Italian police accuse Knox's parents of defamation

PERUGIA, Italy — The parents of American student Amanda Knox are being investigated for alleged defamation for saying Italian police abused their daughter before arresting her in the 2007 slaying of her British roommate.

Curt Knox told AP Television News on Saturday that he and his ex-wife, Edda Mellas, received notice of the investigation Friday as they arrived in Italy for the final week of hearings in their daughter's case.

He said he found the timing odd, given that a verdict in the case is expected at the end of the week.

Italian news agency ANSA said Knox's parents were being investigated for alleged defamation stemming from an interview they gave Britain's Sunday Times in June 2008 in which the father alleged police had physically and verbally abused his daughter during questioning before she was arrested.

Police have denied harming Knox.

"We received some papers yesterday, it is true, we haven't see the file yet," Curt Knox said, declining to comment on the specific charges.

Both Curt Knox and Mellas said they thought the timing of the investigation was unusual.

"Well, it is odd that the timing is coming out now, five days before the end of the trial, and this is supposed to be something that happened over a year ago," Mellas said.

KING 5 News spoke with Anne Bremner, an attorney for the family. She said the accusation of defamation is significant. If Amanda Knox's parents are charged, they could be detained in Italy or disallowed from entering the country. That means if Amanda is found guilty, they'd never be able to see her.

Knox and Italian co-defendant Raffaele Sollecito are accused of murder and sexual violence in the 2007 death of Knox's roommate, Meredith Kercher, a university exchange student from Leeds.

Kercher's body was found in the apartment she shared with Knox in the central Italian city of Perugia on Nov. 2, 2007. Prosecutors believe the Briton was the victim of a drug-fueled sex game involving Knox, Sollecito and a third defendant, Rudy Hermann Guede of the Ivory Coast.

All three have denied wrongdoing.

Guede was convicted of the same charges in a fast-track trial last year and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He is appealing his conviction.

On Saturday, Sollecito lawyer Luca Maori spent six hours trying to refute the prosecutors' case in his closing arguments, saying only one person — Guede — was responsible for Kercher's death.

"The killer was one and only one," Maori said, adding that even if there were other footprints in the apartment it was logical since Knox and her other roommates lived there.

He said Sollecito was a "gentle, reserved, well-educated" young man who has been unjustly jailed for over two years for a crime he did not commit.

Sollecito's other attorney gives her closing arguments Monday, followed by closing arguments by Knox's lawyers.

A verdict is expected Friday or Saturday.

Prosecutors have requested life terms for Knox and Sollecito.

Geez. I've never blogged much before, but after reading input from all of you, I actually registered and logged in so I could set a few minds straight. Obviously, none of you know this family, well I do, personally, and we have known Amanda since she was in elementary school. The ones who should be on trial here are the prosecutors eager to see their names in print on a scandalous story full of sex and intrigue. Well they certainly made that happen. We just returned from Italy. How would YOU like to be held without bail in a foreign country for TWO years awaiting trial for something you did not do? Ms. Knox has been characterized as some sex-crazed female; nothing could be further from the truth. Her parents whose lives are in financial ruin have only repeated what Amanda stated publically. How is this slander? Check your egos at the door if you side with this prosecutor and join such a fact-less bandwagon. Americans aren't the best visitors, but this case is heart-breaking.

Staying away from the idea of who is or is not innocent for a moment, anyone that believes in the Italian judiciary system should read the book "Monster of Florence". This is a true story about a series of murders that occured in Italy. Many of the major investigators outlined in that book are now involved in the Amanda Knox trial. I would love to believe that Amanda will get a fair trial and a fair outcome but, sadly, I fear this may not prove to be true. As for this latest attack on Amanda's parents, this is the same tactics used by prosecutors as described in the "Florence" book. A sad attempt to discredit naysayers of the prosecution. Whether Amanda is guilty or not, is for the courts and jury to decide. Same as here in the US.

When a foreign government entity can and does bring charges for defamation against a civilian, albeit a foreign civilian, it reminds me why I love America. We enjoy more significant civil rights than most other citizens on this planet. Too bad so many of us seem to take them for granted. In this week of thanksgiving I am thankful for our great nation!

Fire-roasted. Nobody wants an innocent person to end up in jail. But remember that her fingerprints in the blood, as well as her feet prints, also in the blood, were found at the crime scene. In the US for something like that people are sent to the death row.

Fallcityres- For her isn't possible to plead guilty. It's too late. As per the parents, even if they will be convicted they will get a few months of probation ( maybe 4 to 6 ) and they will still be able to en ter and exit Italy any time they like.

This whole trial is an embarrassment. The chances Knox was involved in this crime is less than zero. This reminds me of the duke lacrosse case; no evidence and a hot head prosecutor. For all of you who wish her to be convicted of this crime she obviously did not commit....I wish for your child to be convicted of a crime they did not commit. Maybe then you will show some compassion to others.

Flyinggaff. 1 - How do you know that there are no proves against Knox? 2 - If Knox was an italian citizen she would have been at home with her parents awaiting for the trail; she is in jail because she is at high risk of running away: SHE HAS A US PASSAPORT, NOT A EUROPEAN ONE. 3 - You say " one person already convicted of a crime ", so? Isn't possible that the crime was committed also by Knox and her italian boy friend? 4 - Italy a Country of thieves? I'll pay for the trip, fly to Italy and repeat the same comment, or enter the first pizzeria that you see and repeat the same comment; let's see how corageous you are. You may want to rinse your mouth with clorox before talking about the Country of Cristoforo Colombo, Michelangelo e Leonardo da Vinci. You see( talking about thieves) the Ceo of Enron wasn't Italian and Madoff isn't italian either. Just two examples of your fellow citizens.

I think it's ridiculous that Amanda is still in Italy almost 2 YEARS later, with nothing connecting her to the murder. Of course, she's probably not completely innocent. Someone was already convicted, whether he did it or not. Sure they're in a different country, but this is plain stupid it's taken sooo long. And now they want to bring her parents into the mess? I don't think that they were purposely trying to downtalk the Italian police. Now there is threats to put them in jail or not be allowed in Italy... What if Amanda is found guilty? They would NEVER get to see her again.

What will be interesting is if Ms Knox is found not guilty and her parents are held for trial for defamation and can't leave Italy. If I were them, or at least Mrs. Mellis, I would get out now. At least she has a job to go home to. Maybe in the end ALL of the Knox-Mellas group will be charged, convicted and be residents of the prison in Italy. This is way too bizarre!

It seems that, in a country of thieves, it takes a lesser standard to keep a person locked up for two years. No eye witnesses, no forensics that tie Knox to the murder and one person already convicted for the crime? Scratch Italy off the list of countries I would care to visit.

Gee, I thought premarital sex was bad. What the heck is sex game???? If you want to have sex, then, have sex. If you want to play game, then, play game. If you want to kill someone, then, just kill, but be responsible.

now it didn't even post the first part, weird. Well anyway she's a foreigner so she'll probably be found guilty. That sucks... the guy already found guilty of murder probably was the one who killed her.

That is why I choose not to travel abroad. Anyone can be set up. She may be guilty, but waiting better than a year to bring up the defamation charge takes away any credibility that the country and it's law enforcement has.

More "Ugly Americans" thinking they have the same freedoms here, insulting police and making false accusations, as they do in a foreign country. Lesson not learned and forever repeated by the ignorant.
