Kirkland killer begs jury to spare his life

SEATTLE - As KING 5 News reported, the man convicted of killing two women and two children, spoke for the first time in a Seattle courtroom, asking jurors to spare his life.

With tears in his eyes, Connor Schierman began with an apology.

"I know it's a long time coming, I know it can never be enough, but I wanted the victim's family to hear from me how sorry I am for the loss," he said.

Last month, a jury convicted Schierman of the July 2006 stabbing deaths of his neighbors Olga Milkin, her sons - 5-year-old Justin and 3-year-old Andrew - and Olga's sister, Luba Botvina.

Schierman's attorney admits his client burned the victim's Kirkland house down to hide the evidence but says he was in an alcohol-induced blackout.

"Living with the mark of a murderer, considered to be the type of person I've always loathed, somebody who takes advantage of those weaker than them," said Schierman.

There is no known motive for the case although prosecutors hinted at sexual remarks about the victims, made by Schierman just hours before the murders.

"I can't understand why this all happened. I still struggle with that," said Schierman.

On the stand, Schierman insisted he is not a monster, rather a young man who tried to live his life well despite his struggles with alcohol. He said live in prison is punishment enough for the crime.

"I have been told by people that I am going to hell. I am already there," he said.

"This was mass murder," says Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott O'Toole. He says the only appropriate sentence is death. "This was multiple, premeditated, deliberate, vicious and gruesome murder."

Schierman's defense attorney Jim Conroy asked jurors to use their "conscience" and "hearts" when deciding "whether or not t the death penalty or executing Conner is the right thing to do."

It has been a difficult journey for the Milkin family. Hearing his grandsons' murderer, brought tears to Pavel Milkin's eyes.

"It's really, really hard for me because it's my grandkids, it's my sister-in-law," he said. "It's really hard, you know. His first time, apologize for what he is doing, you know, most of the time I see his face, it's smile, it's really hard for me."

He would not say what sentence they prefer.

"It's the jury's decision right now," said Milkin.

I wonder if these people who can not support the death penalty would say this if it was their 5 & 3 year old that was killed.. Don't think so.

williskeeney2983 , your education shines through your lousy writing. No breaks for this guy. Kill him now!! Your B.S. of keeping him alive to work to pay back the family? Sorry no $$$ will replace those children or the women. At minimum UNICOR wage, in dollars per hour $0.23. cents a day comp, yeah he will be raking in the dough, so, when the dad to those kids is 80, he will have gotten a total of $168k.. WOW... $12 a day! Don't spend it all in one place dad! Let alone splitting it with the family, so half!...................................................................................... Would you accept money earned by the murderer of your family? Sorry I never could

I hope they give him the death penalty. How long do you have to wait in WA prison to be executed? I know that in some other states you wait for a while. Anyway, have him rot in prison for a few years then execute him. This freak does not deserve to live.

To anonymoususer (May 4, 2010 at 8:29 AM)_____I think, by that example, javajoe meant that none of us can speak for the victims to buy the criminal's plea, instead of giving jurisprudential definitions of murder and self-defense. Our mercy should be extremely limited for a convicted criminal because we are not the victims. I know that's my own interpretation. I am not a lawyer. I guess javajoe's point is more about morality: how the community should think, or feel, in regard to protecting the rights of the victims of a crime. I believe this moral ethos prevents or slows down the collapse of our society.

freedom - washington state death penalty they have a choice between hanging and lethal injection. When done properly, hanging is quick and painless. In a hanging, the noose is put at the throat (not behind the head) and the neck snaps killing the person instantly. Lethal injection is just like euthanizing a dog or cat and, if done properly, is quick and painless.

java - there is quite a difference between murder and self defense. ................... The guy has been convicted - he will not6 "get off" he will either be put to death after numerous appeals (automatic appeal with death penalty in this state) or he will spend his life behind bars. ...................If he was truly in an alcohol blackout, I'm not sure if I would vote for the death penalty if I was on the jury. I have no problem with the death penalty for those who know what they are doing and go out and kill people although in this case I do not know. After all, if gary ridgway (green river killer) could get life in prison / no death penalty for all the murders when he knew in advance he was going to go out and commit then it seems pretty lame to seek it when the guy did not seek to go out and kill someone.

williskeeny - you really need to proof read what you are writing before you publish it. as for this scumbag who murdered two women and two toddlers he should have the worst punishment the courts can provide. You made your bed, now go lay in it - no mercy... you didn't have any mercy on these four innocent people as you stabbed them - slit their throats and burned the house to try and cover it up. I would like the inmates to have a little jail house justice and show this guy just how much baby killers are hated inside. Let the Father decide what to do with him... it is him that will have to live without his family every day.

"I say let the Father decide his fate." (cvn65 said on May 4, 2010 at 7:22 AM)_____The father is totally out of picture. Only the victims should be counted as the providers of mercy on offenders in any crime. I kept saying the death penalty is only choice because none can interview the forever-silent victims. Thus a murderer devastates many people's lives around him, including his own beloved people. In a sense, the society gets HURT by one crime committed in the community. A crime destroys something among us even though the effect is invisible, even though most of us don't know each other. Maybe because we are still in one community in this local area.

For those that don't support the death penalty I have to ask one question. Go back in time and ask yourself, would you have used deadly force against Connor Schierman to protect the Milkin's had you been there to do so? If your answer is no you have bigger issues to deal with. Hopefully your love ones will never need you to protect them from the Connor Schierman's that are still out there. Murder is what he committed and death is what he deserves. This was a cold blooded murder of four innocent people and it was committed by Connor with his own two hands. We can not forget that he individually stabbed four loving people to death. Place yourself there for a moment and think of the horror that was experienced by this innocent family. Not an easy decision? It's the right decision. As the jury decides Connor's fait we should pray for both the Milkin family and for the Schierman family, Connor's heartless acts of murder has destroyed them both.

He did not give those poor children a choice to beg for mercy, so he shouldn't be given any. I hope the justice system does the right thing and can look past the tears and puppy dog eyes to the real killer. How can someone look upon a little child and plunge a knife? Ask him because he apparently can. He says he is in hell now? Wait until he gets to prison life.....

This guy was attempting to say he was in a drunken blackout, leaning toward criminal insanity or temp insanity. Bottom line is that this guy is a punk and he deserves to get punked in prison and see what it is like to have something you don't want to give up, taken from you! That crying thing on stage was pathetic, we all know that your only sorry when you get caught. I personally think that letting the dad take him out would be a good thing if the dad chose to do so, however because he still has his rights, thank you amendment 6 and 14 we cant do that! I say kill him and don't take long to decide that, he didn't think twice about committing his crime.

WILLIS: This forgiving stuff is ridiculous hogwash. You forgive a shoplifter, you do NOT forgive a man who killed four people and set the house on fire. Our justice system is in place, so that the penalty is a deterrent for others who would like to follow in this man's footsteps. If we pat him on the wrist and forgive him because this is his first offense, the system has no teeth and more will do the same. Four people are dead, this man needs to follow them. Forgiving is God's work, not a judge or jury.

This moron deserves the death penalty, though life imprisonment is very fitting too. This guy apologizes AFTER all this time passes, he's not sorry in the least, insulting is what it is, to say the least. An enlightened person (obviously, he's not) wouldn't harm anyone or commit a crime to begin with, a remorseful person (he's not that either) would apologize at the instant he realized his mistake, and wouldn't harm or kill anyone intentionally, a criminal/sociopath (that's what he is) on the other hand, apologizes and begs for his life, only after all of the chips are down, and only as a stall tactic, and out of fear, and nothing more, very selfish. Society doesn't need him and rejects him, therefore he should get the death penalty, and be removed period.

Whether he feels being in hell or not doesn't matter. His repentance is welcome but it cannot change the amount of the devastation that he caused. The goal is to let him pay whatever equivalent to what he broke, no more or less. Hatred or emotional retaliation cannot be the foundation of any penalty. The amount of his payment for what he arbitrarily did under his determination unfortunately went beyond the value of his life. And besides, you and I should not rob the victims of the right to declare the mercy for the offender. Such a right is only of the victims. Did you get the agreement from the victims if you may reduce the amount of the offender's IOU in their behalf? If not, I wouldn't dare do that.

His excuse still just doesn't fit, how does a man who is intoxicated to the point of "blacking out" manage to kill four people and yet be sober enough to try to hide the evidence by burning the house? He's just trying to veil the fact that he made the CHOICE to hurt those people and that he is indeed a cold blooded killer. If the court sees that they might give him the death penalty and he can't have that now can he? To those people saying that no one has the right to take his life...do you not believe in justice? Because true justice would be letting this man feel what it's like for his very existence to be at the mercy of others and for them to make the choice to forcibly extinguish his existence because they decide to. This man commited a horrible crime against society and he needs to be dealt with and made an example of. I just cannot bring myself to feel sympathy for a murderer, especially one who begs for his life instead of accepting his punishment with whatever dignity remains.

The death penalty should be the only choice. He might feel truly sorry, but what he feels today has nothing to do with what he has already destroyed. ONLY THE VICTIMS SHOULD HOLD THE RIGHT TO PROVIDE MERCY ON THEIR OFFENDER. Did they interview the victims? I don't think so. The victims are silent FOREVER. We cannot know the victims will. So, none else should change the full amount of his payment: four lives. The death penalty is the only choice and he is still in deficit.

We have the death penalty in this state, unfortunately it is not used enough even for those sentenced to death, they languish on "death row" until they ultimately die of something else. I dont know what we do with people like this character. Hopefully when his time comes he will have to answer to a higher authority and suffer a just punishment, one that fits this crime. Killing a family, that one is just so incomprehensible to normal people. I really feel if you are sentenced to death then the sentence needs to be carried out. There isnt any DNA evidence that is going to save this character. Sentenced to death then taken to the gallows.

The way I see it is that even if he gets the dealth penalty he won't make it that long to be executed. One thing that prisioners hate is a baby killer - they will have their way with this monster - jail house justice. I also agree that he can't blame a black out for this - if he was in one he wouldn't have had the concious decision to cover it up. The one and only black out I had back in College was rather embarassing and I can tell you that I couldn't have made it over to another house, did what he did and then burn it down. I hope that the family can heal.

Society and the victims' family would be better served by putting this man into their service. He should work directly to compensate the family for the loss that was inflicted on them. Killing him does nothing for the family nor for society. He is young and is able to work. I say make him work, and the proceeds of that work will directly benefit the family. Ultimately though I believe it is the familes right to decide.

Did he show mercy to those two women and two children? I could see sparing his life under one condition. Hard Labor sun-up to sun-down, no excuses,30 minutes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Six Days a week and on Sunday must conduct church service.
