SEATTLE -- Native American community leaders are angry about the killing of John Williams earlier this week and they want the Mayor, Police Chief and anybody else who will listen to know it.

John T. Williams was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer on Monday after being ordered to drop a knife with a 3-inch blade and a piece of wood.

Many members of Seattle's Native American community say the death of the woodcarver was not the first time they've been targeted by police.

Williams was a First Nations totem carver who was reportedly deaf in one ear. He was also an alcoholic who was known to be volatile when he was drinking.

The Native American community is now looking for answers from Seattle Police.

At a press conference Friday morning, a group of tribal leaders and representatives of civil rights groups called for a "transparent" investigation, a meeting with the mayor, and a seat at the table if an inquest happens."

A letter to Mayor Mike McGinn, released by the Chief Seattle Club, says bluntly, "We are holding the Seattle Police Department and the City of Seattle accountable for his death."

A spokesperson for the mayor says the mayor is committed to having a face-to-face meeting with Native leaders to address their concerns and hopes to have it as soon as possible.

"We are holding the Seattle Police Department and the City of Seattle accountable for his death. We will closely watch your investigation," said Jenine Grey, Executive Director for Chief Seattle Club.

The club laid out specific requests: They want an apology from the police department, better training of cultural awareness, and an inquest that involves at least one person from the Native community.

"When is all this shooting going to stop?" said Cecil Hansen, Duwamish Tribe.

Emotions ran high, Williams' brother, Rick, was among those asking for answers. Other civil rights groups are also asking for change.

"(They) would rather hide what occurs than actually tell the truth, reconcile with the people and start to change," said James Bible, NAACP.

William's wood-carvings have been shown at a Vancouver B.C. gallery. The manager says the family is in shock - a family for whom carving is a way of life.

"There are seven of the siblings who make their living carving and there's no question John had talent to burn," he said.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Police Guild is standing by the officer.

"We have the officer on audio ordering the subject to drop the knife three times. That's clear. And the witnesses have confirmed that," said Rich O'Neill, president of Seattle Police Guild.

Williams' supports say that they won't let his death get swept under the rug.

The Chief Seattle Club has sent letters to Police Chief Diaz and the Mayor's office. Mayor McGinn says he will meet with them soon.

A brief protest flared on Capitol Hill in Seattle Friday afternoon. About 20 mostly black-clad demonstrators marched in front of SPD's East Precinct, calling police murderers and judges executioners.

One woman named Brenda Michael told KING 5 she was there because "the police choose to pray on people like John T. (Williams) and the minorities and people who don't have voices."

That protest was peaceful, watched by a large police contingent, and dispersed after less than an hour.

Ya, I am sure that the guy was just doing his carving minding his own business and then just got shot because the police officer was bored. Give me a break and everyother sane person. We all know that this is not what happened.

This was a totally unnecessary death; I hope the officer responsible is fully prosecuted. This was negligent homicide at best and most probably murder ("Oh, gee, a guy with a small knife who's not threatening anyone; I think I'll shoot to kill"). I am a 105-lb. female; unless someone was charging me with a knife and less than one foot away, I wouldn't feel threatened. If I were an armed officer I would know enough to warn more than once, tase, or to shoot in the foot. And, if the person was wearing a three-piece suit and carrying a briefcase, I somehow doubt the result would be the same. I hope that the large number of totally unjustified officer shootings recently lead to a rash of lawsuits which will stop this "Wild West" mentality on the part of police officers. Did anyone see "Frontline" yesterday, re the African-American youth in Texas who was shot three times by an officer in his own front yard, after having assured the officer that the car he was driving was indeed his own?

Like racism and sexism, this consider this a form of AUDISM. A new word, add it to your vocabulary. Audism- D/deaf and/or hearing individual express and/or act, in any forms, prejudgice against Deaf individual and/or Deaf culture; I am deaf in one ear and uses American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. To communication with an hearing individual I must have an ASL Interpreter to communicate; Deaf world and Hearing world are completely different norm. What work in Hearing world does not always work in the Deaf world. Hearing people often forget this and some just utterly stupid. I cannot stress this enough. Deaf people follow visual clues, listen with their eyes not their ears; Today, several people had stop to talk to me while I was jogging. The driver was 5 feet away and I could not hear a word coming out of their mouth. The sound of an open environment overpower and reduce an hard of hearing person to tone deaf; Overall, Seattle Police Dept need training on Deaf Culture.

You want cold hard realities, OK When your told by a police officer to do something like drop a knife, gun whatever, you do it. Most of will never see or experience the things that these officer see almost every day. When one takes in alcohol, drugs or has mental problems he becames a threat to everyone. If these so called minorities groups what to point a finger at someone about the problems on the streets, they need to point it with-in. You need to form groups to stop the use of drugs and alcohol in your neighborhoods. Ya right like that will ever happen.

OK folks here is some cold, hard realities... you join the police force, at sometime in your career, you are going to be shot at, someone will come at you with a knife, throw a punch or that domestic violence call will go bad because the caller has a change of heart and doesn't want the person to be arrested after all. So this thing with the guy and the knife. I am not saying that my alarms would not go off. I would be paying extra attention to him and do what I could to get their attention. I am so sick of hearing about a gun or a tazer being used so early in the confrontation. I will give credit to the history that this man had a drinking issue. My brother does too! But that does not make him a danger to others in general public, he just embarrasses everyone, especially himself. More restraint should be shown with these cops. They are too trigger happy. Accountability needs to be enforced. Just saying your scared when you are a cop does not set a good cause to kill someone else!

When a person has a knife you are trained to PULL your firearm PERIOD. Using it is the next level if needed. What if you miss with the taser? Then the person gets to you and stabs you. Too late for the officer. Now I have heard that the gentleman may have been hard of hearing. Did he possibly not hear the officer tell him to drop the knife? My question then is was he blind as well? If an officer was pointing his weapon at me while I have a knife in my hand but I can’t hear. My commonsense tells me to drop the knife I have in my hand. Not hold onto it. Think about this for a bit. Police are asked to make split second decisions that are life and death. Not even the President does that. The President does have power over life and death but I bet he at least sleeps over the thought. Police don’t have that luxury out on the street. Right or wrong, however their decision goes down, that’s how it is.

What did Mr. Williams do that made the policeman request he get up from his position on that wall? Was there a warrant out for this man? I don't get it. Why didn't the policeman just leave him alone where he was sitting. He was not hurting anyone. Now he is dead. I don't care if he drank, a lot of people do. He was a valued carver to his people. He did not deserve to die because of the 3 inch knife. His death is a senseless death. I find this very sad. I have respect for the police force, but when something like this happens that is wrong, someone should be held accountable.

yes pete33 it is so easy for the NAACP to blame everyone else for "THEIR" own actions instead of blaming themselves. If this had been a WHITE drunk brandishing a knife in downtown duing rush hour and shot by SPD we wouldn't even be having this discussion. The NAACP are nothing but bigots and slowly losing all credibility in this town as far as I can see. Their "LEADER" is nothing but a corrupt money grubbing pig!!!!! He is not out there on the streets fighting for "HIS" people, but instead hides behind a camera trying his best to look pretty. if i understand the details, the cop killed the man simply because he refused to drop the knife. he did not move toward the cop or threaten him in any way. would a reasonable person be threatened by a person holding a knife in a non-aggressive manner? further, would a professional enforcement officer holding a gun be threatened by a person holding a knife? the force the cop used was more than the situation required. he is guilty of murder.

The law applies equally to everyone. If you have a knife of ANY KIND in your hand and you do NOT drop it. Then you are a threat. If you resist when you are wrestled to the ground then you are a threat. The police have authority and they are issued guns to use. Follow the police commands or you may be shot. The police don't know what is going through your mind, my mind or anyone else's they have to make a decision before someone gets hurt. Otherwise we will be prosecuting the police for not reacting soon enough and a bystander or other police officer gets hurt. Keep it up - I support our police force!!!!!!!

Couldn't the policeman have left Mr. Williams alone? I am disgusted with the abundance of death by cop lately. I do understand that quite a few cops have been killed this last year also. Does this give them the right to have this new hair trigger response?

Put up with the sh*t they put up with everyday then get on here and say all the hateful things you want about law enforcement. I guess I just obey the law on a daily basis, so I don't have a problem with law enforcement. I have a great deal of respect for them. I still say, "If you have nothing to be guilty about"........... The recent, unwanted killiings are not happening in just the great city of Seattle, but all over the country. Don't blame Law Enforcement, blame the guilty. We have one of the finest and diverse Police Departments in the country and we should be proud that we are being protected from criminals, crazies and phsycos that are out roaming our honest tax payer (most of us) dollar streets. So what rockford is saying is that Law Enforcement have no right to protect themselves or the public if they feel there is an imminent threat? So was Law Enforcement wrong in shooting and killing the guy that took hostages at The Discovery Channel???? I still say you can't have it both ways. If you want to take these criminals into your home and clothe, feed and keep them out of our way, good luck to you and hope that when they turn on you Law Enforcement WILL still come to your aid.

If you do a little research the police have been killing suspect at an alarming rate, not just natives but anybody who seems to present any imminent threat regardless of background, I believe there’s a new policy that’s imbedded in police training and an attitude that it is better to kill then to not and be killed, but that policy comes from the training of the police themselves self-defense starts with being proactive, not waiting or examining the background of the person or not acting to save potential victims hostages or anyone would end your career, so to insure my job and protect them (public)” I just jump the gun a little and the situations solved”, police have police to back them up, the investigations are done by the police, so you and yours is always covered by the hierarchy, they have no fear of exercising their powers, now how many people could have gotten hurt if those cops had missed had the bullet bounced off a wall and hit someone, the danger they create is equal

Any death of any person in this manner is awful no matter the race (shame on you rfisherman for playing the racism card). Let's not forget 9-11 and knowing how Law Enforcement are not just protectors of the communities in which they serve, but are also close to one another and consider their fellow Officers family members. Let's also not forget Christopher Monfort who wounded one officer and killed another while they were sitting in their patrol car. Oh and let's not forget Maurice Clemmons who shot and killed 4 police officers while they were having coffee before going on duty. We have no one to thank but the terrorists and the sick of mind for the heightened cautiousness of our Public Servents. And for "Jennifer" who was interviewed on King5 tonight, aren't you really Jeff?????? And why the mask. Oh wait I know, because you're hiding your guilty face from Law Enforcement because you're wanted as a Male Prostitute.

The pigs promise to "protect" the people, but what we see is armed highway robbery, assault, beatings, and killings. If they can't do their promised job, to PROTECT the people, then they ought to turn in their badges and get the F out of OUR town.

Years ago Cops who were 6ft. 5in. and taller 225 lbs plus who walked softly carrying a big stick literally would walk a beat get to know the people on their beat. Stayed in touch with the locals of the area including lawbreakers. A good line of communication with the locals and a understanding that the cops are there to help and at the same time expect the public at large to obey the law or deal with the consequences. Just the presence of those big guys had a element of authority, and at the same time they connected with the public on a human level..

There is plenty of finger pointing going on, but ultimately Mr. Williams was the captain of his own ship. He was the one with the alcohol problem, he was the one carrying the knife, and he was the one not complying with the officers command. If the officer is at all at fault we simply don't enough information to say so. As for all those who so quickly lump all police officers into into a single category of brainless, stupid, out of control, or whatever, you are just plain ignorant. There are about 1200 Seattle police officers serving roughly 600,000 citizens plus visitors and tourists and commuters. The NIMH has estimated that as much as 26% of the US population describe symptoms that could be diagnosed as some sort of mental illness. So what percent of the population of Seattle have the potential to give an officer a bad time...? The fact that there are relatively so few officer shootings is really rather amazing.

Don't expect a apology from the police or the punk cop who killed him. Above all else they are cowards, despite them telling you for years and years that they have the hardest job in America and every time they go out on the streets "they put their lives on the line" blah, blah, blah. Cops have become more reckless than most thugs. The press will not tell you that since the first of the year, more people have been killed by cops in this state, than any other state in the country. More than Texas, CA, Florida or New York. Think about it. It is called revenge. How easily they forget, that people will want revenge too.

Last Friday night in Spokane a 74 yr old, preacher, businessman, was "mistakenly" shot and killed by a police officer on his own property, Mr. Williams was shot and killed by a Seattle police officer for no apparent reason other than he was whittling in downtown Seattle, Wednesday a Federal Way police officer shot and killed a young man, claiming a pickup truck that wasn't moving, was a threat to the officer. No matter what age, race, or time of day, it seems innocent people have become the targets of a STATEWIDE lack of good administrative policy, peace-time training, and public accountability. It is to the point to notice that in each instance the police cite UNION policy, and UNION representatives INFORM the public that the police appropriately performed their jobs. NO!. Union policy is not LAW. The public employee unions hide, protect, and in many cases, prohibit from firing public employees that are a danger to our society. No MORE PUBLIC EMPLOYEE UNIONS.

Why is alcohol, drug use, and gang violence so prolific in tribes despite huge casino profits? Why do they dish out that money to alcoholics instead of creating a positive influence on tribal communities. Instead we get to see the trash they spread all over "Trust Land". If you want respect from the police community, you must be willing to give them respect. Quit bringing race into every argument. I've lived 44 years without ever having to use my race as an excuse. I believe the Seattle Police Department needs to rethink their hiring process. This is not the wild, wild west and we simply cannot continue to condone shootings of our citizens. There is something missing psychologically in these officers. There was another shooting yetsterday where the officer said a white truck came at him after it crashed during a chase. The video proves that the truck did not move and the office shot him anyway. On top of that, it is okay to beat the heck out of a latino man, use racial slurs even though theat man in custody was NOT the perpetrator? that was ruled reasonable force by the guild. There is something definintely wrong here... This trend needs to be studied closely to make the carnage STOP. This should be a major priority NOW. (FWIW: I am white).
