"What happened to those coin-operated, automatic toilets that Seattle installed and then removed? Are they in use in another city?"

David

Bellevue

Yes they are, David. Actually, they were free to the public. But before we tell you where they ended up, here's a little history lesson for those new to this story.

They were supposed to be a nice, clean place for visitors and the homeless to do their business. But Seattle's five automated, self-cleaning toilets became a haven for drug deals, drug and alcohol use and prostitution.

The experiment started in 2004 for $5 million. It ended in 2008 with an online auction to get rid of them. The city put a minimum bid of $89,000 each on eBay.

No one stepped up to the plate. The city revised its strategy in hopes of sparking a bidding free-for-all.

Unfortunately for the city, one of the toilets sold for $4,899. The others went for much less. The average selling price for all of the toilets was about $2,510 each.

Rochester, Wash.-based Racecar Supply bought all five toilets. At the time, owner Butch Behn said he planned to use two of the units at the South Sound Speedway in Rochester and sell the other three. But Behn tells us now that he hasn't sold any of them.

In the end, the $5 million investment netted about a $10,000 return for the City of Seattle after the company that held the auction took its cut.

Are these the same types of toilets that were taken out of New York City, years ago, because they were not handicapped-accessible? If so, didn't the story about them air on 60 minutes or 20/20? They seemed great, and over time, perhaps well worth the price, especially if the city has a lot of tourist activity? It seems a shame that this didn't work out. I don't know where they were located, but right outside a bank or most visible downtown location might have been a better choice. It really seems that location (NOT next to a city/state park; as I said, I don't know where they were located) would be quite important, and the manufacturer might have had some suggestions for this, if drug use or prostitution were a predictable situation. Too bad.

I'm sure mayor mcchuckles pocketed a fair bit of it. This is government money laundering of tax dollars (like the idiotic viaduct replacement tunnel)

Who were the advocates for the original purchase of these toilets? I want to make sure they are not in office now and/or will be voted out of office soon. The whole episode---drug use and prostitution----was so predictable. I can't hep but think that the politicians that sponsored this purchase gained financially in the deal. They can't be THAT stupid can they? I guess they can.

Are the Seattle City officials that made this horribly bad decision still working for the tax paying citizens?? I wish our city, state, and any government would just use there heads, the one on their neck before they spend tax payers dollars on such useless, stupid items.

I was at South Sound Speedway recently. The toilets are not free to the public, you have to buy a pit pass $40.00 to get into the pit area where they are located, unless you wait until after the races, then during a short time, they allow fans to go into the pits to talk to drivers and look at cars up close. I noticed there were padlocks and closed signs on the two near the concession stand. I asked, the story I got was that they were installed without the proper permits and inspections, and when all was said and done, a final inspection was done. Supposedly they passed, then someone came out and told MR. Behn that they had to be moved because they were too close to the well. So they remain under lock down and have been for over a year. Money well spent? I wonder. Now, Mr. Behn, thinking he was getting an awesome deal, has to spend a lot more to move them for them to be used. Hmmmm. Sounds to me like they have been a BAD investment from the beginning! Must have bad karma.

Why weren't we a bit more creative in our problem solving with this situation? Could we have placed these services in a location where they could've been used rather than abused? I was thinking that Woodland Park Zoo (or other similar location) might've been a good option. You have to pay to get in which would cut out much of the drug/prostitution issues. I understand the "cut your losses" concept but I think that applies much better to a few hundred bucks than to more than a million.

You mean the dirtbags that bought the stupid things or the dirtbags that used (and abused) them?

This wasn't a failure of the toilets....it was a failure to run the dirtbags out of downtown.

This just demonstrates how much thought goes into major decisions by the City Of Seattle. Next thing you know they'll be, oh I don't know, boycotting Arizona for enforcing a FEDERAL LAW ALREADY IN PLACE to keep illegal aliens out of the country.........Oh wait.....never mind.

The City of Seattle's "Toiletgate" is more proof positive of the ignorance and naivete of Seattle's lawmakers.

Good example of how smart Seattle politicians and "do gooders" are. Most of the pre-purchase nay-sayers, like myself, warned and predicted the outcome before throwing $4.99mil down the literal toilet. But all the pie in the sky, light rail building, bright-water funding, 520 rebuilding supporters said yes. Well there you go.
