SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. – Six men who were not wearing seat belts were thrown from their minivan as it rolled over on Interstate 90 Monday, killing the driver.
It happened about 4:10 p.m. at milepost 42 just west of Snoqualmie Pass.
The Washington State Patrol says all six men, ranging from 19 to 47 years of age, were thrown from the 1993 Mercury Villager. The driver died at the scene. Two other men were airlifted in critical condition.
"It's really a shame," said Trooper Jason Greer, "We try really aggressively to make sure people wear their seatbelts properly. In this case, all six were not. All six were ejected out of the vehicle."
Troopers say there is no sign of alcohol, but by the skid marks left on the road, it appears speed was a factor.
I-90 westbound was closed for just over an hour.
Troopers say the driver was a 47-year-old Seattle man. Three of the survivors were also from Seattle, one from Spokane, and one from Kent. Police say all the men appear to be of Somalian descent.
