The gum wall tradition in Post Alley under Pike Place Market began in 1993 when patrons of Unexpected Production’s Seattle Theatresports used gum to stick coins on the wall. Theatre workers tried to scrape the used chewing gum away, but market officials later named the wall a tourist attraction. Today, the gum covers a 50 foot stretch of the wall.
