TACOMA, Wash. -- A steady stream of visitors flow through Yong Chun Kim's Tacoma home. They come to make sure he's okay, after an ordeal that has them shaken - but not him.

"I wasn't scared," he said in broken English. "No. It's okay."

On Saturday, Mr. Kim led a group of friends on a snowshoeing trek on Mount Rainier when he fell 150 yards down a steep slope in whiteout conditions. As he tried to rejoin the group, he fell again, this time getting buried over his head in snow.

"I thought, I no want to die. But I know I will be okay," he said.

Kim, 66, is an experienced outdoorsman, but he only had the bare essentials with him on the day hike. Among them, a lighter that he used to burn his socks and scarf, along with some tree branches for warmth. By Sunday, with no sign of help on the way, he burned the only thing he could spare -- his money. It was only $6, a five and a one.

"I don't care. I have money at home," he laughed. "I had to make it home!"

Kim hunkered down beneath a tree, sat and waited.

By late Sunday, Kim's family members admit they had nearly lost all hope -- but not him. Kim stayed warm by marching in place and singing old time gospel - "Amazing Grace" - in Korean.

When search crews finally found him, some 50 hours later, Kim asked his rescuers to snap a few pictures of his latest adventure. They show him smiling as if nothing had ever gone wrong.

"They are pretty darn good," he said. "I am so thankful for them."

Kim was in such good shape paramedics didn't even send him to the hospital to be checked out.

With a song in his heart and a fire in his belly, Kim plans to return to Rainier as soon as possible, just as he has done almost every weekend for the past 10 years. He says even with the occasional brush with death - it beats golf.

"Golf is too stressful. Hard on the mind. You get angry. Stress no good!"

Kim says at the insistence of his family he will take this weekend off, but there is something about that mountain that keeps calling him back.

"It takes me close to God," he said.

I am so happy Mr. Yong Chum Kim was rescued..While his outlook on life is up lifting, it could be considered somewhat selfish..I don't find his personal satisfaction inspirational as it was at the expense of the possible loss of innocent searchers losing their life..Spirtuality bekons, call of the wild? How about self centered and total disregard for others?

Right On Mr. Kim ! You know exactly what you are talking about . . . better than Golf, or any sport for that matter. I am there with you, spirituality beckons from the mountains of Washington. It's like the call of the wild. Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier, I have a hard time choosing and I still have to head over to Mt. Adams this coming year. Here's to your wonderful outlook on life! You are an inspiration to the youngsters if not only the USA, but the world. I am not many years behind you and plan to stay young doing the same.

Yup, mountain climbing in the winter on Mt. Rainier is playing Russian Routlette. Usually, the law of averages wins out over people who claim that something dangerous keeps calling them back and they keep pressing their luck..Sooner or later, Mother Nature prevails.

Who give a rip about how this man spoke about his ordeal and be safe..I'm just happy for him and his family. Hey...read klondiko's comment..Not the only one, who is concerned about the cost of search and rescue..

Just one more thing the article was guilty of stereotyping immigrants just because they speak with a thick accent ---- "I wasn't scared," he said in broken English. Since when is that broken English?

"I no want to die."? His English isn't perfect but he clearly said, I don't want to die. "I no want to die" is what people think all immigrants talk like. I also suspect Mr. Kim didn't say, "stress no good". In any case, I'm glad for this happy ending. He's amazing.

My idea of adventure is a 5 star resort hotel on South Beach kicking back on a chase loung on white powder sand overlooking azure blue 75 degree water in Feb. while drinking daiquiris and watching the lovely gals walk by.

Better than golf? I don't think so. Hope he's paying for the search. Oh wait. He can't. Burned his $6.

I am sure Mr. Kims calm attitude helped alot with him coming out of his adventure with a smile on his face and a "fire in his heart" . The mountains this time of year, really do make you relize just how close to "God" we are at any one time. So happy for the family and his friends that all turned out so great. Better buy a Lottery ticket. Oh wait you won the lottery! You made it home!

Golf is my first choice if one gets lost, always follow the cart path back to the club house.

I was at Rainier with friends while the search was going on for Mr Kim and we heard on the way home he was found. We just hollered for joy! The rangers and volunteers at Rainier are such remarkable people and they deserve good outcomes after what they have experienced this year. And God bless Mr. Kim. I agree that Rainier takes us closer to God. But he is also very fortunate. I hope the hikers missing now will also be found safe. It is very tough in the winter up on the mt.
