REDMOND, Wash. - A Bellevue grandmother was all smiles today after the Value Village in Redmond found the rings she had mistakenly donated to a local charity ten days ago.

KING 5 was there when the Value Village manager presented the rings to Gladys Bergstrom.

Bergstrom hugged the manager and told her it restores her faith in people.

"I couldn't believe they found them," Bergstrom said. "I was sure they were gone."

It was 1942 when Gladys married her husband Marvin. World War II was raging so there was no fancy wedding. But on their 40th anniversary, Marvin surprised her with a ring laden with diamonds - more than one and a half carats worth.

After 67 years of marriage, Marvin died last year and Bergstrom worried about someone stealing that ring and several others she'd received over the years from friends and family. So, she put them in a small bag and hid it in a shoe.

Last week, Bergstrom made a big mistake when she put her charitable donations out on the porch for collection. She mistakenly included her white Easy Spirit shoes with some others.

When she realized what had happened, Bergstrom and her daughter rushed to Value Village where her donations had ended up.

Some of her shoes were there, but not the Easy Spirits.

Then, however, a sorter who works in the back warehouse of Value Village told KING 5 he was going through a black plastic bag full of clothes when he saw a little red mesh bag that matched the description of the one that Bergstrom had reported missing with the rings inside.

Jose Flores-Hurtado said he was surprised and happy when he realized what he had found.

Gladys had offered a reward for the return of her rings. Value Village says it will not accept the reward.

tresbjbenet, I am big enough to say when I have been wrong, but you continue to spew your dribble and reinforce what the rest of the community knows.

It's nice to know there are still honest people in this world. It doesn't always turn out that way. I'm hoping Mrs. Bergstrom will rent a safe deposit box for her valuables. It's not very prudent to keep those kind of valuables in ones home.

I'm so glad she got her rings back, and many props to the worker that found the bag, thought it was suspicious and brought it to his manager. I'm esp glad she got back her 40th anniversary ring, esp since her husband passed away last year. Yea!!

I'm glad that we are finally seeing a happy ending in all of the tragedy that we have been having in Washington, since Christine Gregoire got re-elected. No wait, the Vampire Bomber is getting better! We are on a roll now! Washington is on the way back to being a nice place to live.

radishes-remember that statement when you are elderly and have a few posessions that are priceless to you because of the memories they represent. tresjbenet-may you someday lose something that means the world to you, and may you never get it back because somebody lives by the same sentiment you have posted here.

tresjbenet, you are never a dull bulb................but somewhere in life, as it would appear to me, your heart was broken and you have little to no compassion for the gut level empathy of other beings.

You cast judgements at others and make spurilous, unfounded and untrue comments and malicious conjecture.. But MY moral compass is off. Stay classy.

I agree on the robbing thing. Even with a safe, this woman needs a safe deposits box.

tresjbenet, I apologize for suggesting in a previous post, that you may have worked for Value Village, found the rings and pawned them. On the other hand your morale compass is way off.

What a wonderfully happy ending! I'm so glad that an honest worker found the sheos with the mesh bag and that the store was able to return the rings to Ms. Bergstrom! I bet that she is one happy camper!

In other words, an old lady continues to fervently hoard her possessions. Who cares? Why is this news?

This is a great story, but I wouldn't blame anyone for keeping the ring. Finder keepers is old English law

I sure hope she's unlisted. Now that she's got them back and people have her name, they might try to rob her.
