State of Emergency declared in deadly ice storm

SEATTLE -- Gov. Chris Gregoire issued a State of Emergency Thursday after snow, ice and sub-freezing temperatures gripped the state. Nearly 300,000 people were left without power.

The governor's declaration means she may mobilize the National Guard.

A 60-year-old man backing his ATV out of a shed was hit by a falling tree and killed near Issaquah. King County Sheriff's deputies say the weight of snow and ice on the tree made it come down. First responders had to dodge falling branches when the arrived.

"We just got a handle of all of the collisions since [Wednesday] and now were facing a whole other issue...we're getting trees down all over the place," said Washington State Patrol trooper Guy Gill.  "We have troopers running around with chainsaws in their patrol cars cutting trees off of I-5...we probably responded to at least 10 or so trees blocking I-5 and that's just the mainline."

KING 5 meteorologist Jeff Renner said areas of freezing rain will continue up and down the Puget Sound region, eventually changing over to rain late Friday afternoon.

Friday will bring warmer weather, an increasing chance of rain and temperatures in the mid 40's with more rain forecast for the weekend. The warm up brought concerns about urban flooding. Residents are urged to check their storm drains for any clogs.

Following the record snow, some regions were hit with freezing rain, coating everything under it with a layer of ice. Sea-Tac Airport had to shut down its runways for a time. Two semi trucks crashed on iced-over freeways early Thursday morning.

Sea-Tac Airport reported that the layer of ice forced them to shut down all three runways around 5:30 a.m. They were working to de-ice them, one at a time, but several airlines were already reporting cancellations. Check your flight status

Accidents were being reported on roads across the region. Drivers were being warned to drive slowly and have an emergency kit and blanket in their cars in case they get stuck.  The Washington state Department of Transportation says that two of its workers were injured Thursday.  One worker was injured in an accident on Interstate 405 near I-5 north of Seattle when a passing car slid and hit him while he was assisting another car on the side of the road.

Another problem Thursday was trees coming down under the weight of the snow and ice, blocking roads and taking down power lines. Nearly 300,000 customers across the region, most of those with Puget Sound Energy, were without power Thursday. Some customers may not get their power back until Saturday. Power outage contact information

"It's like a storm in slow motion that keeps happening again and again," said PSE spokesman Roger Thompson.

Most garbage collection was canceled again Thursday. In most cases, sanitation companies will collect double the trash on the next collection day.

Snow accumulations varied Wednesday, with the South Sound getting hit the hardest. Olympia received a foot of snow, while parts of Lewis County got 17 inches.

The Washington State Patrol said Wednesday that it had responded to over 2,300 collisions on Washington roads as of 9 a.m. Thursday.  In Pierce and Thurston counties alone there were over 400 accidents.

"I saw a guy in my rear mirror," said Gill. "I saw headlights and taillights and headlights and taillights again as he spun around off the road."

Most school districts, including Seattle, closed schools Thursday. Check out our full list of school closures and delays in the region.

Transit agencies had most of their buses on snow routes. Many buses on Wednesday got stuck trying to go up and down hills. If you need to catch a bus on Thursday and your stop is on a hill, your best bet is to go to the top or bottom of the hill. In addition, Light Rail and Sounder commuter trains were running late due to mechanical issues related to the cold.

Check your routes: Sound Transit; Metro Transit; Pierce Transit; Community Transit

According to KING 5 meteorologists Jeff Renner and Lisa Van Cise, between 1.8 inches to 17 inches of new snow accumulations were recorded around the Puget Sound region Wednesday. Here are some of the totals, sorted by county:

  • Island:  Coveland 7.5", Langley 7.1", Camano Island 6", Coupeville 4.5", Oak Harbor 4"
  • King County: Kent 9.8", Federal Way 5.5", Woodinville 5" Issaquah 4.3", Sea-Tac 4.2", Shoreline 3", Bellevue 2", Seattle 2"
  • Kitsap:  Olalla 5", Poulsbo 4"
  • Lewis: Chehalis 17", Winlock 16"
  • Mason: Shelton 11", Belfair 7.5"
  • Pierce: Orting 8", Tacoma 7.5", Puyallup 6", Parkland 4.8"
  • Thurston: Grand Mound 15", Olympia 14", Lacey 13", Yelm 12"
  • San Juan: Mount Constitution 9", Friday Harbor 6.5", Lopez Island 1.5"
  • Skagit: La Conner 5", Convrete 3.6", Anacortes 3.5", Mount Vernon 2.5"
  • Snohomish: Lake Stevens 9", Stanwood 8.7", Lynnwood 5.5"
  • Whatcom: Bellingham 1.8"

KING 5 viewers shared their photos of how much new snow they received in their backyard.

@hawksfaninsocal... Remind us of that when it's 105F there with 60 MPH Santa Ana winds and wildfire is coming down the hillside at your home... There are costs to living anywhere. on a less serious note... GO SEAHAWKS!

This is classic. Reading all these posts with people freaking out, I remember those days up there in the great Pac NW. Down here in SoCal? Its a lovely 65 and sunny. I don't miss that nasty weather up there one bit.

I have seen and heard from every city around Puget Sound except on and that is my city of Burien. Why won't the news cover Burien? We have a major highway, 509, that runs north and south but they NEVER mention it. Why? Are we not rich like all the other neighborhoods you cover? Issaquah, Bellevue, Redmond, Shoreline and even Kent. But what about Rainier Valley? Sea-Tac? Burien? We do exist!

yeah - shadedmuse is another fool from "real snow country". I've driven montana snow and it's easy. Washington snow is harder on so many levels. Our snow is either inches of slush to slide around (since it's so wet here and not a dry snow) or else the temperature drops and it is immediately black ice. No powder. no compact snow or ice. no nice stormdrains when it melts. no nice snowbank to protect you from going straight into the ditch. no elevated snow markers on freeway exits. often no barriers. no snow plows coming by every 10 minutes. no barriers against snowdrifts. no trucks splashing waves of slush onto your windshield. I've had the luxury of snowstorm driving in montana. it was cake.

Why don't we all just say thank you for to the officer/fire department/emt/dot crews/news crew/weather people/ everyone... who have worked countless hours to help people like us. They could be home with their families and loved ones yet they are out risking their life's for ours!! Just say thank you and stop complaining!

I can't believe how the snow plows and graveling/deicer is so far and few between. Perhaps DOT and local cities need to get some help and ideas from like Salt Lake Utah that has every plow working 24 hours to clear streets so people can get to work.

Hey Weather Wizards, no one believes your forecasts anymore. It was supposed to be mid-40s and raining today. Last I checked, freezing rain doesn't occur at 45 degrees. Why should we believe you when you say it'll be better tomorrow? At least you're not as bad as Rebecca Stevenson, whom we all know was hired for reasons having NOTHING to do with her weather acumen.

epicure43, You must be new to the area! We have gotten much better forecasting this year than ever before. The trouble is weather doesn't play by your rules! shadedmuse, being from Montana I can understand your distain of the urban dweller of the Puget Sound area. I spent four years living on Mt. Hood, and often feel frustration with the drivers here in Seattle when it snows. An example; my wife is driving to work this morning, glare ice! So what happens, some "individual", who is in a big hurry, tailgates her DOWN the hill. By the way she is driving a Subaru with All Wheel Drive and ABS Brakes, and is going slow for a reason. Finally, the "person" gets by her. My experience is when I see someone driving this way, I let them by and expect to see them in the ditch down the road. All that said, while you have very good experience, that does not excuse being RUDE!

the $64,000 question is, with all of the weather technology equipment to the forecasters... how is a huge deadly storm like this not better predicted? I vividly recall hearing on the news cast last night, the worst part of the storm was declared. Only to find out this morning the storm only had just begun, freezing rain!!! Bringing trees down everywhere and the winds haven't even shown up yet.

shadedmuse is another prime example of the "populist" OWS/AdBuster Apple Notebook using community. They're never concerned with others, just their little world of "it's not fair". Shows the true colors of Populists...and their failed movement. And like all failed movements, what they tried to purge is held within themselves, and are still full of doo.

It's now 2:41 p.m. and has been snowing on Mercer Island for about 1.5 hours. This means it's warming up. However I just saw the weather report and they are saying more snow and freezing rain until 4 a.m. Friday! There is a power line drooping and looks like it is going to snap. We have trees littering our backyards and front yards. We have not lost power yet, I hope we don't - where would we go?

It is still snowing in Marysville, at this hour on Thursday. We are still snowed in. None of the delivery trucks have been able to go into our residential area. I don't see school being held tomorrow here, unless everything stops and warms up, like right now.

On Wednesday of this week the local station reported a total of 25" in the area south of Olympia but said the areas north of Seattle were to get 1" - 3" total. I have been home all week because of the snow no work, my front yard has over 12", I have shoveled my driveway in case of emergency to go out 4 times if I do it today: day 1 sunday 4", day 2 Tuesday 3", day 3 Wednesday 5", day 4 Thursday as right now 6" it has been snowing since 5 am small flakes but it mounts up. The roads are F BUT THE STATE IS DOING A GOOD JOB THATS A JOKE, they cannot even maintain the roads when the roads are dry. You people in the East need to come to Washington during our snow season and See if you ( eastern) can stay out of the ditch after coming of a HILL, I would be surprized. So button it, flat roads are easy, hills are not.

shadedmuse - just because there is only a dusting in downtown Seattle does not mean that other areas on the western half aren't experiencing different conditions. I have over a foot of snow at my house, with freezing rain on top of that. That means downed trees and power lines, massive power outages and very cold temperatures for many. The world does not revolve around Seattleites and many are having extreme conditions.

So when this happens they are the ones on You Tube and News Videos spinning out and being stupid on Seattle Hills.
