Google Maps had already been updated Friday morning to indicate Thursday’s collapse of the Interstate 5 bridge into the Skagit River in Mount Vernon.
The map shows I-5 missing over the entire river and as far south as Exit 227 and as far north as Exit 229. The actual collapse involved just one section of the bridge on the north side of the river.
The map had not been updated to indicate detour routes around the closed section of I-5.
But it appears that it wasn’t Google that made the changes to the map. According to KING 5 viewer Tim Bond, it was changed by someone using the Google Map Maker service.
According to Google's website, Map Maker “allows you to add and update geographic information for millions of users to see in Google Maps and Google Earth.” Google reviews the updates and, once approved, they will appear online.
A call to Google for comment had not been returned as of noon Friday.
