OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. -- The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office identified a man killed Monday while out hunting for grouse.

Deputies said Michael R. Carrigan, 52, of Hoquiam, was shot and killed near Pontiac Ridge.

Authorities said Carrigan got out of a car to shoot at a grouse in a tree near the side of the road.  His passenger, George Stover, 65, said Carrigan missed his first shot and took one more.  It was then he heard another gunshot from somewhere else.

Stover, who was still sitting in the vehicle, said he saw Carrigan turn around and could see blood on him.  Stover said Carrigan then fell down and at that time, Stover said he heard another gunshot.  Stover then drove out of the area to call for help.

Authorities arrived that night and found Carrigan dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.

Two occupants, from a residence 100 yards away, were interviewed by police and several items were collected from the home.  So far, no arrests have been made but authorities do have persons of interest.

An autopsy for Carrigan was scheduled for Wednesday.
