SEATTLE - Elisabeth Huff reads the last letter her granddaughter Amanda, wrote to her.

"Don't worry about me, together we can do everything," Huff reads, while holding back tears.  "She always writes this at the end, in German 'Here comes the sun, let it be, I know I'm not alone, even when I'm alone.  That's Amanda.  That's my last letter."

Huff had hoped on this day she'd prepping to cook rouladan, Amanda's favorite Christmas dish.  She anticipated holding her first born granddaughter in her arms.

But an Italian jury convicted Amanda of murdering her British roommate in 2007 and sentenced her to 26 years in prison.

"My husband served in Vietnam.  I dealt with that easier because I knew there was help, there were people working with him in that situation.  This is harder on me on that," she said.

Huff said it's hard to watch from thousands of miles away, Amanda sullen, weak and at times defeated.  It's also financially devastating.  At 72 years old, Huff is $250,000 in personal debt.  Collectively, the family has spent more than a million dollars on attorney fees and travel, and it's not over.

"We lived by what our income let us have.  This just blows us out of the water," said Huff.

The brightest spot comes once a week, when Huff recieves a letter from Amanda.  Family and supporters also keeps her hopeful.

"That's it, you have to believe.  That's the only thing that keeps the neck stiff, your back up, your chin up," she said.

Last night was tough, Huff says she spent the night tossing, turning and crying.  Tonight however, her resolve is stronger than ever.  As she does every Saturday, Huff will sit down to write Amanda a letter, filled with love and words of wisdom, the kind only a grandmother can give.

"This time I'm going to tell Amanda we're all behind you.  We're all going to fight this through, you just need to help us out by being strong and sticking it out," she said.

Amanda's aunt, Janet Huff, says the gloves are now off.  The family will be fighting aggressively to get Amanda home through the appeals process.  They're not sure how they'll pay for it, but they're thankful for all of the contributions through the Amanda Knox Defense Fund.  They're asking supporters not to forget, they need the support now, more than ever.

No, actually I am not a family member or a friend of Amanda Knox. But I do know is that justice DID NOT prevail in this case. There was enough resonable doubt and that is what matter. Of course Amanda's DNA would be found in the apartment and items throughout the residence. She lived there! Her conflicting statements probably came out of fear (from none of her family being in the country, no legal counsel at that moment, being in a foreign country).

Thank you, tomrochelle. I feel sorry for people that hate so intensely that they find it in themselves to believe a distorted, contrived story. The more that comes out about this case the more innocent she looks. The Italians owe her much more then her release. They can't even begin to give her back what they took from her.

Amanda Knox would have never been arrested or brought in for questioning, had this happened in the US, in England, or any other Western nation. She would have cooperated with the police, as she did in this instance. There would have been an analysis of DNA evidence at the crime scene and a discovery that someone, not having her DNA sequence, was involved in this crime. His DNA profile would have been found in the crime database, and there would have been a search for his whereabouts. After being arrested, and brought back for police questioning, his admission of being at the crime scene, "but I didn't kill her", would have, as the saying goes, cooked his goose. She would have never been subjected to an endless police interrogation, that used techniques designed to break members of the mafia. Her character would have never been trashed in the media, with every detail of her life exposed in a light most unfavorable to her. She's innocent, end of story.

I am honestly so embarrassed by Americans who are saying she was a “target” or a “victim”. Give me a break!! Did it ever occur to you that maybe Amanda is actually guilty?? People do commit murders with no prior history of violence, or motive. And if you don’t think so then you are ridiculous! I agree with the post that stated that once you cross our borders and go into another country, you’re responsible for yourself and your actions. And if you are convicted of a crime based on their legal system, then tough!! I hope she has to serve out every single day of that 26 year sentence, and I hope she suffers the entire time. And God help us all if she comes back to Seattle.

If the family is now broke after fighting this legal campaign, that means they are as idiotic as their precious lil' Amanda is depraved. You wonder if in retrospect they wished they gave their little princess some better moral guidance, if any at all. I am not saying religion per se, just some basic/universal concepts accepted by nearly all: Don't be a skeeze, stay away from drugs, and most important, not to kill people.

mrsboyd616~ Same reason why you're talking about her. And why must we leave the judgement up to God? He doesn't exist.

I'm sorry - did I miss something? Did all of you grow up in Amanda's home? DId you witness how she was parented? Were you there the night that girl was killed? If you were, then your comments are warranted. If not, leave the judgement up to God and go back to your own lives. None of us knows what happened that night or why. And we never will. So why talk about it? If you think she's innocent, pray for her. If you think she's guilty, why are you wasting your time talking about her?

emimacausbrybel you must be a family member and people don't have any respect for your "aaaahhh she didn't do it" opinion. There was a LOT of physical evidence, there were LOTS of lies out of her piehole and SHE is the one who tried pointing her finger at a completely innocent man. Grandma who went into debt for $250000 probably should be put in a funny farm. I hope this convicted murderer enjoys her 26 years behind bars. And to the people of Italy well done and I will be making my first visit to Italy in July 2010.

Hi guys, I'm from the UK. According to media reports over here, US citizens all think Amanda is innocent and that us horrible Europeans have stitched up an American 'out of spite'. It's refreshing to read that many of you feel Amanda at least had some part in this and should be held responsible. Your media it seems has taken a very different view, but great to see independent thought and reason. I personally don't think she delivered the fatal blow; but she lied from the start and was certainly involved. If she had told the truth from the start, she would have got a lesser sentence. This is a very sad situation for a number of families - not least of all Meredith's - who have conducted themselves with dignity throughout. I do hope you have been able to see the press conference with the Kercher family; the difference between them and the Knox family is startling. RIP, Meredith.

The U.S. media has presented a slanted case from the beginning. If you think she's innocent it's because you're family or friend and the only information you will expose yourself to is biased. Read about the case from news sources outside of the U.S.

Am I supposed to feel sympathy about the Knox's money situation? The blame for this whole sorry mess lies with Amanda. It is unbelievable that she has put her family through this. If they choose to throw good money after bad, that is their decision. I hope they're not expecting people to donate money to their 'cause.' Any money donated should go to Meredith Kercher's family. They are the ones deserving of it.

Perplexed, you admit that you are new to this, so I am not going to jump down your throat, but your hypothetical questions all have sensible answers: In Italy, the burden of proof is set up more in a "guilty until proven innocent" manner; in Italy, the burden of proof is not beyond a reasonable doubt; and the explanation for the lack of (more) physical evidence could easily be explained by Knox's sighting at a local store (when she claimed not to be in the area...) buying numerous cleaning materials... I freely admit that I do not know for certain the facts, as I was not in that flat that night, but it seems Amanda Knox was, and it also seems highly likely that while she was there, she was involved in the murder of Ms Kercher... If people feel they must contribute to the "victim" in this case, they should remember that Meredith Kercher is the real victim, and donations should be made to her grieving family... At least the Knox family still gets letters from their little murderer...

I became aware of the Amanda Knox story only recently, during the last news cycle. I am no expert on the case but from what I can tell she is an innocent victim of a group of overly zealous prosecutors that for what ever reason had it in for her from the very beginning. If Amanda had taken part in the murder, in my opinion there would have been a huge amount of evidence against her. A murder of this sort is messy. Drugs, sex, ritual, and knifing make for a huge amount of evidence. How can the prosecutors explain away the lack of DNA and other evidence? It seems to me that in Italy when someone is accused of a crime he or she is guilty before proven innocent and not the other way around. What ever happened to proving a case beyond a reasonable doubt? What perplexes me are some of the viscous comments made above. Just imagine facing a 24 year sentence for something you didn't do. Or even worse, imagine this happening to your daughter? What has happened to civility in our world?

The Knox family continues to show the world how arrogant they can be. A quality they seemed to teach their daughter. Not one mention of God or prayer in any of their requests that I've noticed just for money.

Enough already about Amanda Knox and her "problems"! Our American constitutional rights end at the US border. When one enters a foreign country one is subject to the laws and justice system of that country. There are much more serious issues in our community and the world that should be afforded news coverage. Five police officers in Western Washington were executed in a months timespan leaving behind nearly a dozen children. Our local 81st Brigade National Guard troops recently returned from Iraq. Many are in need of jobs and assistance. We have profoundly wounded warriors of our armed services returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who need of community support and assistance as well - regardless of whether we agree with the reason they were sent over there or not.

Some of the above comments are unbelievable! Innocent people are convicted ALL THE TIME! In this case, that is exactly what happened. There was no forensic evidence, pattern of similar behavior, ciminal history and testimony implicating her presented to support the verdict. A person should never be judged on their family's class/wealth, how she was raised, what she looks like, or her social behavior! The evidence DOES NOT support the prosecution's case.

Meredith was smart and pretty. Amanda was jealous and killed Meredith. The evidence we've seen presented in court in Italy proved enough-- Amanda was found guilty of murder.

This is every parent's nightmare. Sending the kid to a foreign college for higher and broader education, only to hear she's just committed a murder, in the middle of some crazy@$$ sex game... Let's take a look at the bottom line. The bottom line is...it's Amanda's fault. She ruined it. And she's the one who drained their money. Stop blaming Italian law enforcement and justice system. If you still have to blame someone, then, blame yourselves. Since this country asserts freedom in religion, I'm not going to mention religion. But I want to ask all the parents to be good, moral citizens in front of your children at all time. Teach your children about morality and be strict about it. Once again, talk is cheap. You have to show your children you're a good role model always.

Ptown and graham are "cruel"? This girl was convicted of slashing another girl's throat. Nothing "cruel" in that. eh? To be polite, this girl's behavior wasn't exactly exemplary before or after the accusations against her. It is a reasonable assumption that at the very least she was involved to some degree. In my opinion what is CRUEL is how this girl's family behaves... as if it is all about HER and not about the victim, they act as if their innocent child was simply plucked from the streets and accused with no reason. They speak of her as if she were a mental invalid, not a young adult responsible for her own bad choices and actions. I have no sympathy for these people at all. At the rate they're going they will be charged with defamation. Now THAT would be justice. Their blame "everyone else" attitude is extremely offensive.
