SEATTLE  -- Voters in King County are being asked to approve a sales tax hike and an increase in the car tab tax to prevent cuts in Metro transit bus service.

Ballots for Proposition 1 are being mailed out Wednesday. They must be returned postmarked by April 22.

If approved, the sales tax would go up a tenth of a percent to 9.6 percent in most places. The car tab tax would be set at $60 per vehicle.

The Seattle Times reports the taxes would raise about $130 million a year, with 60 percent going for bus service and 40 percent for roads. It would cost the average household about $11 a month.

If voters say no, Metro says it will need to cut bus service by 17 percent.
