SEATTLE – Washington state’s unusually high tides, often called king tides, are under way and will continue for about the next month.
The tides occur when the sun and moon’s gravitational pull reinforce one another. The Washington state Department of Ecology says the tides “offer a glimpse of how rising sea levels from global climate change could affect the state’s coastal areas.”
The dates of the king tides vary depending on your location:
Puget Sound: Dec. 27-29 and Jan. 13-17
Strait of Juan de Fuca: Dec. 21-25 and Jan. 18-22
Washington’s outer coast: Dec. 21-26 and Jan. 19-24
DOE has put together this interactive map of the dates and times.
If you have pictures of the king tides, post them in Your News or send them to us on our Facebook page or via Twitter @king5seattle.
