is back in full service. A bus bridge was used to get passengers around the scene for about three hours.

Police say Saario could be ticketed.

Since the line opened about 13 months ago, there have been at least nine collisions between trains and vehicles.  Sound Transit says it expected three times that many.

God was watching all of us on the train that day as well as all the people in the truck. The train was full and no injuries, amazing. When the train finally stopped I was sitting in the seat that was staring right at the driver of the truck. It was a scary thing and yes, it was an accident. I am not from Seattle but travel there frequently and am told that the train is somewhat new and a lot of people are having a hard time getting used to it. I live in the Bay Area with Caltrain, BART, Muni and Light Rail. Accidents happen with these trains too.

Welp, God =did= make it happen, he makes EVERYTHING happen, so he must have saved this guys life and made sure another 15000 children died of starvation today, his mysterious ways , etc . All that aside, this idiot is no worse than the dozen or so imbeciles I see cut across the tracks every day. Nothing short of a loaded tractor-trailer is gonna put much of a dent in that thing

Saario is lying. He probably just wanted to take a shortcut. He should be ticketed and make to pay for all the damages. Someone was on his side alright. However, IQ was definitely not on his side. This idiot should not drive anymore. Shame on him. It's not too difficult to see this big big train moving toward you.

Not buying it, Saario. Like this guy had never driven around that area before and didn't know the roads!

Well hopefully he relized his mistake and learns from it. Hope he's got excellent insurance. Cause the repair job to the train may be a bit pricy.

you know im reading the comments that people had left.....no matter who fault it was i just thank God that no one got seriously hurt or died on the scene.....you know i take the light rail every sunday to go to church at rainier beach.....as for people who drive in this beautiful state......you have to pay attention to the signs and traffic ahead or trains ahead......i wasn't there but from the video footage it does look like the truck driver made an illegal turn at the intersection......i see this all the time espically in downtown seattle..........law enforcement needs to really enforce traffic laws among a lot of things......im a nice guy but when you violate a traffic law you need to be cited........i know it sounds harsh but i don't think its fair that innocent peope get hurt or die because of your NEGLEGENCE three things washington state drivers should always remember when driving......PAY ATTENTION.......GIVE THE RIGHT OF WAY TO PEDESTRIANS.......AND AWAYS BUCKLE UP

'"Somebody was definitely on my side. The Lord or somebody", said Saario.' Yes, Reid, it was the son of an omnipotent, invisible superfriend (or one of his two dads), and not the precise engineering of over a ton of steel and glass designed to protect you from the physics of an otherwise devistating crash that allowed you to walk away from the wreck.

Once again.. a preventable incident had the driver simply followed the rules.

Wow, that does look like an illegal turn! I think that whenever you run into a train, it's probably an illegal turn... eventually, I mean at some point. Red light enforced - no need for a traffic camera here!

I dont know why people hate the light rail so much. I loved BART, Cal Tran and the VTA light rail when I lived i California.

One day the trolly will derail into oncoming traffic when it hits something with some weight to it.

Uh, I like light rail, but looking at that intersection, I can't figure it out either. Depends on how its signed at road level, but I see how its confusing.

gardenstreet said on August 3, 2010 at 2:40 PM "Truck Collides with Sound Transit Train" is accurate headline. As written it is misleading and implies blame for Sound Transit. Actually the BLAME MUST GO TO Sound Transit for designing and building such a lame, slow, dangerous, and generally-unusable-by-anyone-not-within-walking-distance-of-a-station system.

Go to picture #2 in the gallery, there are literally over 20 city/government workers standing around the wreck site, and thats just whats visible through that particular camera lens. Figure each one is making either close to, or some well over, 100K a year. Money well spent.

I expect a lot more of these types of wrecks with the more trains they decide to put on the city streets. I can tell you why no one was injured in the train, it was probably empty.

This is another example of a self-important driver thinking that a light rail train will stop for someone that gets in the way. I live in that neighborhood and see this type of thing all the time and it will be only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt and will (probably sucessfully) sue the city for damages.
