LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Officers with the Lakewood Police Department have a new buddy.
Lt. Heidi Hoffman says following the tragic loss of four officers in November, a local German Shepherd breeder was moved to donate a puppy from a recent litter.
Hoffman says the 3-month old male puppy will be housed with Officer Paul Osness until he's mature enough to be tested for possible K-9 work for LPD.
"He's got a lot of growing up to do," said Hoffman.
Officer Osness has chosen to name him “ROGeR”, which contains the last name initial of the four fallen, Mark Renninger, Ronnie Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards.
The pup's registered name with the AKC is Lakewood Police Department’s “The Dance." At the memorial service for the officers, Officer Gene Sievers sang "The Dance," a song made famous by Garth Brooks.
Hoffman said the pup is a joy to have around.
"He comes in the station and makes everybody happy," she said.
