SEATTLE -- "Barefoot Bandit" Colton Harris-Moore ridiculed police and prosecutors in emails and phone calls from prison recently, undercutting his claims that he's sorry for his two-year crime spree, the U.S. attorney's office said in court documents filed Tuesday.

The 20-year-old, who awaits federal sentencing, referred to Island County Sheriff Mark Brown as the "king swine," called prosecutors who handled his case "fools," and referred to news reporters as "vermin." The self-taught pilot bragged about his two-year crime spree, during which he hopscotched the U.S. in stolen cars, boats and small planes before being captured in the Bahamas in July 2010 a hail of bullets.

"The things I have done as far as flying and airplanes goes, is amazing," he wrote in one email last August. "Nobody on this planet have done what I have, except for the Wright brothers."

Federal prosecutors included excerpts from the emails and phone transcripts in a sentencing memorandum filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court. Harris-Moore was sentenced last month to more than seven years in prison for a long string of state crimes, mostly on his hometown of Camano Island and in the San Juan Islands, but he is still scheduled to be sentenced on Friday for federal crimes, including stealing planes.

Prosecutors are seeking a six-and-a-half year sentence, the most they can ask for under the terms of Harris-Moore's federal plea deal. His lawyers asked for a sentence of just under six years in their own memorandum filed Tuesday. The plea deal calls for proceeds from a movie deal to be used to pay more than $1.2 million in restitution to his victims, and the judge can issue a sentence outside the plea deal's suggested range.

Emma Scanlan, one of Harris-Moore's lawyers, said the excerpts were cherry-picked from more than 700 pages of emails and phone transcripts. None of the excerpts suggests that Harris-Moore doesn't feel sorry for the people he victimized, she noted.

"Maybe he doesn't the like the sheriff's office, maybe he doesn't like the prosecutors," Scanlan said. "But he's recognizing the most important group of people."

Prosecutors said the excerpts offered a striking difference in tone to the apology letter Harris-Moore wrote to the state and federal judges handling his case. In the letter, he said he did not want to glamorize anything he had done, and he apologized profusely to his victims, saying he learned only too late of the fear he was instilling in them. He said his childhood -- with an abusive, alcoholic mother and a series of her ex-con boyfriends -- was one he would not wish on his "darkest enemies."

He also wrote in the letter that he wanted to apologize to the Island County and San Juan County sheriffs' offices, "who I know were only doing their jobs." In a monitored telephone call Dec. 9, a week before his sentencing, he said he wanted his supporters in the courtroom because "the more people I have from my camp the better, because that's just one less seat that will be filled by the media vermin or the swine, the king swine himself, Mark Brown."

The judge who sentenced Harris-Moore in state court emphasized his difficult childhood, called his case "a triumph of the human spirit" and suggested it's remarkable that he didn't commit worse crimes, given his background.

In an email a few days after the sentence, Harris-Moore recounted the sentencing.

"When all the acting and spreading of high propaganda on the part of the state was over and my lawyers argued the true facts, the judge gave me a much-appreciated recognition and validation, calling my story a `triumph of the human spirit,"' he wrote. "She wasn't having none of the weak argument the prosecution tried to peddle, and ended up handing down a sentence that was the lowest possible within the range. ... Once again, I made it through a situation I shouldn't have."

@forstep So, if anybody anywhere takes a headline out of context, it means that the media entity that posted the headline is "vermin"?! Care to explain your reasoning there? Because it looks to me like a logical fallacy. The headline is 100% accurate. You're basically saying that they should have worded the headline so that it wouldn't attract any attention. Why, exactly? Frankly, I think that would be a terrible idea. The story here isn't that prosecutors released some documents. The story is what was contained IN those documents. Therefore, the headline should and does reflect that.

I have a stronger opinion about police beating a man almost to death and getting away scott free as usual than i do about a teen stealing. Read the comments. Just bullies who will always defend the lawlessness of our corrupt police department which is effecting your property taxes, utility bills, and cuts to your local school budgets while lambasting a teenage thief. Its all very strange. Your own children's education are being effected. Life in prison? Hang him? Rot to death? Proof many have their priorities completely screwed up.

This kid is intelligent and smart, he's devious, and he posesses a high degree of ingenuity! But this is a characteristic of the sociopath! He had a loathsome childhood and his mother is, if reports are accurate, one for the ages. But one doesn't necessarily begat the other. On the one hand, he expresses remorse to the people he "offended" but on the other hand, he is clearly laughing at the "system". Read his "I made it through a situation I shouldn't have". He is laughing at us people and that shows his lack of concience and remorse, Again........the mark of a sociopath. This kid is dangerous and we'd better be darned careful how he is handled....the worst could be yet to come. And to you "stringman58", I'd suggest you wait a while before youy express such lenience!

I'm betting his plea deals had gag orders instilled not just to one side. I hope the prosecuters take a lengthy look at what he said, and see if he viloated any of his deals. This fool is not a swashbucleing people under dog anti-hero. He is a petty theif, thug and lowlife. Throw the book at him aready so he can be made an example of. All the judge did was set a precident that can be exploited by every Public Defender from now to kingdom come.

He's not clever, he's not cute, he's not a misunderstood and unfortunate kid - he is a SOCIOPATH and if/when he's released, he'll do it, or worse, all over again. There is no "cure" for a sociopath; in the way most of us understand the term, they're not even human - they know that, and believe it makes the superior to the rest of us.

That's exactly the extreme punishment attitude that probably spawned his troubles to begin with. I'm not condoning the things he did, don't get me wrong. What he did was wrong. However he is young not yet hardened and totally redeemable. However the human spirit usually pushes back against the hand that abuses it. I say let him make restitution by serving his country rather than seeking retribution which will really satisfy nobody and benefit nobody. Lets not create another hardened hateful human being by compounding what was a bad situation long before he committed his first crime. It would be a shame to waste such potential for the sake of retribution condoned mostly by people, from what I am reading, who were never a victim of his actions.

Personally I think this guy is young and typically arrogant as are many young men his age. If I were the government, I would hire this guy as a consultant , train him and put his craftiness and guile to work. I mean come on when he started he was 15. How many 15 yr olds can elude state wide man hunts learn to fly a plane by stealing one and generally make fools out of half the law enforcement in the country for almost 5 years ? They need to put him to work. I can think of several government agencies that could use a boost to their talent pools. But no we will of course judge him guilty and arrogant, with police officers who would really like him dead for making them look bad and a prosecutor just looking for another notch in his guilty belt on his way to attorney general .

I don't know. He can be remorseful about what he has done, and still ridicule police, prosecutors and the press. The two things aren't necessarily linked in any way. After all, one can be remorseful for having done something, yet still be ticked off about how people may be treating you as a result of what you are feeling remorse about. But, whatever.

Somehow a thief was made into an international celebrity. One side says he is a criminal, and another says he is a Catch Me If You Can hero. Just imagine anyone, homeless and living in the woods, catapulting himself into the stuff that makes for books and movies--all by age twenty. He has what it takes to be a real politician. And you know what, I think he would get elected! (If he can learn to be a little less honest.)

I take serious issue with the title given to Harris-Moore by the author of this piece "self taught pilot". This clown is not a pilot. Pilot's are professionally trained. They attend ground school courses and take written examinations given by the FAA that they have to pass. The student pilot MUST demonstrate the acquired flying skill to safely take off and safely LAND an airplane without Instructor Pilot assistance before they are allowed to fly by themselves. To complete their professional flight training and receive a Private Pilot's License, the FAA mandates that the pilot applicant pass a practical flight examination. This idiot Harris-Moore demonstrated that the only flying "skill" he had was to steal an airplane, get it airborne and then crash it safely enough to walk away from the wrecked airplane...that is not a pilot. That is a thief and a moron. He is very lucky that he did not kill himself or people on the ground or collide with an airliner full of people

Amazing, Mr. Harris-Moore's situation has NOTHING to do with "emotions", be it from a pro or con side...and was exploited by fostrep. Funny...the populists aren't engaging in my below posted argument, they are sill trying to justify their "selfish gain at cost of others" point. It's just that...a point. No argument. No substanial comment in logic, reason and/or humanity. They cannot accept an absolute fact, or the absolute facts. They will try to justify, in their minds, that in our collective civil existence...that their behaviour without consequence is justified.

They will age or economic status, to continue their abuse of fellow human beings. Conseula...choices have consequences...get use to it. Be it humanistic or in nature. Choices. We, as humans, make choices. We are responsible for them, and we become what choices we've made. Mr. Harris-Moore, made choices. He chose to steal. He chose to break into property, be it personal or public, violating trust of his fellow human beings. He took, without permission, the property and individual security (until you have your things stolen or house broken into, it violates an extreme measure of feeling secure) of his fellow human beings. Was it for the benifit for society? If your moral argument is such, please list the benifits of others in Mr. Harris-Moore's actions. Mr. Harris-Moore is intelligent, he used his intelligence for self gain at the cost of others. Those who support him, also share the view of "selfish gain at cost of others". He had no political motives. No social motives. No judicial motives. Just, selfish motives. Just like those who lay thier alms of hero worship, upon his altar. He isn't a hero, he's a common thief. Silly populists.

I think that he is far from being repentant or remorseful for any harm he has done his victims and I think his placement of blame on everyone but himself is disgusting. Man Up, Boy! One cannot always find a scapegoat and expect forgiveness. That may have worked with his grandparents or his liberal progressive school teachers, but it won't work in the real world.
