PUYALLUP, Wash. - There's a growing memorial to the slain Powell boys at the elementary school they attended in Puyallup.

Dozens of people gathered at Carson Elementary to place candles, stuffed animals, balloons and messages out front. Seven-year-old Charlie was a student at the school.

Todd Hayden is a recess supervisor at the school. He says a fallen branch became one of Charlie's favorite toys this week.

So Todd came back to look for the branch.

"Sure enough it was right on top of the stack and everything, just sitting there, and it was just pretty scary and special and eerie in a quiet playground,” he said.

The boys died Sunday afternoon in a fast-moving fire at their father's home. Authorities say it's apparent that Josh Powell set the fire deliberately. Powell was a person of interest in his wife's disappearance two years ago from the home they shared in West Valley City, Utah.

Josh Powell was recently denied custody of the boys, who had been living with Susan's parents for several months, ever since Josh Powell's father was arrested in a voyeurism case.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Remmy...that's a great idea. I agree that Cox' attorney would be a good place to start. Maybe the beginning of a movement towards protecting the children of domestic violence. Something like the Crystal Brame center, but for kids.

Remmy? I'm sure their attorney would be a very helpful contact. Contacting his office would be a place to start.

My condolences to the family of these boys and their mother. Sadly, the system failed them. We need to focus our anger...on making sure that this kind of travesty never happens again. And yes, it is unimaginable that we should have to protect children from their own father. I too, would like to contribute to a fund "in their names"...Something that would help put "safeguards" in place to better protect children in similiar situations. I choose to believe that these boys are now in the arms of their mother...

Furious, deeply saddened, and I'm sure my reactions will continue. I would suggest supporting any of the non-profit neutral locations where supervised visitations can happen. Beyond that - I'm still stunned.

@Remmy, great idea! I am still angry and I did not know any of them but the tragic death of the boys today just makes me so mad.

Would love to send something in memory for those handsome boys. Maybe we should start a fund for the family. Anyone interested? Maybe we can make it to stop violence on children from the ones who are suppose to protect them. Just a suggestion. This is very heart breaking and couldn't ever imagine me having to go threw something this horrible. I really would like to help those grandparents anyone in and have any suggestions?
