ARLINGTON, Wash. – Hundreds of people are showing up at a hiring center for new Walmart Supercenter set to open at Smokey Point in Arlington later this year.

The 154,000-square-foot store promises 350 position, most of them full-time.

"We've had more than 500 applicants," says Store Manager Leon White. "Our goal is to hire employees from the Arlington area. These are the folks who have waited 6 months for this store to go in."

The hiring rush highlights the continued need for jobs in the region. Nationally, the unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months. Weak hiring by private employers wasn't enough to keep pace with the number of people looking for work.
Overall, the economy lost 54,000 jobs. The jobless rate rose 0.1 percent to 9.6 percent last month according to the U.S. Labor Department.

"It's been a long year," says Shana Britton. She was just hired to work as a sales associate at the new Walmart. "It's tough not being able to feed your kids because you're have no job. This came just at the right time."

Walmart says it has no opening date but is expected to be in operation in late October.

But while the retailer brings hundreds of much needed jobs to the community, there are many that worry what the box store will do the community. Tony Gutierrez, owner of Gutierrez Family Chiropractic about a block from the store, is worried about the impact on traffic.

"It is going to be a nightmare," he says. "It's already backed up now. I already have no parking for my patients."

The City of Arlington is working to expand the roadway in front of Walmart. The retailer is also constructing a large parking lot.

Blah blah blah Walmart is not the enemy. And it's not the bad employer that some make it out to be. Some store directors have made things bad at some stores but a complaint to the company itself gets that fixed. Jobs are too scare right now to nitpick. The downfall of this country is the lack of and bad education that kids are getting in school. I knew more in sixth grade than high school seniors are graduating with today. Hooked on phonics and new math was the beginning of the downward spiral.

@ryanduh, just an after thought, are you aware that wallmart puts out of business every mom&pop hardware, fish&tackle, small grocery, nursery, sporting goods and restraunt within50 miles? Is this the America you want?

@ryanduh, I am confident that you have your familys best intrest at heart, and quite confident that your children will be able to fend for themselves, but we have a responsibility to advance the cause of the common labor worker,... the welder, the assembler. the maker of things. We are not so far apart... we want a better time. I am not blaming everyyone other than myself, but our lawmakers have let all of the moneyed intrests off the hook, especially the repubs. We have to realize this, or our children will suffer. What is wrong in letting the tax rates return to clinton-era rates? We did fine then, when the wealthy returned their capital into building their business......rather than putting their money in their savings. bushes lower tax rates did not create jobs except overseas.

rnl52, I am not happy with the direction of this country, I am sick a tired of all you people blaming anything and anyone but yourself. Corporations can do wrong and do wrong, I'm pretty sure I didn't state that they could do no wrong. You are blaming Wal-Mart and other like corporations for the down fall of this country, when it is you and I and our fellow Americans who shop at and do business with them and allow them to stay in business. I have no problem taking responsibility for my actions and mistakes and I don't let them affect anyone other than myself. But I can guarantee that my children will know how to work, and how provide for themselves and know how to "Man up" when it's time for them too.

@ryanduh, if you are satisfied with the trajectory of the country, and you are happy with what you are leaving for your children.......I guess you will have to tell them to "man up" or "women up" .....if we go with your 'corporations can do no wrong' mantra, I'm sure they will appreciate your "advice". They will also wonder why you chose to not fight to make the corporations pay their fair share, and left the debt to them. You can tell them that you were misled by faux nuze, and faux told you that two wars put on the Chinese credit card was good for America, and now they have to pay, because you didn't question.

@rnl52, I am plenty capable of taking responsibility for myself and I have no desire to pawn that off onto some corporation, that's my job. Last time I checked we live in a free country and you can spend your money any way you like and at any store you like. If you don't agree with the policy of the corporation then don't spend your money there. Obviously your American way is much different than mine, I choose to do what is right for myself, my neighbors and my country, you complain and say it's someone else’s fault. Man up and be an American.

@ryanduh, Will $7.85/hr. with no benefits feed the family and pay the bills? Maybe hot dogs and the bills on a 20" single wide. Is this the new America?

@ryanduh, whats killing this country is that good 'ol American companies don't feel any responsibility to their citizens anymore. They have access to the largest(for now) consumer market in the world, they sell out their workers to overseas manufacturing that pays $3.00/day then they run their profits through the Bahamas and don't even pay taxes. Exxon made 35 billion dollars last year and I paid more taxes than they did. Whats going on here is corporate treason. Don't give me that "man up" stuff.....and this is not the American way, at least it shouldn't be. If the trend continues, we will all be working for $3.00/day with no benefits. Ain't it great that here in America you can get sick and lose your house.

Why do so many people have a problem with working at a job that will feed the family and pay the bills? The people who think or say they would never work this kind of job or that kind of job is what is killing this country. Man up and do what you need to be done to make it work, that's the American way.

@eightwrong, I agree with you. I just lament what has happened to our country, and the fact that we don't manufacture much anymore.....now the white collar and professional jobs are going (H1B visas). All I am saying is that we had better give some thought as to where we are going as a country.

@rnl52 and silverton; jamesarmy has a good point. People who have jobs don't care about what a blessing Wal-mart is. I'm guessing you have good jobs too. Get a grip. If it wasn't badly needed, there wouldn't be a line. Regardless of the kind of job, the future of the country or what we've been reduced to--right here and now, this is needed. I need to feed my kids too, and given the choice between watching them go hungry and wearing a blue smock, I'd rather wear a blue smock, too.

@silverton, you are right...labor is now a dirty word. We are a 'service' economy now. Your friend that worked at Bayliner could feed his family and take vacations, and despite the cheap labor in Mexico...I bet the price of Bayliners is no cheaper than it was when they were made here. This is the new normal thanks to 'free trade'. America is done.

Wow! What fantastic jobs!!!! Boy, you can sure tell that the economy is turning around. Long hours, next to no benefits, forced overtime. Welcome to the future of America. I knew a guy who used to work at the Bayliner factory in Arlington making 40 thousand a year. They closed the plant over 2 years ago and moved it to Mexico. Who cares! We now have another walmart to sell us cheap throw away plastic goods from China. This Country is Finished.

Wow! Regardless of who is moving into this city, they are adding jobs. It sounds to me like this Chiropractor could really care less about that. Why would he? He has a job. It seems to me that all he cares about is money in his own pocket and not for the greater good of this wonderful community. Parking Spaces.. Really? Some people have bigger things to worry about. Hats off to you Arlington Wal-mart. J. Army
