SEATTLE – Dozens of people blocked streets in Downtown Seattle Wednesday afternoon, calling for immigration reform before Seattle Police ended the demonstration by making more than 20 arrests.

Thousands of commuters were stuck in gridlock which snaked throughout downtown after protesters moved into the middle of Second Avenue.

Many are wondering why it took so long for police to clear the streets. Police say it just took time to get enough people and equipment in place to handle the situation safely.

Dozens of intersections were sealed off as traffic backed up from the Federal Building all the way to Belltown.

"Its very frustrating," said one driver who said it took 40 minutes to move one block.

"I support their cause, but I want to be home," said another.

By 6 p.m., most of the crowd had left, but about 20 remained in the intersection, determined to be arrested.

"America is better than this," said Pramila Jaypal as she was about to be handcuffed. "We need to be willing to stand up for families that are being separated across the country."

Jaypal is Executive Director of the group One America.

One by one, Seattle Police was arresting the remaining protesters who were escorted off the intersection peacefully.

The rally started as a planned event led by local social justice and labor groups to voice frustration over the slow pace of immigration reform, and to protest Arizona's tough new crackdown on undocumented workers. This is the second major immigration rally to block downtown Seattle streets in just over a month.

"The fear in the immigrant community has increased. It is time for the federal government to do something about our broken immigration system," said protester David Ayala.

@latina - immigrant parents are completely responsible for their children. Just as American parents are completely responsible for their children. To imply that they are victims of America is ridiculous. It's not our fault immigrants bring their children into this mess. It's their problem and the problem of the country of which the ARE citizens. Open your eyes and look at how unfair the world is! Even to American citizens! Yes, there are many of Americans suffering. You seem to care more about the plight of illegal immigrants than you do with Americans themselves. Do you think we all have bounty to just give away? Everyone comes here believing in the hollywood myth that everyone here is rich. We all MUST agree to abide by rules. The alternative to abiding by the rules is anarchy. Do you believe the U.S. is a country where rules don't matter, where everyone takes what they want and does as they please? Where no one listens to the courts, legislature, local gov?

All of you who just talk about how "illegals" are bad to this country, i want to tell you something, some of those "illegals" didn't choose to be, they came when they were little without knowing that they were going to break a rule, they go to school here and work because that's the only place they know, and if you say "well why they don't try to become legal" believe me the naturalization process is not the easiest one if it would it be easy there wouldn't be people hidding or scare because they are going to get caught, i honestly think that the only way to solve this is by a immigration reform that will only allow people who have pay taxes, don't have criminal issues and SPEAK ENGLISH!! the opportunity to thank this country the right way, there is a lot of legal citizens ( the children of the "illegals" ) depending on their parents to do the right thing, but the goverment has to do their part , they are the future of this country and they are LEGAL and nobody can't change that...

You know what we really need to do is take the names and information of all you LEGAL supports and have our government pass a law that stating all financial burden your oh so perfect illegal immigrants put on this country should come from your taxes not mine. I'm sure you'd coming running to sign up for that wouldn't you!!!!

I understand why some Americans believe it's their right to give away their opportunities and share their rights with illegal immigrants. However, it's not. And it certainly isn't their privilege to tell me that I must. Because I won't. Americans don't have the right to give away each others' job opportunities, security, or any other American right or privilege to those that are not here legally. Some people call this racist. It is not. I do not support any illegal regardless of where they are from. So, to those that want to give away my priveleges to those that compete with me illegally, I have a 2 questions. 1 - Do you support all illegal immigrants regardless of the country of origin? and 2 - Will you give all of your money, including your job, to a person residing here illegally? That would be right now? Today? Go quit your job in the name of immigrants! Cash out your 401K and stock and give it away to immigrants. Go ahead and then come lecture me.

Does an illegal that loses a job get unemployment? I do not get unemployment and have been out of work for a few years. It's hard to 'qualify' for unemployment for most americans. There are so many loopholes employers use to deny you. But I wonder. Do you have to prove legal residence or citizenship to qualify for unemployment?

This illegal’s, gangs, and drug thing is so far out of control that the local police, and civilians are losing in so many ways. I think the only way to get a handle on this and bring this country back, is to activate the National Guard to patrol the borders and even go so far as to proclaim a state of Marshal law until we get this country back under control. We have the laws, we just need the power to enforce them. We need to know before election who stands for what, and if elected, that they do as promise and not turn into a #@*@ politician who are more about themselves and or their special interest groups then they are about their country. May some day soon we will not have to push 1 for English. Oh alright I’ll get off of my soap box. NEXT!

The people in this demonstration probably did include a few illegals, however those that participated in the middle of the street in Seattle are basically of the mostly White Seattle one world, 1 people elitist hippy philosphy and beleif system, that states we can all be happy if we just embrace our diversity and remove all borders. Nice idea but its so much bull. We need to round up all illegals and deport them. They are here for the money and the power. They do not care about American culture, just their own self interests. They will not stop untill they take over the US completely, then see if they show us the same respect they want.. The border as it is now is just a joke. If you are not going to stop the illegals from pouring in, then just invade Mexico, take over their Country, install a puppet government and make them all American citizens. Then we can have a real never ending war against drug cartels, insurgents etc. in the mean time, no housing, no social services, no jobs

If these protesters (terrorists) are illegals, then deport them immedatly. No amnesty, no welfare, no healthcare - just deport them. If they are legal citizens then put them in jail for breaking the law. It is the law and it is simple. California is bankrupt because of the illegals are leaching off the system and it is happening to Washington State.

Please inform us how allowing 20 million illegals in our country is a good thing. Tell us why it should be ok for employers to hire illegals and please don't try and argue that American citizens will not do these jobe. We deed them less then 20 years ago. Plenty of people are unemployed. But..Oh wait. We have house payments and health care to pay. I guess we cannot afford to work at substandard slave wages at the same jobs that use to pay more no less the 15 years ago. Americans are not use to a third world life style and should we? We are not the third world....so I have been told.

Wow, there are a lot of misinformed, angry people in Seattle, and they seem to flock to these comment boards in disproportionate numbers to let off their steam. Don't you realize that the inconvenience to you was a very small, insignificant price to pay for the widespread (and deserved) media coverage that this protest received? It is obvious from your belligerent (and subtly racist) comments that your hearts will not be won over for the cause; but you were not the target! The millions of people who heard about it who were not stuck in traffic were the target. And whether you like it or not, THEY HEARD THE MESSAGE. Mission accomplished...

Lock these worthless bums up. Better yet, send them to Mexico where these ignorant, morons can protest ther illegal immigration process. Actually illegals in Mexico have no due process. They are either beat, murdered, thrown into the worst of conditions of a prison or thrown back into El Salvador where a majority of the illegals cross from going into Mexico. My point is the US treats their illegals like kings compared to other countries but explaining this to the ignorant, uneducated, stupid protesters is like talking to a brick wall.

I'm tired of hearing they are seperating families, illegals did that to themselves by coming here illegally and then having a baby and thinking because their child is legal they should be too, well BULL., we may have to accept; that the child is legal but the parents are not and need to be removed from US soil, it so simple!

The rest were caucasion. The message they were fighting for was not clear. "Immigration Reform" means different things to different people. They were just taking up space and wasting people's time.

A civil class action lawsuit should be brought against all the arrested parties for time, financial, and material losses of the affected businesses and commuters? The number of affected commuters (10,000 - 50,000) times the time loss (3 hours) times an average wage (10 - 30 dollars per hour) = $300,000 - $4,500,000 plus material losses plus punitive damages.

Umm, actually the REAL story IS about traffic, that's the NEWS part. Immigration protests have been going on for decades, usually stopping when millions of line-cutters get amnesty, like during the Reagan years. The immigrant community all around me wasn't represented very well in that rally - but these folks all waited in line to get authorization in their home countries. Like I did. All =anyone= is going to recall about today's' rally is that a sympathetic city had it's traffic shut down by people whose message is now "we can anything we want in pursuit of our cause" Good luck with that.Try that during a game day.

Watch Arizona's case carefully. After California got trashed and made unlivable, the border crashers headed to Texas and Arizona. The costs to manage this problem in Arizona has gotten so out of hand, that it appears now that Arizona will be the next big bankrupt state. Don't buy any Arizona bonds! The default will wipe you out! After Arizona tilts, Washington is next. Oregon is in the mix, too. Texas may take a while... and they really like the cheap labor there.

This is a victory for the Democrats running the show and the sympathetic church groups who want to undermine our society. It's time to pull the plug on this administration before they bankrupt us like what happened in California. We are going down the same path to destruction. Look for any political party that says they want to end illegal immigration and vote for them. So far the Democrats and Republicans have been a big disappointment. Vote the bums out! They work hard at finding an "anchor mama" because kids really complicate things and they get free entitlement money. They work hard at buying a car and driving it without insurance. They work hard at running away from the scene of an accident. They work hard at calling anyone's objections, racism. They work hard to enlist the help of sympathetic churches who try to overcome society's laws. They work hard at imposing their culture, values and language on someone else's country. Just go to Queen Ann hill (or any Seattle neighborhood) and hear all the construction trucks blaring mariachi music. Go to the fast food restaurants. You will see why there is a lot of resistance to sending the illegals home. They don't want to pay a living wage to a American citizens. tootoo you state that the constitution clearly states “ when you are born in the United States, you are subject to the jurisdiction of it.” When it actually states “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, AND subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” There is a difference between that and what you state. Further, if you do a little research you will find that the 14th amendment was not created to allow “Anchor Babies,” it was created to ensure that former slaves were citizens of the U.S.

I am in Arizona, and I have to admit the illegal problem in the Seattle area is nothing like we have here. I am a native of Arizona and have dealt with this all my life. I am proud that we passed the law that allows our City/County police to take them off the streets. I fully support the law. If they want to remain here, they should do so legally. It would be that way if we wanted to become a citizen of their country. So why such the fuss??!? I cannot comprehend how they think it is wrong of us to do in OUR country, when they are doing the same in theirs!!!

@jerrysorensen: you neocons are the reason we have the Patriot Act. You take the constitution, twist it to your advantage and create "unlawful" laws. It clearly states that when you are born in the United States, you are subject to the jurisdiction of it. By deporting so called "anchor babies," we are violating the constitution. I don't understand why neocons call it "wanting to fight illegal immigration" and not pure and simple racism? They did it with the Germans, Chinese, blacks, Irish, Jews and many more. Just because the ethnicity changes, it's still racism, pure and simple. As long as your hero Rand Paul is ok with racism why can't you all just stop hiding it?

Incredible. Presidente Calderon insults America by "complaining" about our human rights violations regarding Mexican ILLEGALS, while Mexico imprisons anyone coming there illegally from Guatemala, or Honduras. - - - - - - - Presidente Calderon insults America by insisting that we "accept" all of their Illegals, because he doesn't want them there. - - - - - - - Presidente Calderon insults America by suggesting that we will engage in racial profiling, which they do in Mexico every day of the week.- - - - - - - And our own citizens (ARE THEY?) protest AZ's law, and insist on Amnesty, while their own country PUTS ILLEGALS IN PRISON. May the Protesters please move to MEXICO, and Mexico please F-Off.

It's bad enough when illegals block our streets, but what's up with these obvious "church freaks" joining in to make things worse? This is more about politics than religion. When did religion approve of breaking the law? That's not in my bible. If church groups want to get involved in this matter, I'm all for it! We can eliminate their tax exempt status since they are political organizations and expose them for what they really are, political action committees. The increased tax revenue can be used for increased border security. Not the phony Obama National Guard who is instructed not to engage the illegals crossing our borders. Hey Arizona... count me in! Vote for change? Not happy? Change your vote!

We have to quit blaming "anchor babies" for illegal immigration. These children didn't ask to get caught up in this garbage. The real problem is "anchor mamas" who give themselves up to illegal immigrants and then cry the blues when their family gets separated because of immigration status. Maybe that needs to be illegal with a mandatory five year sentence in a prison for women. Put the "anchor mamas" in prison and deport the rest of the family to whatever country they came from. I feel sorry for legal Mexican immigrants who are no doubt being abused because of this failure of government to enforce the law. So far, both Bush and Obama have been woeful failures at addressing this problem. We need a new political party with brains and backbone. We need real change not short change.

Is this really an Immigration Reform march or a March for support of illegal hispanic immigrants? Each word is chosen carefully. It's not a march to support upholding or fixing our immigration laws to prevent illegal immigration, it is not a march to support illegal immigrants from Canada or any nation not of hispanic origin, and it's not a march to prevent legal immigration or make legal immigration illegal. So it's not about 'reform' so much as it's about making allowances for illegal hispanic immigrants. I'm not the racist. They are.

The 14th Amendment of the Bill of rights says that “All persons born in the United Stated, and subject to the Jurisdiction thereof are citizens.” What do we mean by ‘complete jurisdiction thereof?’ It means NOT OWING ALLEGIANCE TO ANYBODY ELSE. So if you are from other country, your allegiance is to that country until you have gain citizenship to other country. That means what is now called anchor babies are in fact not a U.S. citizen unless the father, if living, or otherwise, whose mother was a citizen at the time of their birth. This Amendment was put in place on the most part to provide citizenship to the slaves of that period of time. So the 14th amendment has nothing to do with Illegal’s so try to make into something it’s not.

Arrest them all, find out their legal status, and deport every illegal along with all their minor children whether they're "anchor babies" or not. These protests should be illegal -- illegal aliens should have no rights. Tolerating them is unconscionable. Tolerating them while they obstruct the passage of American citizens is beyond ridiculous. Our country is being taken over by these illegals with the unconstitutional consent and encouragement of our government.

Duh! Selective enforcement of the law causes serious bad feelings in a community. The law needs to be applied equally and fairly to all. This sort of thing really disgusts me. Has Seattle gone completely loony tunes? If I was in city government, I'd be embarrassed by this fiasco. Lawyers are going to tear Seattle up! Be careful who you vote for, Seattle!

I want immigration reform alright - I want the U.S. to enforce existing immigration laws! I want our borders secured and I expect the U.S. government to use force, if necessary, to do it. And if the U.S. government refuses, then I would support a law, similar to the one in AZ, for Washington state. If immigrants want to re-locate to the U.S., do so LEGALLY. If not, send them back to their country of origin, along with their 'anchor babies'. Fine and/or punish any and all businesses found to be hiring illegals. It is against the law to hire an illegal! Let's start abiding by our own laws and punishing those who refuse.

I have no issues with people legally entering our country so what is so confusing about illegal is illegal? Remeber the terrorist that flew those planes into the towers, the Pentagon and into Shanksville PA? They were here illegally.

Acts like this are a waist of time. Blocking an intersection doesnt help any cause. Besides immigration reform should be tighter borders and more laws like in AZ. What they want is open borders that allow anyone to come across and stay. We have enough illegals. We dont need anymore at ALL! It costs to much money to support them. When we have to pay for there medical and other benifits. When we shouldnt have to pay for them at all since they dont contribute to any tax base.
