The Grays Harbor Superior Court judge stabbed Friday was recently in the news for being part of a lawsuit against his own county over budget cuts to the court system.

The suit, filed December 22 in Thurston County Superior Court, alleged Grays Harbor County commissioners improperly interfered with the management of the court, violating the state's constitution - including breaching separation of powers provisions.

Superior Court Judge Dave Edwards told the Daily World newspaper county commissioners left he and his fellow judges no choice but to file the lawsuit.

The lawsuit seeks to overturn the budget cuts and force the county to build a new courtroom, provide more administrative staff and bolster security.

Edwards was stabbed by suspect Michael Thomas Friday at the Grays Harbor County Courthouse, and Deputy Polly Davin was shot, according to police.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
