SEATTLE -- It was an emotional scene in court Friday afternoon as a judge set a million dollars bail for the man accused of killing two teenagers in a DUI crash on I-5 in Tukwila Wednesday. And police say they found a half bottle of vodka in the car that rammed into the teenagers.

A judge ordered Alexander Peder, 50, held on one million dollars bail when Peder made his first court appearance Friday afternoon. Peder was charged with two counts of Vehicular Homicide and one count of Vehicular Assault.

Troopers say Wednesday night Peder plowed his Ford Explorer into the back of 19-year-old Anthony Beaver's Honda when it stalled along I-5 in Tukwila, killing back passenger Derek King, 18, and inflicting fatal wounds on Nicholas Hodgins, 18. Driver Anthony Beaver survived but was injured.

On Friday, about two dozen of the victims' high school friends and relatives packed the courtroom at the King County Jail. Lance Beaver, the father of the single survivor of the crash, was also there and came face to face with the suspected drunk drive that plowed into his son's car. Lance's emotions were raw - he wanted Peder to see a picture of his smiling son and his best friends.

"I wanted him to see the faces of the two boys he murdered and he wouldn't look at us," said Lance.

According to court records, Peder was charged twice before for DUI. On both occasions, he plead to a lesser charge.

Lance Beaver says the night of the accident, Peder showed no remorse.

"He was trying to blame Anthony. He was telling Anthony he hit him and tried to blend in with the crowd," said Lance.

Outside of court, friends of the graduating high scholers hugged and held back tears. Saturday was graduation day for the boys. Injured Anthony Beaver will walk wearing his best friend's gown.

"He tore apart a community," said Lance Beaver. "He ruined hundreds of kids' graduation day. He tore families apart."

Troopers say the night of the accident, Peder had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred his speech and smelled of alcohol. Inside Peder's car investigators found a half bottle of vodka with a receipt showing the liquor was bought just six hours prior to the crash.

Troopers also took a blood draw to check his alcohol level. They are still awaiting test results from the state lab.

Prosecutors say Peder could face a maximum of three years behind bars for each count of Vehicular Homicide.

Peder's attorney declined to comment on the case.

The court appearance is just one day before Derek King and Nick Hodgins were supposed to receive their diplomas from Decatur High School in Federal Way.

The graduation ceremony is set for 4 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome. School spokesperson Diane Turner says there will be a "moment of silence" for the two graduates. The Federal way School District Superintendent says he will read King's and Hodgins' names at the time they were supposed to take the stage. Turner says the superintendent wants to leave students with hope.

acehighsteve "#4. The drunk driver also bears some responsibility for not trying to evade the accident" Dude, whatever drugs you're smoke, you need to stop, evidently it's affecting your ability to think, that or you're just a complete idiot. The last time I check it was a crime to drive drunk. The driver does not BEAR some responsibility, he bears all of it, due his total disregard for the law and other peoples safety, two kids were robbed out of their lives. You mentioned it's against the law for teenagers to be out after 11, well in that case if the cops had arrested them they would be alive right? And maybe the scumbag would have killed someone else down the road, like a car with a family full of kids in the car ( Or is that illegal too?) If those were your kids would you be making the same stupid comments you made here?

@acehighsteve- what gives you the right to judge this kid for his actions!!! he is 18 years old. yes we do have a law stating that there is a curfew but once a teen turns 18 that law no longer applies!!!! think about that you insensitive jerk!!! and if the car stalls then how in the world is he to move it off the road!!! he turned his flashers on so that people would see him!!!! HOW DARE YOU PUT THE BLAME ON THE KID WHEN HE JUST LOST TWO OF HIS BEST FRIENDS!!!! HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF ONE OF THOSE TWO KIDS WAS YOUR CHILD???? WOULD YOU BE SAYING THIS?!?!? I THINK NOT!!!!!!!!!! SO STOP BLAMING OTHERS WHEN IT IS THE DRIVERS FAULT OF THE SUV WHOE WAS DRUNK!!!

Voiceofseason finally agrees with my main argument, I am quite aware this was a horrible tragedy and two very young kids were killed, however, I will repeat, #1, a teenager should not be in a car at 11pm at night with two other teenagers...PERIOD!, in fact we do have a law about that I believe! #2, the kid driving that was hit was totally inexperienced, and the car obviously was NOT in good working order. #3, The kid did not do what MOST experienced drivers would do and get a faulty vehicle off the road, after the car ran out of gas or had engine problems, instead he came to a STOP on a FREEWAY at Night! , and just looking at that fact alone he bears some responsibility of the accident. (Would a pedestrian crossing a freeway and being hit by a vehicle be the drivers fault? Interesting to think about eh?) #4. The drunk driver also bears some responsibility for not trying to evade the accident. But I believe that car would of been hit anyway, and luckily it was a SUV and NOT a SEMI!

@genagee We are not accident investigators, but here are a couple of scenarios to consider, in the event you are ever charged with instructing a new driver: You can be following a vehicle at a safe distance, 2 sec or whatever, and if that car were to swerve and reveal a stationary object, in this case a disabled vehicle, there would not be enough time to stop. Period. In this case Mr. Peder failed to even swerve judging by the photos of his vehicle. If traffic were stacking up at the time the vehicle became disabled then there may not have been enough momentum to get the car off the road at the time Mr. Peder slammed into the rear of the vehicle. Teach children to always refer to rear view mirror prior to applying hard brakes especially on the freeway. Always have an escape plan and always think the car behind you is driven by an idiot or drunk and think for them by creating extra space in front of you.

This unimaginable tragedy--that has become the reality for all those concerned can serve as a wakeup call for those who might otherwise get that harrowing knock on the door in the middle of the night--or the call from jail for the lucky ones. Teach your children that if your engine stops, gets a flat, whatever, to get it off the road--even if it means on it's rims or in a ditch. If you get DUI's and you don't have a drinking problem, then you do have a DRIVING problem and sell your car and give the license to the judge-- because if nothing changes then nothing changes. History will repeat itself. After 10:00 at night more than 50% of drivers have had something to drink--most legally. If you don't like the math then consider your options. I don't think Mr. Peder's actions in this case rise to the level of trade your life culpability. The laws related to dui and the judges failed to communicate the implications of what would come

Acehighsteve, first.. your a jerk. Secondly, your argument about a "smart" person not letting their car come to a complete stop on the freeway is ridiculous. You don't know what happened to that car to make it stop, for all you know it could have stalled and surprised the kid and he hit the brakes.BUT... he DID put his flashers on.. and unless his brakelights were not working he would have shown brakelights and with that being said the driver who was behind him should have kept enough distance between himself and the car to either be able to change lanes or slow down.. but WHY was he not able to do that ? Hmmmm... BECAUSE HE WAS DRUNK!! See.. unless something has drastically changed I learned that you should keep a minimum distance of 1 car length per 10 mph driving speed between the person in front of you and yourself. No matter how you slice it THIS KID IS NOT AT FAULT but the scumbag who got drunk and drove is. Your argument is stupid and I have a feeling you are too.

@acehighsteve Ace, I'm usually the type to chime in on a topic such as this by looking at the situation backwards (opposite of the reporting). However, you, take the cake. Its a horrible time for the families involved. Even I must bite my tounge on this topic. It was a tragedy that two young men lost thier lives in an accident that never should have happened. Yes, its true that even if the other driver was sober it could still have been a potentially fatal situation. Needless to say, if your car stalls, let alone starts to fail, what is your natural reaction? To press on the brake, thank you. The driver may have had the issue previously and got the car running again. However this time, it may not have started. My old Honda did the same thing, it would stall at random times, once it stopped, it refused to start for approx 35-60 seconds, then it would start. I would never have considered driving it on city streets again. Needless to say I bought a Jeep and demo'd the honda in a derby.

All I'm saying is, unless the wheels literally came off of that car, and there was no way to move it, then for one he shouldn't been driving it, and if the wheels didn't fall off, then he coasted to a stop, and instead of coasting to a stop in the middle of the Freeway he should of done everything he could to get the car to the side of the road, which it would appear he did not do, therefore, he has to except some of the responsibility for the accident, because a car stopping in the center of the freeway at night WILL be hit ...NO Doubt about it! Whether it gets hit by a drunk driver or a SOBER driver...IT WILL BE HIT! He was lucky it wasn't hit by a SEMI...which would of killed all three!

He looks like a pedofile and if the other prisoners think he is, they'll beat the heck out of him......._________I just pray that in a few weeks we hear another story about how this guy was killed in prison, or better yet, contracted aids and gives it to his family. ________An eye for an eye...... Why is it that if you ALMOST kill a cop you get life or execution no problem....but if you kill Nick and Derek you get a petty couple years???________ They want to increase penalties for TEXTING, but you can drink and kill TWO KIDS and you get a vacation for a few years???? I hope he can't sleep at night. The laws NEED to change. Please vote and pressure your politicians for JUSTICE serving drunk driving laws. And one more thing, no one expects their car to break down. You can't blame the kid because his car broke down at an unfortunate timing. Plus did you hear what the officers were saying? He didn't even try and brake to lesson the impact of the vehicle on Anthony's.

Why would any SMART person let their car come to a complete halt in the middle of a FREEWAY?? Not to mention at NIGHT!!! The outcome was going to be BAD as soon as the driver of that car let his car come to a stop in the CENTER of the FREEWAY!!! This is a tradgedy, but I'm sorry the Kid needs to accept some of the responsibility, he is the one that Ultimately caused the accident by letting his car come to a stop in the center of the FREEWAY...Luckily for him...he lived...if a Semi would of hit them instead of a SUV all three would be dead!

Since we can't find the collective will to do what needs to be done and remove driving priveledges for life for repeat drunk drivers( repeat meaning on the second offense) we should force them to buy the smallest vehicle, something like a smart car, so at least they will be the ones suffering for their actions. This also will remove a lot of suv's from the highways, since they seem to be the vehicle of choice for drunk drivers. Notice this one was driving an Explorer. Then they can go about removing themselves from the gene pool. We cry and weep, rightfully so, over 6000 killed in Iraq. 45000 are killed on the roadways every year. This man is a murderer.

I heard Anthony's car died in the middle lane of I-5??? How can that driver let that happen?? I'm sorry but if it is the case, then the driver too, needs to bear some of the responsibility! You people can't understand how difficult it is to see a car STOPPED in the center of a freeway when you’re doing 60-65mph. It is almost impossible! Now granted if the other driver wasn't DRUNK he could have reacted faster...but, he probably STILL would have hit them. You NEVER let your car die in the CENTER lane of a FREEWAY!! NEVER, NEVER!! You get it to the side before it STOPS! PERIOD!!! If a car runs out of gas or the engine let's go, you still have time to get it to the SHOULDER!!! It sounds like Horrible driving on BOTH parts; you cannot blame just the drunk driver in this case! It is a tragedy, but Christ, this car died in the center of I5 at NIGHT...,

For the bleeding heart liberals, let your son be killed like this and THEN see how you feel. Also, these deaths are measure 11 offenses with each offence carrying 72 months. the DUI`s and twelve months for each offence which is times 3. SO... do the math. A little over 14 years IF people see to it that the Judge orders a CONSECUTIVE sentancing and NOT a CONCURRENT sentancing. With a consecutive sentance, we can hope he dies in prison.

The blood sample needs to be sent to the state lab to rule out other causes of high alcohol in the body. Diabetes can cause high alcohol in the body from sugar breakdown. The breathalyzer cannot distinguish this while a blood sample can. It is so the defense cannot claim the breathalyzer alcohol level was health related and that it was not due to drinking alcohol.

janesays, People drink and drive because they can get away with it, with little repurcussion, time and time again. This guy plead down, then reoffended and was allowed to plead down again. Now he's killed two people, and the max is 6 years in jail. Sure his license will be revoked when he gets out, but that's not going to stop him from driving. The initial DUI should be punishable by significant jail time, period. I know plenty of people who have gotten DUI's themselves, who agree.

I would like to add that I was rear ended by a drunk woman in 1992. My truck was stopped at a stop light. The police estimated her speed at 45 mph. She did not appear in court and was not cited either. I never found out the reason behind this as the court records were sealed. The irony of this is the fact that two days after hitting me she rear ended another car at the same intersection. How did I find this out you may ask? The highway patrol had the guts to call me up and ask why I had failed to file an accident report. I wonder who she knew.

A three year sentence for each death seems a little light in this instance, considering that he has two prior DUI charges. The judge should have some leeway on that. HOWEVER - A million dollar bail is absurd! Bail must be affordable. PUNISH the CRIME after the conviction, but don't block equal justice by imposing an impossible bail! In this case we may feel that's not too harsh...but what if the case was not so cut and dried? What if it was you? It is nearly impossible to mount a reasonable defense behind bars...bail has to be reasonable. For all our sakes.

If your car breaks down on the freeway and quits running and you can not get it to the side of the road, hit the 4-way flashers, GET OUT of the car and OFF the freeway, and call 9-1-1 immediately. Sitting in the car you are a sitting duck.

THREE YEARS PER LIFE?!?!?!?!!!! If I had known this is all the punishment you can get for taking someone's life, I might have gotten drunk and gone driving more often! But seriously, there is something wrong with the justice system if all you get is three years each, with good behavior you'd serve a total of three and a half years for taking away these two fine young gentlemens' lives.

Our government abrogated The Constitution several decades ago. The LAW says, "Excessive bail shall not be required." A million dollar bail for a teenager, no matter what the crime, is clearly excessive. The black robe should be hanged for malicious and criminal malfeasance of office.

ere is Peder's company mission statement: The X10 Culture X10 is an exciting, fast-paced environment. We welcome fresh thinking and creative ideas. This is not a 9 to 5 environment. We work and play hard. If you are interested in joining a dynamic, whirlwind of activity with limitless potential for growth apply today. Perhaps they should also include drinking hard. Oh, I see. If you should ever want to eliminate someone, don't shoot them (and risk more punishement), just get drunk and run 'em down. This whole thing is so pathetic.

First I would like to thank Freemonttroll for sharing my story. Then I want the families to know just how sorry I am this happend. Next I want the legislature to know just how disgusted I am that a three time looser could only get 6 years for two murders. Lastly I would like to say that. But for the grace of God there go I.

I truly hope Mr. Peder rots in hell. My youngest son (now 21) was involved in 2 drunk driver related accidents before he was 6 years old. Neither driver took responsibility for their own actions - including the one where my son's father was the drunk driver. The first accident was caused by a drunk driver turning into our lane and hitting us head on. We were lucky that we only received minor injuries. The lady that hit my son and I was in a rental car because she was involved in another drunk driving accident the previous week. She tried to flee the scene but the police were able to arrest her. The second accident was when his father had visitations for the weekend and he took the children to a kegger. Needless to say he lost visitations. In both accidents, the driver's blood alcohol level was at least 3 times the legal limit. People who are repeat offenders should have their license taken away FOREVER!! My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of these two boys.

It is horrible and very unfortunate. I wish I could share your optimism and hope this was just an accident. But... I myself got arrested for DUI and I know what it's like to be an alcoholic whose only motivation is to get drunk. And because I respect everyone in our community, I no longer drive even though I got my license back, I got rid of my car because I know that given the opportunity, I'd probably do it again. I don't want to quit drinking, so I quit driving. Hate me if you want. But since I know what this guy had to go through 2 times before I know this was no accident. If i was able to figure out the right thing to do for myself (and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed) then this tool is just that, a tool.

well they took blood from the driver who struck the car, so that will tell what his BAC was at that time. who knows if he drank half the bottle by himself, or what size the bottle was? was it a pint, fifth or half gallon? that would make a big difference, the news omitted that info. NEVER just stop in the middle of the freeway, especially at night. they should definitely have had enough momentum on I-5 to get to the shoulder, I dont understand why they just stopped? perhaps they were intoxicated too? I know no one wants to talk about that possibility, but stopping in the middle of the freeway just doesnt make sense.

You're right freemonttroll, I missed that. Still a horrible tragedy, and possibly accident. We we can't hang somebody before the jury's even out though was my only point. Wouldn't be the first time the cops spun something the way they wan't it to go. Why are they even releasing information related to the case?

liberterius - It was said from the beginning that their car stalled on I5 and they weren't able to move to the shoulder. Granted, in that scenario anyone could have hit them (a car in the middle of the highway at a dead stop in the dark). But given the statement by the police that the guy had a 1/2 full bottle of vodka that was purchased 6 hours prior, we'll never know if a sober person would have done the same. The odds are stacked against this guy. It's doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

sadly he wasnt able to get the car off the freeway. i think this may be a mitigating circumstance, if you are stopped in the middle of the freeway, buzzed or not it could be difficult to avoid that accident. No way am I condoning drinking and driving, and this guy has (2) priors, but I think his attorney is going to pounce on this fact. sad day all around, especially so close to graduating.

Horrible tragedy, I can't even imagine. However all in this country are innocent until proven guilty. Local media are spinning and grandstanding by showing the father of the one child that survived and his anger. Today we learn the teens car was stalled in the middle of I-5, hmmmm, didn't hear that yesterday did we? I don't think we can make a judgment, and shouldn't as thinking adults, on the culpability of the "drunk" driver until all the facts come out. My heart goes out to the lost teens, but if I've learned one thing in life it's that accidents actually do happen, and we don't hang people for that. Shame on the local news.

3 years... That's it? When you get a DUI or even lesser charge, you HAVE to go through the DUI victims panel, you know that drinking and driving kills. He had to go through this twice, knowing that drinking and driving kills, he did it anyway, and guess what, it killed.
