Interstate 5 construction and several big events will make driving into Seattle tough this weekend.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says contractor crews will close all but one lane of the northbound I-5 collector-distributor between I-90 and Madison Street in order to replace worn expansion joints. The closure will go from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

The collector-distributor runs parallel to I-5 and is used to merge drivers from I-90 and provides exits to downtown Seattle, but drivers often use it as another lane if the mainline is backed up.

KING 5 traffic reporter Tracy Taylor says people driving into Seattle from the eastside on I-90 will also be affected, so they should add extra time to their commutes.

Alternate routes from I-5 include the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Airport Way S., 1st Avenue S. and 4th Avenue S.

Three big events are happening this weekend in Seattle. The Seattle Sounders FC opens its MLS season at noon Saturday. The Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament continues through Sunday at KeyArena and the Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show is at the CenturyLink Field Events Center Saturday and Sunday.
